Ancient Greek Hellenistic Canosan tanagra figure 300 BC
An exceptional. Extremely rare& beautiful example of Hellenistic Greek figural art. An ancient Greek Canosan terracotta female figure. Of Tanagra style, dating to approximately 300 B.C. The figure. Originally constructed in two-part mold and finished by hand in ancient times, is beautifully depicted in glorious Hellenistic style. She is shown veiled, cradling an infant in left arm, wearing long himation(gown) Which runs close to her body, the folds exquisitely rendered. Her right leg is bent at the knee. Moving forwards over her standing left. Her right foot is visible emerging from beneath her gown. One of the most spectacular figures of this type we have handled. Greek Terracotta Nude Eileithyia (Goddess of Childbirth) Statue Figure 8in
I listed this terracotta a few days ago in the Antiquities- Roman catagory for $395. My thought was that the figure represents Venus and was either from Roman Asia Minor or Roman Egypt. A kind ebayer then contacted me and offered the information that the figure actually represents Eileithya. The Greek Goddess of childbirth(the cult of Eileithya originated on Crete and then spread throughout the Greek and eventually Roman worlds. With this information I ended the listing early in order to conduct more research. I found the following: A similar figure to this one appeared on ebay.uk a while ago which the dealer listed as 4th Century BC. There exists another example in the archaelogical museum at Paestum which dates to c500- c450BC and is clearly of high classical style. The details among these three differ. Though the general form and composition ... moreis the same. This figure may be a terracotta votive of late Classical, Hellenistic, or even Roman origin which was based upon a Classical period cult statue dedicated to Eileithya. There is also the possibility that this statue is a grand tour copy, or even a modern copy. Eilithia holds her robe open to reveal her nude body and sculpturally engage the surrounding space. Children cling to her from behind each shoulder. The statue stands approx. 8 1/4in. It is intact and unrepaired with a few minor chips and a larger loss to the figure's hair. There is a small amount of wear to the details and scattered surface deposits along with scattered minor pitting to the surface. From a private CT collection. Said to have been formed in the 1920's. Offered with a $99 opening bid and no reserve as grand tour or modern. I will let ebay experts decide it's exact origins. Please Read Before Bidding: 1) Due to a rash of low feedback bidder non-payers I now require that all bidders with feedback scores of less than 10 contact me before bidding. I will cancel all bids placed by those who do not. 2) International Buyers: shipping for items weighing less that 4lbs. with a value bel

Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Bell Krater - 375 BC
A beautifully painted. Well provenanced ancient Magna-Graecian Red-Figure Bell Krater, produced in Apulia and dating to the early 4th century B.C. The piece is of typical form for Bell Kraters of this period. With a disc foot, short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip. Adorning the piece bilaterally are two looped handles. On the obverse is a Dionysiac scene. A nude young satyr is depicted standing with his torso turned towards the female figure. Holding a kalathos(a vase often regarded as a fertility symbol) in his left hand and a phiale(offering plate) in his outstretched right. The satyr also wears a necklace and diadem in his hair. Opposite the satyr stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing diaphanous himation(gown) along with bracelets. Earrings, necklace and a saccos(hair net) She holds a wreath and a thyrsus. ... moreThe thyrsus. Associated with Dionysus and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek religion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos such as the maenad depicted, Euripides wrote that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The scene depicted on the reverse shows two himation clad youths each holding a staff. Two opposing jumping weights are depicted above. Perhaps indicating that they are athletes. On the rim is a wreath of ribbed laurel leaves. Whilst below the figurework on both sides is a band of meanders punctuated by chequer squares. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) Height: 11 inches. Width at the mouth: 12 inches. Condition: Very good. A couple of fragments reattached at the lip, otherwise unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Spanish art market. Previously in the collection of Mr. Ricardo Batista Noguera, a historian and ancient art expert. Unusually for collectors of his period Mr Noguera photographed

Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Lekythos Ritual Drinking Scene - 350 BC
An ancient Greek red figure lekythos(oil flask) vessel with beautiful painted decoration of a festival scene. Dating to around 350– 300 BC. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The painted decoration depicts a youth shown nude, wearing only a ring of charms from his shoulder, kneeling and raising a ritual wine cup( skyphos) Swirling tendrils border the scene. The shape. Style and subject of this beautiful vessel reflect strong Attic influence. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honour of Dionysus. The Anthesteria was an important festival to celebrate the maturing of the wine, which was opened on the first day ... moreand then consumed during various rituals. Amongst these was a drinking contest organised for the young boys, adorned with charms(as shown on this vessel) who drank from small jugs specially presented to them for the occasion. Though we are presented with a scene redolent with the vibrancy of ancient Greek life. It is poignant that lekythos vessels such as this piece were used to anoint the dead prior to burial and are often found in funerary contexts. As such. This vessel and the scene it depicts have a somewhat haunting presence, reflecting both the joys and fleeting nature of life itself. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. German art market. With Mr. K. Jorg. Previously in a German private collection and acquired around 1975. Ancient Greek Attic Black Figure Pottery Lekythos Calydonian Boar Scene - 450 BC
A beautiful ancient Greek Attic black figure Lekythos. Dating to approximately 450- 420 BC. Dating to the golden age of the Athenian civilisation, this stunning piece depicts one of the most popular myths of the ancient Greek world. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a disc base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The piece is decorated with a dramatic scene; a powerful boar is confronted by two soldiers on horseback, positioned either side as they hurl spears at the beast, a third figure on foot bends down to wrestle with the frantic animal. The shoulder of the vessel decorated with exuberant rays and dots. It is likely this vivid scene depicts the hunt of the Calydonian Boar. One of the monsters of Greek mythology that had to be overcome by heroes of the Olympian Age. Sent by Artemis ... moreto ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia because its king failed to honour her in his rites to the gods, the boar was killed in the Calydonian Hunt, in which many heroes took part. Like the quest for the Golden Fleece or the Trojan War that took place the following generation, the Calydonian Hunt is one of the most prominent of the Greek myths, and offered a natural subject for ancient artists. The piece is accompanied by a Thermoluminescence certificate from Oxford Authentication. Attesting to the authenticity of the piece, Oxford Authentication are the world leaders in TL testing, and are used by museums and auction houses throughout the world. Height: 5 ¼ inches. ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS (?)
Normal 0 ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS( I’m not experienced in this kind of art. This piece got into my hands incidentally without any authentication papers. And I am not sure about its age and/or origin. Hope that you as a collector would know better than me. On the personal note, I’m always very careful and have NEVER sold a fake. I cannot be a pro in every period/ artist and an honest mistake is always possible. Finally, if you find any discrepancy after you buy the item, your money back is guaranteed! Terracotta figurine depicts a woman standing with the weight on her right leg. Figure is tightly wrapped in a himation over a floor-length chiton. Her head is turned slightly to her right. Her arms crossed on her chest underneath the himation. It measures about 7 1/4” tall. The base measures 2 3/8” X 1 3/4” There is ... morea vent cut in the reverse side of the figurine. Remains of pink paint on her face and light red and blue on the himation. The clay around her neck is chipped. Possibly her head was veiled by himation. And after a close inspection I found a hairline crack on inside surface of the figurine, close to the base, but the clay is intact. P.S. I found information on-line about the similar figurines: Tanagras” are named after the site in Boeotia. Central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. Most Tanagra figures are mold-made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure the even distribution of heat during the firing. After firing. The figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally“modelers of girls” Dear Buyer, Your bid is a commitment. Pl
