This gau was owned by a wealthy woman ... moreof the Lhasa nobility. The front and sides are 22k gold reddened with an iron oxide rich clay, a technique seen only in Tibet on high karat gold work. The gau is lavishly inlaid with superb sky blue Persian turquoise, emeralds, rubies, seed pearls, and white topaz. The back is copper as typical for this type of gau. There are silver floral ornaments on the front and the cylinder for taking the necklace cords is also silver lined. The repoussee work of spiral designs on the front is superb. The condition is good with dents as expected on softer high karat gold work-please see detailed pix. There is a virtually identical gau ornamenting the image of the Jowo Shakyamuni in the Potala in Lhasa. Dimensions: 4- 15/16″ x 4-9/16″ 1-1/16″ high. Two Tibetan Gau(or Ghau) prayer box pendants. 19th century. These are hand made boxes used to carry sacred relics. Magical charms and medicinal herbs. They were worn to protect the wearer whilst travelling. Both boxes have lost some turquoise. The second box has had a replacement backplate. Approximate sizes are; height 80 mm. A Very Fine Tibet Sino Tibetan Buddhist Amulet& Prayer Gau Ghao Gao Copper& Silver Box ca. 19th century. The Silk covered box contains written prayers sacred yantra diagram of the kalachakra. The prayers and yantras are hand inscribed and block-printed. The Buddha image shows age wear as expected and the box is very finely made with dragons flanking the Buddha image and a ferocious Foo Lion at its feet. Measures overall 7 X 5 X 2 1/2 inches with expected age wear in good condition. From an old NYC collection. The box was opened for photography and all elements have been returned to the original position.

Almost every man, woman and child in Buddhist Tibet and the Himalayan area of India carries a variety of charms and reliquary amulets on the body, each intended for a different purpose. This ghau has little turquoise stones laid in, the back can open. It is strung on a black cotton cord with silver and genuine coral beads. Antique Tibetan Gau Silver Inlay. Prayer Box . Worn Leather Strap.
Hello there we have this Antique Tibetan Gau for auction. It measures 2 inch x 2 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch. The only bit that I have cleaned is the silver symbol in the centre. The leather strap is very worn. There is a floral design to the four corners. I would think it dates to the late 19th century but dont hold me to this. Happy bidding to all.

Tibet. c.1850 Tibetan silver(called go go or gor-mo- meaning round) ga’u amulet box ornamented with filigree work. Genuine turquoise and coral, with a parcel gilt central medallion. The Ga’u was worn suspended from the top gadrooned tube which also has been strengthened by inserting a round cylinder of wood or yak leather. The lower decoration is a stylised dorje ornament which hangs at the bottom when worn. There probably was a loop at the bottom from which hung suspended ornaments. But appears to be missing. The dorje ornament has been mended and re soldered back to the bottom and also contains a wooden ... morecylinder inside which can been seen on close inspection in the centre back. The central field is covered in separately embossed or stamped filigree sprig leaves. Flower and petal elements, surrounding a stylized lotus bud with a central coral. The outer edge is decorated with individually stamped and applied petals of an open lotus, with a copper backing container. It is very hard to find round ga’u amulet boxes today that have the tube and stylised dorje ornament. Most are hinged on each side for wearing. As the ga’u was used as a container for handwritten or printed charms and relics. Chosen to protect the wearer, there is still a very strong herbal aroma with the ga’u. The front section has been tested and has been made from a high grade silver sheet 92.5% approx. Antique Tibetan Gau prayer amulet box on vintage turquoise coral silver necklace
Antique Tibetan prayer box. Filigree work with inlaid turquoise and coral, on a necklace with turquoise, coral, and tribal silver beads. The prayer box is very old but the necklace holding it is not antique- it is vintage(but no later than the mid-1980's. When I acquired it) The clasp of the necklace is marketed 925(sterling silver) but the silver beads would be lower purity tribal silver. The box is approx. 2 3/8 inches in greatest width(from one corner of the outer square to the opposite corner) A ruler is included in one of the photos taken of the box.
