1945 magazine article about American Soldiers reactions to worldwide natives
This is a magazine article about some American soldier's reactions/encounters with native people. Mainly in Africa and the South Pacific. Quoting the first page“It'll take more than bullets and battles to win this war. I figure it'll need a lot of knowing and real understanding of the'how come' of the customs of the people we're going to deal with. This sage comment came from a Yank who had served all the way from North Africa to Burma and on some of the remote island dots in the Southwest Pacific. I talked with scores of returned Yanks whose naive narrations have a fresh vigor and a homeland humor akin to Mark Twain's Innocents Abroad. Amazingly often their first-hand accounts. If not their rhetoric and terminology, check with the observations of geographers and ethnologists who kindly interpreted them for me. ... moreBelieve me. one returned Yank exclaimed, we sure had to keep our taboos and'to do's' straight! We had to remember. If we were in Africa, or even in India, that we weren't supposed to stare at people, especially kids, my war-zone trotter continued. It had something to do with the'evil eye, so we were told. But if we were in Burma, well, that was another story. Parents there liked to have us notice their kids. They were like us that way. They thanked us when we commented on their good looks. In Africa. he went on, we had to curb our whistles and turn our heads the other way every time one of their local veiled belles came into sight. We had to remember never to spit in front of a mosque and always to take off our shoes when we went inside one. There were hundreds of such things we were supposed to remember. Did you know anything about the customs of the different countries before you landed? I asked. He handed me a couple of well-worn small pocket guides. We all get these to study and carry with us. he explained. The Army furnishes them. In later talks with returned Yanks I learned that men of the first divisions who went into some Pacific areas didn't have

2 Primitive Carvings Assumed To Be From South American Tribal Natives. I was told these carvings are from primitive South America because of the hat styles. The use or exact carvers are unknow. As is the age. I haven't confirmed but it feels like real hair on the carvings. The wood is very light. The taller carving is 12" and the shorter is 10" I've found these pieces to be extremely interesting and if you discover any detail about the source of these I would greatly appreciate the information.

Sold American Alaska Natives & Thier Land Donald Mitchell 1867-1959 Gold Rush AK
Sold American is an account of the history of the federal government's relationship with Alaska's Indian. Eskimo, and Aleut peoples, from the United States' purchase of Alaska from the czar of Russia in 1867 to Alaska statehood in 1959. Don Mitchell describes how, from the arrival of Russian sea otter hunters in the Aleutian Islands in the eighteenth century to the present day, Alaska Natives have participated in the efforts of non-Natives to turn Alaska's bountiful natural resources into dollars, and documents how Alaska Natives, non-Natives, and the society they jointly forged have been changed because of it. Sold American also tells the story of how and why Congress was persuaded that Alaska Natives should be compensated for the extinguishment of their legally cognizable right(known as"aboriginal title" to use ... moreand occupy the land on which they and their ancestors had hunted, fished, and gathered since time immemorial. Erich Sokol American Natives drawing reproductions 1959
Erich Sokol Drawings from American Natives Erich Sokol was born in 1933 in Vienna Austria and died in 2003. He is best known for his cartoons in Playboy. But also contributed to Harper's Magazine, Sunday Telegraph, Neue Kronen Zeitung, and published numerous books of his own. He had a gift as a caricaturist and is considered one of the best illustration artists of the 20th century. Two retrospective monographs have been published on the artist in the past 15 years and the Karikatur Museum in Krems Austria held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 2005. Many fans are awaiting the release of a book on Playboy's cartoons similar to that of the New Yorker. A simple search on the internet shows that he has a large following with bloggers. The two drawing reproductions available in this auction were taken from the pages of American ... moreNatives published by Harper& Brothers in 1960. This was Sokol's first monograph as an illustrator. He had already begun illustrating the pages of Playboy magazine and was gaining in reputation in Europe and the United States. The first image shows a boxer holding his trophy victoriously. He seems worn down by the fight holding his tapped had only slightly above his head and has a black eye. The drawing has a quick spontaneos feel that demonstrates the artist's skill with pen. Ink and wash. The second image is more methodical and depicts a US boy scout. The scout is shown with a serious expression and poised for action while the other children play in the background. Is this Sokol's statement on American youth of 1959? The scout is complete with his first aid kit. Map, canteen, compass, watch, whistle, flag, notebook, and bears 14 badges. For more information about Sokol's Playboy cartoons. Set of 7 Lead Toy Indians (American Natives) Vintage 1950
Thank you for looking into our auction of a SET OF 6 MINIATURE METAL INDIANS. VINTAGE 1950. This group of iIndians was given to me as a Christmas gift in 1949 or1950, if I remember correctly. I played with them a lot, and they show it, but they are in pretty good condition overall, considering their age. we have tried to show that problems in the photos- the missing hatchets, the missing arrow points, the cracked bow and the dented shield. Besides that, there is some paint loss in tiny spots, but that is to be expected given their age and the fact that they were played with by a child. Unfortunately, there is nothing to indicate where or by whom these toys were made, but they have stood the test of time really well. They measure approximately 2-3/4 inches to the highest point. If you become the winning bidder in more than one of our auctions. ... moreContact us, and we will try to combine your items for shipping, in order to reduce the overall costs of shipping the items to you. ANTIQUE PHOTOGRAPHS SOUTH AMERICAN INDIANS NATIVES 1898 EAR SPACERS LOT OF 4
Offered here is a lot of 4 antique photographs shot in San Pedro Argentina in 1898. They depict and capture south American Natives. Although the shooter admits they have changed their dress in some of them due to his presence. The most interesting of the photos depicts a man with rather large ear spacers; this photo measures 5" x 3.5" The other three are smaller measuring 4" x 3" one depicts a family standing out front of their hut, one depicts a man posing in front of some crops with a"tambetta" lip button, and one(this one is difficult to make out because it's so washed out) depicts a group of children outside of a school at a Mission in San Pedro. There is hand writing on the back of each one describing the situation and dating them 1898.
