Rounded body, circular, ridged foot, bail handle and vertical, round spout with flat, ridged mouth. The piece is decorated centrally with a stamped center of a plump male, shown seated left, likely a depiction of Silenus or a comic Actor. The Guttus was an ancient Greek vessel used for pouring oil for use in bathing. Cosmetics and as dedication in the form of libation. An ancient native Italic Daunian polychrome painted Anthropomorphic Kyathos. Dating to approximately 350 B.C. A highly decorated and imaginative ceramic. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. A beautifully painted. Well provenanced ancient Magna-Graecian Red-Figure Bell Krater, produced in Apulia and dating to the early 4th century B.C. The piece is of typical form for Bell Kraters of this period. With a disc foot, short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip. Adorning the piece bilaterally are two looped handles. On the obverse is a Dionysiac scene. A nude young satyr is depicted standing with his torso turned towards the female figure. Holding a kalathos(a vase often regarded as a fertility symbol) in his left hand and a phiale(offering plate) in his outstretched right. The satyr also wears a necklace and diadem in his hair. Opposite the satyr stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing diaphanous himation(gown) along with bracelets. Earrings, necklace and a saccos(hair net) She holds a wreath and a thyrsus. ... moreThe thyrsus. Associated with Dionysus and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek religion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos such as the maenad depicted, Euripides wrote that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The scene depicted on the reverse shows two himation clad youths each holding a staff. Two opposing jumping weights are depicted above. Perhaps indicating that they are athletes. On the rim is a wreath of ribbed laurel leaves. Whilst below the figurework on both sides is a band of meanders punctuated by chequer squares. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) Height: 11 inches. Width at the mouth: 12 inches. Condition: Very good. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honour of Dionysus. Apulian Askos in Native Italic Style Size: 11.7cm(H) x 10.2cm(L) 5"H) x 4"L) Description: Creamy buff clay double-spouted jar with cream slip wash decorated with black-sepia paint in the native Italic style. Wide circular body with flat base and looped handle rising from middle of body. Wide filler spout rises vertically from top of body on one side. Slightly concave front on, with flaring mouth and wide flat rim. Narrow exit spout protrudes from opposite side of body at an angle, straight and slightly cone-shaped, measuring approx. 3cm. The main body is decorated with a repetitive linear pattern of vertical bands of arrow-shaped chevrons all round in black-sepia paint, enclosed within a black outline around handle and spouts above and two concentric lines below on the base. If it was a dish with a shallow bowl and the rim of the bowl had a ledge to receive a lid, and there was a lid, it was called a lekanis. This vessel had an early history in Attic pottery; it was known in the Geometric period. The lekanis proper comes in during the second half of the sixth century and is especially popular in red-figure and the black painted pottery of the late fifth century. Vessels of this shape frequently appear as wedding gifts in scenes of bridal processions on red-figure vases. An ancient Apulian Greek red-figure fish plate. Dating to the 4th century BC. Sitting upon a short stem base. With two bream, two molluscs and a spotted torpedo fish around a central garum(fish sauce) recess. The shoulder of the plate decorated with rolling waves, whilst the face itself is gently sloped for collecting juices, ingeniously designed, the shape also recalls the gently rolling sea floor, the source of the bounty. The shallow dish with footed base and two ribbon-like looped handles. The decoration on the outer dish, painted in red-brown, depicts a laurel wreath, whilst the inside also features a wreath, the tondo at the centre with a palmette. The kylix is one of the most elegant ancient Greek ceramic shapes. A large and beautiful ancient Greek Apulian red-figure lekanis. Dating to 350– 300 BC. The lekanis of typically elegant form. The shallow bowl painted in black, standing on a stemmed foot and with two wide ribbon-like handles set on the sides, the lid with disc handle decorated with a starburst motif. The main register with beautifully exuberant red-figure decoration; on one side is an androgynous winged Eros, seated on a rock and staring wistfully over his shoulder, depicted nude but wearing a profusion of beads, anklets and bracelets, he holds an ornate mirror in his right hand and bells in his left. A beautifully painted ancient Greek Apulian red-figure bell krater. Dating to the 4th century BC and originating from a prominent private collection. The krater with disc foot. Short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip, two ribbon-like handles are set bilaterally, beneath the rim is a chevron pattern. The obverse with a nude satyr striding forward and carrying a flaming torch in his right hand, he wears ribbons tied into his hair and across his chest, a thyrsus stands in the background. On the reverse stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing himation gown along with bracelets, earrings, necklace and beads in her hair, she holds a jewellery box and thyrsus. The thyrsus, associated with Dionysus(god of wine) and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek ... morereligion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos, it was believed that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice.
