I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle loose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf unit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. The fold down writing surface is fully functional. It folds down and rests on the upper drawer which pulls out. Feel free to ask any questions if you need further description or clarification. Vintage. WW II Era submarine model, desk top presentation, made the submarine shipyard manufacturer, and given to John L. Sullivan(June 16, 1899- August 8, 1982) Assistant Secretary Of The Navy, and the first Department Of Defense Secretary Of The Navy in the Truman Administration, from September 18, 1947 to May 18, 1949(614 days of service) He was appointed to that position upon Secretary Forrestal's installation as the first Secretary Of Defense. He resigned in protest after the second Secretary Of Defense, Louis A Johnson, canceled the heavy aircraft carrier United States, Navy's first supercarrier. This event was part of an interservice conflict known as The Revolt of Admirals. This large size submarine model measures 16 3/4"L X 4"H X 1 1/2"W(sub itself, not including the base. Wood base measures 20 1/4" X ... more4" X 1" The silver metal, indent stamped name plate reads: HON. JOHN L. SULLIVAN SECRETARY OF THE NAVY" Magnet does stick to this metal name plate. A magnet does not stick to the sub. All five of the periscope& antena metal pieces are intact. Both metal propellers, one on each end side, are intact. These small metal pieces have light surface corosion from age. The base has dark green felt padding. This item is in good original condition for its vintage age, having only a few tiny loss of finish spots on the front side, and wear of finish to the wood base. Tack who was recovering in the Franklin County Hospital. Greenfield, Massachusetts. Ralph Austin Bard(1884-1975) was a Chicago financier who served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1942-1944, and as Under Secre tary from 194 4-1945. He is noted for a memorandum he wrote to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson in 1945 ur ging that Japan be given a war ning before the use of the atomic bomb on a Japanese city.
