Normal 0 false false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This ancient Chinese earthenware Terracotta Offering Bowl is from my personal collection. It is a museum quality example of an ancient Chinese ritual terracotta bowl that would have been used to hold offerings to the Gods or as ritual tomb objects that would accompany the souls of the wealthy elite in the next life. This wonderful bowl appears to date to the late Yongshao Culture(3200-2200 BC) and would likely have come from the Xi'an. The capital of China for over 1,000 years and 13 Dynasties-including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang Dynasties! Xi'an is also the home of the famous Terracotta Warriors. This bowl measures approximately 6.2" in diameter x 4" tall and weighs 1.22 lbs. 19.5 oz. or 552 grams) But what makes this small bowl truly unique are the ancient Chinese characters that were painted on and below the two small. Lug handles. These characters are in an ancient style known as Ku’wen that is the earliest form of the written Chinese language. Although I’m not an expert in translating ancient Chinese. I believe a rough translation is as follows: This Offering Bowl Contains 10 Handfuls of Millet From the Five Emperors on Earth” It is believed to have been made for the express purpose of offering a ritual serving of food to the gods. It would have likely been filled with millet. Rice, grain sorghum, or broom-corn-which were all staple foods 2,000 years ago in China. These types of tomb implements are called"spirit goods
