About The Medieval Jewelry Medieval Jewelry was produced during 1066– 1485 A.D. The Crusades and Sumptuary Laws were a big influence on medieval jewelry. ... moreThe jewelry types. Styles, fashions and designs of the medieval period were highly influenced by new trade with the East following the Crusades. Items of religious jewelry increased including the use of rosary beads and religious pendants. Sumptuary laws imposed in England and other European countries fiercely regulated who could wear jewelry to ensure that the upper class structure was maintained. The name Crusade was given to the Holy Wars between the Christians and the Muslims and came from old French word'crois' meaning'cross' One of the most important effects of the Crusades was on commerce as it extended the market for eastern wares in Europe. Venice, Pisa, and Genoa acquired great wealth by the opening up of trade with the East and importing goods to all the European lands. New types of precious stones. Pearls were introduced into Europe and influenced medieval jewelry. The bodkin became a popular piece of Medieval jewelry which was a heavily jeweled hairpin heavily used in the Renaissance era. The Renaissance also saw the introduction of the gimmel ring which was a double ring that consisted of two or more interlocking rings. The gimmel ring was a gift given to lovers as it symbolized the union of two people. Sumptuary laws fiercely regulated who could wear jewelry to ensure that the upper class structure was maintained. Only royalty and the nobility were allowed to wear precious gemstones such as diamonds. Rubies, emeralds and sapphires. About This Ring This very rare signet ring is very large in size and is weighty. Its band is incredibly symmetrical and smooth making for a very comfortable wear tod

Byzantine Bronze Amulet Pendant and Bronze Cross Ring Set
Byzantine Bronze Amulet Pendant and Bronze Cross Ring Set measures: 56 mm/ 39 mm dia: 23 mm weight: 28 g The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, ... morebut the empire reached its greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. It is today known as'the eternal city' The Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC. Modern historians though believe it was the year 625 BC. Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. They then instead had a council known as the'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the'Roman Republic'The word'Republic' itself comes from the Latin(the language of the Romans) ... morewords'res publica' which mean'public matters' or'matters of state' The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans. The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. The second highest class were the equestrians(sometimes they are called the'knights' Their name means the'riders' as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- almost 500 years. The Roman empire in the end was overrun by

In 395, Theodosius shares the empire between his two sons. The Western Empire fell in 476, whereas the Byzantine Empire remained, with many trials and tribulations until 1453. However things are not that simple. The rise of R

Pretty Bronze Ring w/ Gilding fr Baltic Region est.d Byzantine or Victorian sz 8
This is a beautifully decorated ladies bronze ring in size 8* which was found in the Baltic region of Europe during a metal detector expedition and purchased on eBay in 2013. My best estimate of its age falls within the Byzantine and Victorian periods. Its scroll work is made plainly visible by conveniently located remains of original gilding. Its setting also shows a remnant of black stone. Suggesting its forcible removal and strong likelihood of it being Black Onyx, given its popularity and frequent use during those centuries of the past. It could be worn without a gemstone. Particularly once its remaining shard of stone is removed. Or a replacement flat backed gemstone of any color or a small, round faced gold or smooth carved stone relic could potentially be mounted making it customized to perfectly suit and display one's individual ... moretaste for antiquities with pride. Please write with any questions or if you would like me to add shipping insurance. I will adjust your invoice accordingly. Please pay within 3 days of the close of the auction. Measurement of mounting area will be added shortly. So please save to your watching list and check back. Thanks and Happy Bidding!

Constantinople. The Roman techniques and styles continued to form the foundation of Byzantine goldsmith's skills who weren't complete copycats; some innovations such as the use of Christian iconography and further specialization of new and old techniques occurred. In the Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role. It acted as a way to express ones status and as a diplomatic tool. In 529 AD. Emperor Justinian took up laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry in a new set of laws, later to be called the Justinian Code. He explicitly writes that sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the emperor's use but every free man is entitled to wear a gold ring. This may tell us something about the widespread use and great popularity of jewelry. One could easily argue that there hadn't been a need for such a law if jewelry had been a purely aristocratic phenomenon. The Byzantine Empire was wealthy. It had gold mines within its borders and its geographical position was perfect for trade between the East and West. Successful traders. Military officers and high officials in the empire's administration would all have been in the position to afford luxurious jewelry. In an attempt to keep jewelry exclusive Justinian ruled that only he got to decide who wore the finest jewels by presenting his favorite'servants' with presents from the imperial workshops.
