They generally have a curved top that slopes in both directions and built using a variety of construction methods including molded ply and barrel construction among others. Within this style of trunks are a few other names that have come about based on the positioning of the wood slates that cover the dome construction. The exact origin of these names is unknown but seem reasonable and listed below as I understand them. Barrel Stave Trunks(1860-1885) they generally date a bit earlier than most of the dome tops made and have horizontal running slats instead of vertical(end to end vs. over the top) Giving it a slightly different look. The word"stave" in this case refers to the wood slats. These trunks were mostly made from the late 1860's until about the mid 1880s when the other dome construction methods listed below became more widely used. Often early examples of this style have a graceful. Well proportioned look and the later examples into the 1870's are quite simply well made. This trunk is in good condition. Obviously it will show wear marks from age as it is over 100 years old. No rotted metal or holes present. Aren't you just drawn to these old trunks?To me. They represent a much simpler time in this country. It's that emotional connection that makes them so appealing to collectors, and will only increase the value of the piece in time. This chest may be a Jenny Lind(the top of the line for its time) due to the keyhole in front(no key included; has a lock. But whoever had the key locked the latch-trunk still opens and shuts, just doesn't lock without key, but has latches on each side) but I can not positively identify it as a Jenny Lind. I am unsure what type of wood this chest is made of, but it is dated circa 1880-1910 due to the embossed metal coverings, and the fact that the low flat tops were created beginning in 1880. This is a very hard to find 3-slat topped chest, as most for sale are only 2 slats. It has hardwood staves with metal trim and added hardware. The inside has the pins left for holding the cloth that used to be inside. It would make a great antique collector's addition, or could even be made into a table! This is a ca. 1885 Antique refinished metal covered flat top trunk. All parts are original. It is 28.5"x 17"x 20"tall and weighs 40 lbs. It is sometimes called a monitor or waterfall trunk. The lock is marked Pat`d April 15. 1879 and the slat caps are marked Pat`d March 1880. The key has been lost. It is clad with metal with oak slats. It is possible that it was made by Charles Taylor, New York. The interior is very unusual. It has a double tray hinged system that slides out of way on steel runners. The trays are finished pine and the inside is finish with a lovely floral print. It can be pick-up or you can make arragements to have it shipped. Look carefully at the photos. No returns. Antique Refinished Steamer Trunk Ca. 1870's -1880's
Up for auction today we have recently refinished slightly curved top trunk antique steamer trunk that has been freshly refinished inside and outside. Dating to the 1870's- 1880's. This trunk is heavy and solid. It measures: 30 x 19 x 21.5 inches and weighs approximately 45 pounds. The dried canvas was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. The wood was sanded smooth a handful of times. And then stained with Golden Oak, then a coat of Tung Oil, and a two coats of Satin Polyurethane to seal it- a very nice smooth finish. The metal ware was not painted. Handles are still there with original end caps. Side has the initials of P.E. L, and Andover, ME on one of the slats. My sweet mom lined the inside with one of my favorite fabrics. A nice reddish gold cotton fabric- looks just amazing and ready to store blankets, linens, photographs, ... moreimportant documents, and what ever other treasures you might have. This size trunk is great as an end table or under a window for plants- with being slightly curved top, you still can place your coffee cup on it with no worries. Great for books, magazines, coffee table books, etc. The back of this trunk has added interesting hinges- these hinges look to have been added after the trunk was made. Not sure when, but they are the style that makes a trunk not need a lid stay- the top will open all the way and these hinges prevent the trunk from bending back to far. Vintage Steamer Wardrobe Trunk Excelsior Lock Early 1900's Original w/ Hangers
For Sale is a Wonderful Vintage Wardrobe Trunk from the Early 1900's. It is all original. There are 3 drawers on the right hand side to hold folded clothes. The left side is for hanging clothes. Included are 4 original wood hangers. 2 can hold pants plus a top/jacket/shirt/blouse/etc. and 2 are just for tops/shirts/dresses etc. There is also an adjustable bar that helps hold in the hanging clothes. Everything is original from the floral interior to the hardware and two leather handles. There is no key but keys are still available and can be purchased on the web. The lock is an Excelsior brand which dates the trunk to the early 1900's. Stamped on the lock is"USA. Excelsior Stanford, Conn#5987. The lock was loosened from one side of the trunk to allow it to be opened by a previous owner. It is, however, all there. The latches work ... moreand hold the trunk closed. One is a little hard to open. I sometimes use a screw driver to pop it open. This trunk stands 36 1/2 inches tall. Is 22 inches deep and 14 inches wide. The exterior is a forest green color with black trim on the corners and white pin stripes. The floral interior is green and peach colored. It does show signs of use. There is some staining on the drawers, and the hardware, probably brass plated, has age discoloration and/or oxidation. Kind of gives it character. There are many uses for trunks like this from being a guest room dresser to a coffee table. It could be refurbished or enjoyed as it is. The pictures show what you are bidding on. This is an absolutely gorgeous antique steamer trunk. As you can see in the photos the wood really accentuates the black color. The wood is beautiful. Much of the leather remains although both side straps have rotted away which is very common in a trunk of this age. The metal accents. Rivets and corner pieces are very ornate. This is a beautiful Victorian 1800'S Hump Back Trunk with alligator-skin patterned tin exterior covering. It is totally original. It is untouched, unmolested by refinishers or restorators, it has not be polished and has no replacement parts. Condition: Hinges are original and untampered. All of the hinges work fine. The trunk opens freely and shuts tightly. All of the wooden slates are in great condition. There is one wheel missing on the bottom and it still rolls nicely on three wheels. Vintage Black Metal Covered Steamer Excelsior Trunk
Vintage flat topped metal covered steamer Excelsior trunk. Has been kept inside a smoke and pet free home. Height: 22.5 inches width: 32 inches Depth: 19 inches Would make an excellent restoration project. While the paint is damaged and needs to be redone. There is minimal damage to the metal itself. The drawer lifts out easily. The drawer insert does require some repair. The damage would be easily remedied by re-papering. There is no key for the lock. I have seen keys for this particular Excelsior trunk lock. The code for the key is 5989. The hasps on either side of the lock work well. I have owned this trunk for close to 30 years. It was vintage. This dome top camel back steamer trunk circa 1800s has been beautifully restored outside. The interior remains as original. For 40 years at least this trunk has stored extra items in a guest bedroom. The great storage without smells or moisture will be missed. The approximate dimensions are: 30” length. 17” width, 24” height. This trunk has all the original hardware except that one latch is missing the bail. The lock fastens but needs a key. Up for auction is a beautiful large Victorian steamer trunk in original condition. This is a nice size for toys or linens or even a blanket chest. Measures 38" wide x 23" deep x 27" high. Beautiful details such as wood stripping. Brass locks, leather handles and a faux marble painted tin decoration on all sides. There are a couple of minor dents and the inner tray is missing but otherwise in very good condition. Someone could make a tray for this and repair the wood flap inside. Characteristics of Hartmann We are offering for sale an extremely RARE& UNIQUE fine stateroom steamer trunk. Came from an older Central Pennsylvania estate. Trunk has previous owners initials H L B. Exact age and origin unknown but believe to be from the early 1900s. 1877: Hartmann Inc. was founded in Milwaukee. Wisconsin by Bavarian Trunk maker, Joseph S. Hartmann. 1905: Mr. Hartmann had a vision to build"luggage so fine it will stand as a symbol of excellence. Because of his vision. The company grew rapidly and moved to larger facilities in Racine, Wisconsin. This trunk has early Hartmann trademark cloverleaf hardware. Pull out hanger is patented March 1905. This may be the only one is existence. VERY RARE Quality constructed. Trunk interior is fitted with American golden oak and cast brass ornate pulls with drop front hat box ... morearea that can be used as a desk. Exterior is fitted with rose and silver colored cloverleaf hardware(corners are cast iron and the rest of the hardware is nickel plated brass? which I believe the cloverleaf hardware was characteristic of early Hartmann. Canvas appears to have been a deep mahogany that has darkened over the years from the smoke of coal fired trains and ocean liners. Nice shaped edging of wild boar hide(pig skin) and fine brass tacking. The skin from a boar was tougher and thicker than other animals. Pull out hanger is patented March 1905. The latch is marked Everwear TTC3 and Corbin made in USA. Stately Travel Chest Wardrobe Trunk These early trunks are very rare and hard to find and are as good as. The Oshkosh Trunk Company's Wardrobe(Steamer) Trunks plus"How To Pack" pamphlet. Trunks are in good condition for a vintage piece. See pictures. All original drawers and hangers. Locks were busted off(not by me) But whole lock piece is attached. No paint or any other signs of an attempt to update the piece. Does not include key. There are two tags which have the Oshkosh logo(on each trunk) one of the trunks has a Kaufman's Fifth Avenue, Pittsburg logo, as well, both pieces have a dated postage note, date reads: Sept. 20, 1927. Large Storage Steamer Trunk,Travel Chest,Early 1900's Los Angeles pickup
Here is a vintage steamer trunk. Measures 39" long. 20" wide, 21" tall. Does not have a key. All parts are attached as shown in photo. Belonged to my grandmother who came to this country from Austria in 1910 so this trunk is at least 104 years old. Needs some restoration as shown in photos. Blue sides is some type of cloth material over wood. the bottom panel is metal as shown in photo. Hinges came loose and need to be attached. The wood shelf insert is cracked, but repairable. Beautiful Vintage Bassett Steamer Trunk
This is a beautiful vintage steamer trunk by Bassett. In great condition. Dimensions are approximately 20x23x39. Outside handles are intact. Minor scuffs on exterior. Interior is a gorgeous blue with original wooden clothes hangers. Thin suitcase attached at bottom for smaller items. Set of four drawers, one partitioned inside. Bottom drawer features a snap-in item that we believe is for potpourri, to keep the trunk smelling fresh(very cool addition that we haven't seen before) Metal bar slides up to prevent drawers from opening in transport. Smoke-free home. Picture shows masking tape marks that previous owner used to keep the outside lock from closing and locking. The tape and residue has since been removed. Beautiful Refinished Flat Top Steamer Antique Trunk w/Lock & Keys
Beautiful Refinished Antique Flat Top Trunk with Working Lock and 2 keys. This is a very nice. Clean refinished flat top steamer trunk from the late 1800's. To begin refinishing this particular trunk we had to take off the white paint from the inside. This is a very hard thing to do. With white being painted on the wood we sanded a lot and striped the paint off. There are a few white streaks on the inside but it doesn't stand out. The original pine wood is very beautiful now that the paint is off. We then removed the leather in between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath. This gorgeous trunk is made up of pine wood with oak slats. Once we removed the leather we sanded all the wood and then applied polyurethane by Minwax. On this trunk are two new Amish black leather handles and two new latches to keep the lid secure. Also ... moreon the lid we applied a new trunk stay to keep the lid open when wanted. We also attached a new lock with two working keys. The fancy metal hardware on this trunk has also been repainted by hand in black and gold leaf. As in any trunk of this age there are a few signs of wear but that is to be expected. The interior of the trunk is very clean. We have also applied polyurethane to the bottom to give it a new refinished look. The bottom also has the 4 original casters in excellent working condition to ease with moving your trunk. The size of this trunk is perfect for its use as a hope chest to keep all your precious belongings in. This beautiful trunk would look very nice placed at the foot of a bed. It could also be used by a college student to store things in. The size of this trunk measures 28" length x 15 1/2" width x 15height. The two of us love refinishing trunks bringing back the beauty into a piece from the past. Up for consideration is a small Victorian Doll Trunk. It has been cleaned well inside and out then a satin finish was applied for protection. The inside was tastefully recovered. The front lock works and to unlock you push down the keyhole button. Not in. But down. It has some minor stress cracks and dings& dents but this adds to its characture. Beautiful Fancy Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock& Key and Interior Tray Here is a really fancy beautiful refinished dome top steamer trunk from the late 1800's. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 30 1/2 inches. From floor to top is approximately 26 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 19 inches. This lovely hump back chest is made up of poplar and pine base wood with oak or ash outer slat boards. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. There are typical older distress marks on the wood which include older scratches and nicks in various places, although the chest is very sturdy and can be sat upon the top if you want to do so. This trunk maker put a lot of nice metal hardware on this trunk. The metal parts that make up this trunk ... moreare not brass, therefore we have hand painted the metal in black and gold leaf. This trunk also comes with the original patent dated working lock. This is the first time out of well over a thousand trunks that we have had this style of lock. It is patent dated on the key hole cover which is the only brass part on this trunk that we have semi polished. It reads, Pat Mar 69& Apr 77" There is a close up picture showing these dates. We did match up a key that does activate the lock mechanism. You can lock your belongings inside this beautiful trunk away from others. The front latches are original cast iron nice ones that still work since the springs are still intact. The side handles have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. Going to the interior, we have made a tray or insert for this trunk. It rests at the top edge where the original one once did. The interior wood and tray have received two coats of polyurethane. We did leave the fancy paper border in place on the underside of the dome and we added two nice trunk maker's style pictures to the underside of the dome. Considering how old this trunk is, the interior is in pretty good condition.

This vintage Army Foot Locker/Steamer Trunk belonged to an Army Physician. These were more of a trunk than a footlocker and were used primarily for military travel. This one has a quite interesting provenance provided by names and locations stenciled on the trunk. This trunk also provides the name of the Doctor's wife which will be helpful if you want to research this item. The outer layer of wood has some deterioration but. The trunk is very sturdy and in good condition though it does have scuffs. Dings and wear from normal use. This is not so much damage as character. It appears this was used by a college student in the early 1900's and has a college sticker and several old shipping labels. The trunk has the capacity for a tray insert but it is not present. This would make a great trunk to store blankets in or to use as a coffee table. The leather handles on both ends are broken. Steamer Trunk made by The Schmit Trunk Co. of Oshkosh. Wisconsin. Size is 22" x 22" x 42" Merchdised by Lauerman Bros. of Marinette, Wisconsin. Year made unknown. Color is blue outside and blue/white on inside. Has2 drawers and a hat box all intacted, closet side has the original clothes hangers. Outside has very few flaws, some scratches but no holes or large injuries to the trunks outside. Inside of Trunk looks weather worn but seems to have held together, we believe the water stains come being stored in a damp or humid place. This comes from an estate sale in Northern California. This trunk has all the oak slats on it over the canvas.I have yet to find another trunk with the canvas still in tact. Although I'm sure there are probably some out there. This trunk is in very good condition despite it's age. It's very large: 40" long, 27 1/2" tall, and 24 inches wide. It has three rollers in tact. This is from a nonsmoking home, with no musty smells whatsoever. Very clean, sweet smelling. No mold or mildew whatsoever. I am selling without including any shipping costs. Brand- LOUIS VUITTON 100% Authentic Style- RAYEE Steamer Trunk(Rayee is French For Striped) Country of Origin- FRANCE Date Range- Louis Vuitton started using the striped canvas in 1872 until 1888 and considering the Low Serial# I would say it was made in the early 1870's Historic Serial Number- Amazing Very Early# 6379 as seen on the Original Sticker which was Never removed for any reason. Note: In January 2013 a striped trunk very similar to this one(but in better original condition. Sold in the UK for $58 K, w/ serial#13502 Interior has been Stripped of the original Canvas interior Although Some Remnants Remain. Including a swatch of the exterior Stripe canvas used for the outside, And Most if not all of the"Tacks" used for the tufting in the lid are still present. The interior would be very easy to restore, but I decided ... morenot to alter or add to it. The flat inside slide hinges are original w/ no issues. There is no moisture damage or odors present. Exterior- Wood/ Black Leather Trim/ Brass Hardware.I believe this was a Higher end model at the time as the hardware is All Brass vs. Iron and it was trimmed in Leather. Obviously the Original Rayee striped canvas has bee removed. However nothing was removed in order to do so, as you can still see canvas remnants under the slats and around hardware. A light coat of lacquer was applied to bring out the beauty of and to protect the wood. I would not think this would be a negative issue if it were to be restore to the original look, as the canvas would cover most of the wood and steel wool could gently remove the rest. Or otherwise it is a Beautiful show piece as it sits or a wonderful candidate for restoration Condition- This Trunk is Structurally Solid and I believe all of the hardware is original. While the only thing I do not know for sure is the corner guards. As early as this was made they may have used these for a short time. They are however old and look completely appropriate.
