Description: This is a beautiful example of Christian van Adrichom's rare 1590 map of the lands granted to the Tribe of Asher at the time of Joshua's division of the Twelve Tribes. The map is oriented to the east and covers western Galilee from the city of Acre(called Ptolemais or Acon in ancient times) northward past the city of Tyre(Tyrus) toward Sidon and Mouth Hermon. A number of important biblical sites are identified pictorially including the site of the episode of Saint George and the Dragon where Saint George. The brave martyr, kills a dragon(signifying the devil) to rescue a princess(signifying God's Holy Truth) After the Kingdom of Israel was conquered by Assyria, the northern tribes including Dan, Ephraim, Manasseh, Asher and Zebulun were spared. The tribe of Asher would return to worship at the Temple of Jerusalem. This map is the first of ten maps of the Holy Land prepared by Christian van Adrichem for publication in his Theatrum Terrae Sanctae. Adrichem's maps for the Theatrum were prepared between 1580 and 1585, but were published posthumously by his associate, Gerardis Brunius of Koln, in 1590. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted Siberian Unakite semi-precious gemstone using jeweler’s epoxy.
