A Geographical View of the Extension of the Sanscrit Family. A lovely and I believe quite unusual map showing the distribution of languages. Engraved for’The Bible of Every Land’ This map comes from the first edition in 1851. It’s quite small with the sheet measuring approx 20cm x 25.5cm. Condition is good. The printed area is clean and fresh. A little bit of faint brown spotting. More visible on the verso. Spotting more apparent in the margins but still quite limited; also some handling soiling in the margins. Verso blank. I’ll post it supported by some light board. This map is taken from an atlas. Titled DESCRITION DE L’UNIVERSE by Alain Manesson Mallet. Published in 1683. A truly gorgeous map. Handsomely matted; all it needs is to be framed. Alain Manesson Mallet(1630–1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV. Became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portungal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. His major publications were Description de ... moreL'Univers(1683- 1719) in 5 volumes. And Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre(1684) in 3 volumes. His Description de L'Universe contains a wide variety of information. Including star maps, maps of the ancient and modern world, and a synopsis of the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in his text. It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to his being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in the charming harbor scenes and rural landscapes that he included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Antique British India Hutch
Excellent condition antique hutch. Not positive but matches kitchen cabinets which are distressed Cherry. Picture with columns shows hutch being used as a wine cabinet. I've had it for many years and have used it in many different room arrangements. Great condition but not highly refinished. 99% of carvings are intact. All shelved and drawers in good condition and wood shows only minor wear and tear.
