DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 3.86 carats(pearl) 0.12 carats(total weight of green sapphires) NOTES: Resizing is available. u DETAIL: In some Muslim legends. The pearl is God's first act of creation. In the ancient gemstone markets of Babylon, 5,000 years ago, pearls were prized possessions believed to restore youth. A fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. In Islamic Scripture, the Koran specifies that the rewards of paradise include pearls. God will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk. The spherical shape of some pearls also led many ancient cultures to associate this gem with the moon. To the Ancient Persians, pearls symbolized the moon and its magical powers, the moon instilling pearls with its celestial glow and mystery. Celebrating this cultural legacy here's a gorgeous. Highly polished, reflective, lustrous, creamy white pearl. This is not the typical, cheap, thinly covered Chinese cultured pearl. This is a genuine, high quality cultured pearl. We believe it was produced at Ago Bay, Japan, known for its high-quality cultured pearl production. From there it went to Southern India, famous in its own right for saltwater pearl

The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,

Publisher: Random House; 1968) In this dramatic study of the beginnings of European history Jacquetta Hawkes considers the culture of Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece. Finding in their union the source of Classical Greek culture. The extraordinary discoveries of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos and of Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae are part of the theme, which touches on the Homeric epics, the fall of Troy, and the legend of the Minotaur. The Cretan bull-leapers, the snake goddesses, the gold“mask of Agamemnon” and many other works of art are illustrated and interpreted. The essentially feminine character of Minoan Crete. With its palaces and gardens and its exquisite paintings, sculptures and ceramics, joins with the essentially masculine vigor of the Mycenaean kingdoms in the splendor of Bronze Age Greece. The poetry of Homer is seen as an element of continuity between this legendary period, which saw the dawn of the gods of Greece, and the golden age of Classical Greece, which witnessed the dawn of our own era. Profusely illustrated with nearly two hundred color and monochrome photographs by the brilliant Greek photographer Dimitrios Harrissiadis, Dawn of the Gods” is an important book of profound interest as well as one of striking be

Who believed that a sapphire would protect the wearer from poisonous creatures, kill snakes hiding nearby, and provide advance warning against hidden dangers. It was believed that if a sapphire were engraved with the figure of a man or a ram, that sapphire amulet would cure all illness and elevate the owner to a high position. Other medieval wearers of sapphire regarded the stone as an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, and provided protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Celebrating that cultural heritage here's a colossal. Gorgeous, richly colored natural dark blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted into a very handsome faceted oval. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone. It is a few shades lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, but given its immense size(the thicker the gemstone the less light penetrates) well past the medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. Good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent, bright blue colored"sapphires" sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United State
