DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Houghton) is thought to have been commissioned about 1522 by Shah Isma'il, the founder of the Safavid Dynasty, as a present for his son, Prince Tahmasp. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Age of Louis XVI by Alvar ... moreGonzalez Palacios. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 158 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) The arts during the reign of Louis XV were a perfect reflection of the exuberant spirit of the times. The leader of this eighteenth century“permissive society” was Madame de Pompadour. The King’s mistress. She had a decisive influence on the arts, as on everything else, giving them, as the author remarks, just that exquisitely graceful and feminine touch which still fascinates us today” This feminine touch is best seen in the asymmetrical swirling lines of the Rococo style which dominated the decorative arts in the first half of the eighteen century. Whorls appeared on the magnificent furniture as lavish ormolu mounts on commodes and writing tables. And on the silver candlesticks and entrée dishes that twist and twirl. Even Boucher’s coy nudes are painted with the same voluptuous contortions. The splendid illustrations bring out the vitality and charm of all the arts; painting. Sculpture, architecture, furniture, porcelain, tapestries and silver; while the author, Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios fills in the fascinating background of the period. CONDITION: Lightly read hardcover in price-clipped dustjacket. Hamlyn/Cameo(1969) 158 pages. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmutilated, and tightly bound; except that the front and back endpapers show slight age toning/tanning from contact with the dustjacket. Looks like the book was read once or twice, then put on a bookshelf, forgotten. Cloth covers are immaculate. Dustjacket shows mild edge and corner shelfwear including a diagonal one inch tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the back side. The dustjacket's spine is also somewhat sun-faded, and the inside, lower corner of the front side of the jacket is price-clipped(a tiny corner cut out of the inside flap so the publisher's price no longer shows(as if it was

African Elegance" By Ettagale Blauer. Published in New York by Rizzoli in 1999. DISCUSSION: This lovely book“captures the essence of traditional style as it is reflected in the arts and crafts of the African continent. From elaborate beaded jewelry to beautifully carved wooden vessels. It provides a superb visual record. Drawing upon many years of experience and travel in Africa, the author describes how objects are used in traditional ceremonies and rituals. From the vibrant, carved coffins of Ghana and the treasures made by sixteenth century Benin metalsmiths to sleek studies in serpentine crafted by Shona sculptors of Zimbabwe, this book reveals how people display themselves, communicate with each other, and tell stories based on the time-honored ideas about beauty and design” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 10”x13” 176 pages, color illustrations, ... moredust jacket. BOOK : BEING OBJECT/ ART (art, African, Océanie, Asian, Africa, Southeast Asia
Being Object. Being Art 323 pages color photos Hard cover with dust jacket 28 x 22 cm 1.962 kg English Cultures contribute to the richness of this world through their uniqueness and variety- as do their material products. This is reflected in the ethnographic collections from Africa. The Americas, Southeast Asia, Oceania and East Asia at the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt am Main. Using exceptional photographs. 130 works are presented from a total of approximately 67,000 objects in the museum’s collection. Based on their own individual and subjective points of view, the authors have selected particularly unusual'ethnographica, everyday objects or ritual items from an abundance of mostly similar objects made by indigenous societies. The objects in this volume are not only elucidated in their ethnological contexts, but are simultaneously ... moredescribed and interpreted as works of art. In order to better understand these works of art, the authors question the environment in which a work was created and which ideas about color, form, symmetry, balance, etc. might have influenced their artists. The common goal is to present what it is about these works that are exceptional, elaborate, other, perfect or in fact imperfect, harmonious or disturbing. However. The significance of an object is not invariably determined by its original heritage and purpose. Ideas and thoughts associated with an object also alter with a change of viewers and owners. Consequently, the effect of a work of art can only be comprehended within the analysis of aesthetic ideas and a prior knowledge by its respective viewers. Here, the various aesthetic concepts of indigenous and Western societies collide and ideally will lead to reactions that mediate between the differing perspectives. Powered by The free listing tool. Book : African Dolls / Afrikanische Puppen : The Dulger Collection
African Dolls/ Afrikanische Puppen: The Dulger Collection 176 pages color photos Hard cover 25 x 17 cm 0.720 kg English& German In South Africa dolls are part of a tribe’s cultural heritage. They are objects that are laden with associations and the ritual and religious beliefs of a community. African dolls are seen as mediators between the natural and the supernatural; they were created in a great variety of materials and used for ritual. Spiritual and healing purposes. All dolls of this collection come from a Zulu household in Msinga. A tribal region in the former province of Natal, today KwaZulu-Natal, on the eastern coast of South Africa. Made by women of the tribe between 1987 and 1994, they document the end of an agrarian-oriented population and the development towards a modern industrial society in South Africa. In numerous interviews ... morewith the women of this tribe, the author Frank Jolles captured the meaning and the content of this collection, which has been passed on over many generations from mothers to daughters. An impressive collection of 109 African dolls from the second half of the twentieth century. The author describes in detail the ritual. Spiritual and healing importance of every object.

Julien Michel Leiris(1901-1990) was a French surrealist writer and ethnographer. Following a falling-out with the surrealist leader Andre Breton in 1929. Leiris contributed an essay to the anti-Breton pamphlet Un Cadavre. He also wrote an article on“The Ethnographer’s Eye(concerning the Dakar-Djibouti mission) before setting off in 1930 as the secretary-archivist in Marcel Griaule's ambitious ethnographic expedition. From this experience, Leiris published ... morehis first important book in 1934, L’Afrique fantôme, combining both an ethnographic study and an autobiographical project, which broke with the traditional ethnographic writing style of Griaule. Upon his return, he started his practice as an ethnographer at the Musee de l'Homme, a position he kept until 1971. Leiris was also a talented poet, and poetry was important in his approach to the world.
