Map is in Fair condition with the biggest problems appearing at the border areas. There are creases at all four corners. There is moderate browning and a few small rips along the edge. There are holes across the top where it was originally bound. There are some darker stains around some of the outer edges and some stains affecting the actual map area. 1851 Very Decorative Tallis Map- Southern India The John Tallis company were prominent publishers in the mid-nineteenth century but are best known for producing"the last great decorative world atlas" when they issued'The Illustrated Atlas' in 1851. All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein. This steel engraving of the southern part of India shows the area south of Gujerat in the west and south of the Ganges delta in the east. It includes the island of Sri Lanka. There are seven attractive vignette scenes around the map area: Shuhur. Jeypoor, Seal of the East India company, Tomb of Sultan Mahomed, Bejapoor, two statues and Government House, Calcutta. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. The AA Road Map of Northern India
This map measures 6" by 8.5" It has 16 cloth backed. Double sided panels It has clearly been used. It is a little frayed round the edges and the corners are a little battered. There are a few small coffee and biscuit stains on the map! There is no sign of a date on it but pre 1900 fits with when family members were in India. I apologise if I am badly wrong. Because the maps are printed back to back, only one side can be displayed. Condition: Good. Aging around the margins. Which just adds to the appeal of the old map. The paper is fairly fragile, so map page will need to be protected from less than careful handling. Note: the page was just a bit too big for the scanner, so part of the margin area is not shown. Some edge wear and small tears that are well clear of the map and would be covered with a frame.The map was printed a bit crooked(as was common in the 19th century printing) but this will not show when it is framed. This very large map of India is made in two parts. Each measuring about 67.25" 170.3cm) wide by 32.5" 82.5cm) high, so the overall size is about 67.25" wide by 65" high. It is in 48 sections(24 each half) dissected and backed on linen. It is about 11" by 8.4" when folded. Please see the photograph for the full title and description of the map. Light browning of the cloth backing shows slightly on the front of three blank sections and there is slight surface"rippling" of the paper on three other sections- also blank. Overall. However, the map is in very good clean condition with the original bright hand colouring.
