The icon is in wooden kiot(icon case) Dovetailed into the back of the board are panel cross members or"back slats" for stability and to prevent warping(pictured) These back slats were used in Russian icons prior to 1880/1890. Subsequent to 1880/1890 advances in materials negated the need for these cross members. Size with kiot: 44.5 cm X 38 cm X 4 cm(18 X 15 X 2 in. size of icon without kiot: 36.5 cm X 30 cm X 2 cm(14 X 12 X 1 in) weight with kiot is 1760 g(3.9 lbs) Provenance is Athens estate.
