The second thing that strikes you about this bookcase is the colour and patination. The cabinetmaker that made this bookcase chose some very good quality timbers for the job. This has resulted all these years later in a bookcase with a gorgeous soft rich warm colour and patination that can only be attained by mahogany of this age and quality. Thirdly are the proportions. The design of this bookcase is just right and the bookcase benefits from having a good balance. It is solid cherry wood throughout(even the back panel) This is a genuine 300+ year old cabinet that was recently restored(+/ 50 years ago) The age is most clearly evident in the back panel where old adze and pit saw cuts are clearly visible(see photos) The shapes of the side panel and door decorations date the cabinet to the period of Louis XIV or shortly after. Overall the cabinet is in very good restored antique condition. It is very solid with good fit and finish. The restoration work was professionally done but not historically accurate.
