Early 1800’s Fine English Rosewood Traveling Secretary, Brass Bound
This exceptional example of an early 1800’s finely made English rosewood& brass bound traveling secretary for a member of the English elite ruling classes was found in a lower middle class home in east central Illinois about 40 years ago. How it came down to this family we purchased this from we will never know. Overall its base measures 12 ¼” across by 9” tall by 7 ¾” deep; the lid of the chest itself measures 11 7/8” across by 7 1/8” deep by 8 ½” tall. The chest has its“original” finish. But it may have been“touched up” at some time. As to veneer condition: the lid’s is intact, as is the front’s except for a bit near the top edge of the base veneer near the inside screws of both lower strap hinges. The 2 ends have sustained the most veneer damage, one end moreso than the other: The photographs show the differing amounts ... moreof damage which we, of course, cannot account for. Nothing has“come loose” in the 40 years we’ve owned this lovely thing. The back’s veneer is excellent; the back of the lid, however, has always had 2 old“white” paint scuffs + a narrow long triangular sliver of veneer off one end of the lid’s back. There are cast brass decorative gothic“hinges” across the top& up the front of this case; each part measures about 6” they are ornately cut-out& end in a fleur de lis; each is fastened with four screws. On either end there is a similarly designed cast brass drop pulls. The“Bramah” lock on the outside had a key which is now missing. Inside the original leather with places for pens, a scissors, a ruler is present, but the raised portions of the leather are worn& the instruments are gone. The piano hinge for the lid is intact. The two brass recessed places in the lid for the hinges on the opposite sides only have one of their brass liners. The wood inside appears to be perhaps an oak or some other light wood. The lid folds back, the front part of the desk folds down& out& out again, thereby revealing a compartmentalized“desk” writing surface with a“hidden” compartme

Each letter is written from Assistant Secretary of State John Bassett Moore to his“boss, Secretary of State William Rufus Day. Each letter is boldly signed“J. B. Moore. Each letter is on paper of excellent rag content and in good condition except for two round“punch” holes along the top edge for original filing. The three letters are as follows: The first letter dated 31 August 1898. 1-page(5 x 8” to Judge William R. Day, Canton, Ohio, concerning an“invitation” from the Secretary of War. The letter is typed on a folded half-sheet of a full-size 8 x 10” page. The second typescript letter dated 1 September 1898. 1-page(8 x 10” to Judge Day concerns a copy of a memorandum(no longer present ... morewith this letter) left by Mr. Thiebaut, of the French Embassy. I am selling a very nice(and very large! antique secretary/desk/cabinet. This belonged to my husband's grandparents or great-grandparents. We believe it was made in the mid to late 1800s. We have other furniture of their's and we know that is when those were made. Therefore leading us to believe the same about this piece. We do not know for sure it's history- both of my in-laws passed away several years ago, so we cannot get the full history. This piece is in two sections: the top sits down in the bottom cabinet. The bottom section has two doors with two shelves inside that are great for storage. The top section has glass doors at the top, with three shelves inside. Under the glass doors are two door on the ends, with a pull down"desk" in the middle. There are small drawers and shelves inside that section. The dimensions ... moreare approximately 6 ft. 10 in. tall. 5 ft. wide, and 21 in. deep on the bottom. It has been well taken care of. We believe the finish is original. As no re-finishing was done to it while in my in-laws possession. Overall the piece is in excellent condition for it's age, with a few minor scratches. Local pick up only. ANTIQUE~ Gorgeous all wood Mitchell Lap Table. The top surface is 12”x18” as is the lower layer) with a pencil ledge that will also hold a book from rolling off the edge. With a gloss– shellac like finish. This shows no gloss loss, color loss, stain or chips. A beautiful Victorian style decal is applied to the surface and it has a lovely rose in the art. I note some light scuff. Truly a lovely piece. This was last used in a bed and breakfast setting at a Victorian Inn. I believe it quite fitting for that setting. I used it a number of times to hold a canvas for painting and holding music and reading.

This is a antique walnut fall front extra wide secretary desk. The wood is"bookmatched" it is the warmer color, my camera and lighting is off. some call it a"gentlemen's desk" made in London, has original still on it that says London. All original hardware. Beautiful patina, ready to use. Has nice pull down writing desk, place for pens or pencils, 15 cubbyholes inside to store cards, paper, pens, etc. large cabinet underneath to store books, computer, or files. The underneath inside of cabinet is painted, which I have read that this was done years ago to"keep spiders out" unsure of this, but very area beneath. It is a beautiful piece of furniture. One small flea bite where key is, normal wear for a piece of this age, but with age of desk, this is minor, most all antiques has normal scratches and few blemishes, ... moreit has a beautiful patina. It is a. Would make a great study desk. Has classic shaped bracket feet. Doors on bottom are bowed with original hardware, brass plate pulls, bottom graduated out. probably from early 1900's, would be perfect for dorm room also, has key to lock desk. also the wood on this secretary is"bookmatched" has"curved cubbyholes" on the ends inside of secretary, it is walnut. the"bowed graduated out" secretaries are hard to find, bracket feet are original. You're bidding on a rare complete 3 Volume set of"Woodrow Wilson And World Settlement" by Ray Stannard Baker. Published 1923 by Doubleday, Page& Company, New York. This is a detailed historical account of the World War I peace negotiations from the point of view of an insider. Baker, a well-known turn-of-the-century muckraking journalist, was a supporter of Woodrow Wilson for president in 1912 and developed a close personal friendship that gave him high level access. Baker served as Wilson's press secretary at the peace conference, and his access to Wilson and a wealth of primary material make this book a crucial reference point for anyone with a serious interest in the subject. Baker went on to become Wilson's personal biographer and wrote an 8-volume biography that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. First published ... morein late 1922. These do not appear to be first editions, but are 1923 early editions and the title appears to be in scarce supply, especially in its complete three volume state. The books have nice, elegant dark blue cloth hard covers with gilt title and author info in the spines, and gilt page tops. Each book is well illustrated with both halftone photographic illustrations and facsimiles of documents, letters and other materials of interest. Books are in overall good condition. Covers do exhibit some shelf wear, but retain their overall appeal. Bindings are solid with no split, separation or hinge cracking. There is some foxing around the portraits opposite the the title pages and some of the illustration plates within the volumes, otherwise the books are very clean inside with minimal age discoloration, minimal to no foxing or spotting and no marking. Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal. A nice and uncommon important historic set- please don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding.
