Antique 19th Century Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator with Saints at His Feet
This is an antique icon. Russian in origin, from a private collection. It portrays Christ as the Teacher, the book open to scripture, with two Saints supplicant by his feet. The feet themselves are highly detailed. The robes, in red and black and gold, delicately draped. The book of scripture is held with a cloth, showing reverence for the word. The right hand of Christ is raised. Christ is elevated slightly on a platform, and the fingers of the Saints are highly detailed as well. Faces are rubbed, and all but obliterated by those who have touched them. This Icon dates circa 1830. On the rear, the original blade marks for cutting the wood for the icon are plainly seen. One of the stretch bars, installed to keep the icon from bending, is missing. There are worm holes, and losses to be expected on an item like this. We will do our best to describe the icon and hopefully it will assist you in dating it. This icon measures 13 1/8" tall by 9 3/4" wide. The board is 1" thick. This icon appears to have plaster over the wood and the paint on top of the plaster. There are some issues and we will try to describe them the best we can. The painting has Jesus in the center and what appears to be depictions of John the Baptist on the right side. We're not sure if the depictions on the left side are another ... morebiblical story or if it is also related to John the Baptist. At the top of the painting is a depiction of God(we think) In this area there is what appears to be some repainting. Mainly in the clouds around God. There are a few tiny pieces of chipped paint in the face of God mainly on his forehead. The top depiction on the right side appears to be in fairly good condition. The image of the person to the left of John the Baptist's head has some cracking to the paint on his face. But it is all there and nothing is missing. The depiction on the lower right side appears to be the beheading of John the Baptist. This depiction appears to be in good condition with no major flaws. The depiction on the upper left side also appears to be in good condition. There is some cracking to the paint on the faces of the three figures. In the depiction on the lower left side three of the peoples faces have some minor amount of missing paint. The woman of the left is the only one without any missing paint.
