Here we have a very beautiful Tibetan or Nepalese Thankga. The thangka portrays different scenes from the Buddha's life all around him. There are nice architectural elements to be found in the structures and their roofs. A classic subject matter brimming with tranquility. The thangka measures 20 1/2 Inches Wide X 24 1/2 Inches Long. the cloth frame is about 24 by 34 inches. On The back there are hand written prayers in red ink. I have absolutely no idea about the age or the stories being depicted on the magnaficent Thankga. This thankga is in excellent condition considering the age. There are age related creases which are commen due to the fact that these are rolled while transported. Artwork is great and details are amazing.

I don't know much about thangkas, but from the fading and condition of the fabric as well as the style of painting, I would guess that this is a 19th Century thangka, or even earlier. The fabric surround is silk and the backing is some kind of cotton cloth. There are various Chinese or Buddhist symbols on the front of the surround which I have photographed. The whole measures approximately 25 by 18 inches. It is in generally good condition with not too much fading to the silk. Some wear to the painting where it has been rolled up. This is the first time this piece has even seen the light in all this time! WOW! This Thangka must be quite old. Which is apparent on the patina and wear on the work. It appears to show a lamasery lineage but a translation of the inscriptions on the bottom. On each of the leaves, and on the back would probably identify exactly what it represents, its country of origin, and also its age. The original collector thought it was from the late 19th or early 20th century, but could be much earlier. The paintings are on hand spun linen and painted with mineral pigments. The cloth portions are dark brown and also probably hand woven. Overall length is 27 inches and overall width is 19.5 inches. AGE: I estimate this to likely be from the late 19th or early 20th century or earlier based on: the similar styles that predominate ... moreduring that period.
