Probably by a London silversmith(I cannot decipher the maker's ... moremark) Mote spoons were specifically developed in the 1700s as an integral part of the British fascination with tea and its role in upper class society. The pierced bowl of the mote spoon is very decorative, but also it would have been used to add and remove tea leaves in the brewing process, while the sharpened end would have been used to clean out any clogged areas in the teapot. The spoon has a beautifully pierced bowl(imagine the difficulty of creating this delicate symmetrical pattern by hand) and is marked on the back of the handle with a lion passant and a rubbed cursive maker's mark(which I can't decipher- hopefully someone else can) It is 5 inches long and in excellent condition(other than the rubbed marks) Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself.
