Made of bronze, cast in the form of a mythical lion, depicted with its jaw open, showing fangs, a horned head, a scroll mane, scrolls on its shoulders, and a scroll tail. Its back is adorned with a foliate scroll decorated candlestick. This was probably made for use on an altar. The underside is hollow cast. This candlestick measures 9.4 cm in length and 9.1 cm in height. It weighs 239 grams. The condition is generally excellent, without damage or repair, the bronze has the patina of age. A very rare section from a Sino-Tibetan ceremonial trumpet or dung horn. C. 16th-17th century. Copper with extensive remains of silver overlay, decorated with a raised image of a Makara. The workmanship and detail on the decorated areas are superb, typical of the fine craftsmanship found in Buddhas and ritual objects of the late Ming and very early Qing periods. Trumpet is in excavated condition as seen. Misshapen and with losses. There is visible green and red oxidation. Even in its excavated state, a highly collectible item. BUDDHA: Antique Sino-Tibetan Auspicious Buddha. Bronze. Late 1800's Great Patina This is a magnificent and venerable image of the Lord Buddha cast in Bronze. Most likely in Tibet in the late 1800's. He may be earlier, but I don't think he is later. The previous owner believed this figure came from China. And, of course, China had a great influence on the art of Tibet. But his long torso and face, his bald head and the lack of certain Chinese elements like double urnas seem to me to indicate a Tibetan origin for this figure. But it is difficult to know for sure. In any case. He is a wonderful figure. Our Buddha is seated at ease. In his right hand he holds a round object. Which may be meant to be the Pearl of Wisdom or a cintamani. A kind of wish fulfilling jewel, something like the Philosopher's stone in the West. In his left ... morearm. He cradles a Rat. When the Bu ddha called all of the animals to meet. He instructed that the first twelve to arrive would receive a place of honor in the lunar calendar. The Rat was the first to arrive and received the first place of honor. In Buddhist art. The Rat often symbolizes ingenuity. Intelligence, and independence. The two things which really set this figure apart are the exquisite modeling of the face and the beautiful patina. This Buddha's facial features are deeply modeled and have a very life-like feeling to them. With his arched eyebrows. Open eyes and gentle smile, he exudes a feeling of absolute peace and cheerful accessibility. The patina of this figure is the best kind of light chocolate brown with undertones of gold and red. It can be best appreciated in the photo of his back. Where there are fewer surfaces to reflect the light and distort the color. This kind of patina is only achieved by many years of gentle handling. This Buddha is 7 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches wide at his knees. There is no damage to the figure. The bottom is sealed and has some expected roughness. Buddha: Antique Sino/Tibetan Buddha with Vitarka Mudra, Gilt Bronze. Late 1800's This is a venerable statue of the Lord Buddha cast in bronze and gilded in Tibet. I believe he dates to the late 1800's. He may be earlier. But I doubt that he is later. The previous owner believed this figure came from China. And, of course, China had a great influence on the art of Tibet. But his long torso and face seem to me more Tibetan than Chinese. But it is difficult to know for sure. In any case, he is a wonderful figure. The Lord Buddha is shown seated in vajra-paryankasana. The"adamantine throne" position, or full lotus, which is the asana. Or posture. In which prince Gautama is usually represented after achieving enlightenment. He raises his right hand in the Vitaka Mudra. The mudra. Or gesture, of giving instruction. This mudra ... moreis also sometimes called"Closing the Circle of the Law. He holds his left hand in his lap in the same mudra. He has an urna. The circular shape, in the middle of his forehead, which symbolizes a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past this universe of suffering, samsara. Into the world of enlightenment. He also has a larger circular shape in the middle of his coiffure of fine snail curls, a definite Chinese influence. This shape represents the light of wisdom which emanates from him. And he has the three rings at this neck which mark him as a person of deep spiritual understanding. This figure is 8 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches wide at the base. Which is closed. There is no serious damage to the figure. The gilding on the face, chest, hands and feet has worn somewhat, but still makes a beautiful and complex patina with the rest of the figure which has the best chocolate/purple tone. His face is beautifully modeled with strong features; raised eyebrows. Downcast eyes and a gentle smile. The photos give a very good idea of this fine example of Sacred Sino-Tibetan Art. ANTIQUE SINO-TIBETAN CHASED BRASS BOWL C1800'S This is for an antique Sino-Tibetan chased brass bowl. Circa 1800's. Made of brass. With a curved underside gracefully tapering sides with curved lip. Each side is worked with chased technique possibly depicting a horses in a stylaised manner, interspersed by foliate motifs. The circular footring is also formed by chasing away the metal, and is chased'CHINA' This bowl measures 10.5 cm in width and 4.7 cm in height. It weighs 113 grams. The condition is generally very good. There is a very old split to the rim, the brass is unpolished and has the patina of age. Please see images. Guaranteed old& original. The conch shell with carved bands and mounted with a silvered metal shaft and large rectangular plaque decorated to the center with Kirtimukha flanked by a pair of dragons, surrounded by a border of auspicious motifs set with turquoise and coral, the outer border with four bodhisattvas seated on lotus bases with flaming mandorlas, the corners with fierce Kirtimukha masks; all reserved on a pierced openwork ground with a scrolling meander fitted over a copper plaque. The back of the copper plaque with engraved inscription and central Dharmachakra(Buddhist Wheel of Law) flanked by two Vajra(Diamond Thunderbolt) The top fitted ... morewith loose rings and silk strap carrying handle adorned with cowry shells. The conch shell in Tibetan Buddhist art symbolizes the far-reaching sound of the Buddha's sacred teaching. Which spreads in all directions like the sound of the conch trumpet. Dimensions: 16.25" long x 12.5" high x 4" deep(excluding silk hanger) Weight: 5.3 lbs. Condition: Overall. The trumpet is in fair/good condition. There is considerable dirt/dust to the surface; with some oxidation to the metal and light dents/bending along the edges of the horn and decorative mounts. The surface with losses to the stone inlay, two of the stones possibly replaced. Nicely worn, the conch shell with some scratching/wear to the surface; the shell slightly loose, with two replaced metal/wire fasteners along the lower edge. Possibly Tara, set with turquoise and ruby coloured gems and dating from the 19th century or possibly earlier. The semi dressed figure holds her hands together and wears a beaded necklace and raised crown with leafy stems to either side. The goddess wears a collar with a turquoise and two ruby gems with further jewels mounted in other elements of her jewellery crown. Turquoise is also inset to the leafy stems. The figure has a copper applied base with a moulded flora design to the underside. The figure is not marked. This item has been fully inspected in house. ANTIQUE SINO TIBETAN PARCEL GILT VAJRASATTVA STATUE Sealed Base. Mid 1800s to Early 1900s Exquisite. Sino Tibetan statue depicting Vajrasattva seated upon a lotus base. Magnificent detail, finely cast in copper and finished with parcel gilt highlights. Seated in dhyanasana, clad in a flowing dhoti, surmounted by an ornate crown and bedecked in jewels, the statue displays a serene countenance. The figure delicately holds a dorje in the right hand and a bell in the left, the traditional Tibetan ritual objects symbolizing power and wisdom. The underside remains sealed with the inset copper baseplate bearing the double vajra seal, indicating consecration by a Tibetan lama after placing sacred items inside. Great attention to detail makes this piece quite exceptional. The headdress, earrings, and necklace display inset red stones, the dhoti is ... moreedged with ornate brocades, and the expressive face and hands are exceptionally well cast. MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE SINO TIBETAN CAST IRON BUDDHA ALTAR STATUE Early 1900s Exquisite Sino Tibetan cast iron statue of the seated Buddha upon a highly detailed lotus throne. Seated in the padmasana pose upon a beautiful double lotus. Clad in a flowing dhoti, with a face displaying great serenity. The piece is well cast, with great attention to detail. Tightly curled hair pulled up into a topknot, a bindi between the eyebrows, downward cast eyes, all carefully rendered. The entirety of all the imagery exhibits great strength, yet is peaceful. The statue measures approximately 7 1/8" high and is quite heavy. In excellent antique condition with just scattered wear and soiling commensurate with age, bearing a sublime, rich patina. EXTREMELY RARE 18/19th C SINO-TIBETAN SILK FUNERARY COVER w/ GOLD THREAD
An EXTREMELY RARE and large Sino-Tibetan funerary cover. 18th-19th century, Red-colored satin-weave silk with gold metallic thread. Made in China for the Tibetan market. I have only seen a handful of these in my lifetime, and they are all pretty much identical, with only the color of the silk ground to differ- made with either a red(such as this one) gold, or blue-black silk ground, and all with gold metallic thread. As of December 1995. The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art owned two, but not with a red ground. From their catalog: Item 135"it has a stupa as its central motif. With the Sanskrit Dharani Sutra text woven in gold thread within the stupa. Such funerary covers were used only for a deceased emperor, an empress dowager, an empress, or an imperial concubine… In addition to the stupa. the complex design[also] consists of…circles ... moreand rectangles containing Lantsa and Chinese writing…Delicate flower and other decorations[vajra images] are throughout. The design is constructed by the introduction of a supplemental weft of thread with a slim inner core. Paper intermediate wrapping, and gold metallic outer wrapping, creating a rich, damask like effect. Overall in excellent condition for such a delicate silk textile of this age. However, there are a few minor issues. Loose threads(but not affecting the decoration) a couple areas of the edge that are torn or fraying, one discolored area(the photo makes it look worse than it is) and two small areas near the bottom with a couple white paint drips. All these issues could be easily restored by a quality professional. Offered with an extremely low opening bid. Very large at approximately 88" x 55" Item sold as is.
