A very fine antique. Circa 1840, Empire plain mahogany boards, with some flame mahogany veneers, bookcase top secretary desk over two door cabinet. Two piece construction: the bookcase with three adjustable wood shelves, the interior with an old ivory paint finish. Both doors retain their original wavy glass, brass escutcheon, key and lock. The drop front desk has a felt writing surface, cubbyhole with two drawers and letter slots. The two bottom doors have a brass grill over dowel framed pink fabric, with brass escutcheon and lock. The compartment has a removable wood shelf. The furniture measures 7'2" 86" tall by 2'1" 25" wide by 22-1/2" deep, the bookcase shelves 10" deep. Original bronze pulls. The shaped and beveled mirror plus columns with Corinthian capitals are exquisite on this American made furniture. Fine detailing and the concave front are delightful. The rich deep finish is in extremely fine condition on curly birch with a mahogany stain and a few shrinkage separations from age for antique character. Interiors are genuine birdseye or curly maple. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. The hardware is a later addition.possibly and most probably changed if and when the figured mahogany veneer ... morewas added in the very early 1800's. The desk is supported by a bracket foot base. Secretary Desk and Chair - Made in Italy
This beautiful secretary desk was made in Italy and measures 34.5 inches wide. 34 inches high, 14.5 inches deep. The desk is complete with two large drawers. And small interior drawers in the top, and the key to lock the desk top. The finish is veneered and inlayed with multiple colors of wood. The finish shows some signs of checking and there are some wear marks on legs and edges but there are no missing pieces of veneer. I have uploaded a picker of the largest mark. The desk condition over all is in very good. The chair is 38.5 inches high and the seat measures 15 by 15 inches. The carved wood is in excellent condition as the upholstery. ANTIQUE SLANT TOP SECRETARY DESK DROP LEAF STYLE SERPENTINE SHAPE FRONT BALL& CLAW FEET This is from the 1940s. It is sturdy. Made of solid wood- some or most of which I believe is mahogany. The desk has a dark stain finish even though some of the photos came out lighter because of the lighting when I took photos. There are antique brass finish handles and hardware on the drawers- one handle is missing. The traditional drop leaf desk/tray and its mechanisms work without problems. The two front legs are ball and claw style- both have some of the finish chipped off of them. Overall, the desk is heavy duty and in sturdy condition with minor wear and tear. It has a drop front typical of a secretary desk. The lining on the inside writing surface needs a blotter or you could put a leather surface on it. There are cubbies and pigeon holes for items. Two small drawers are inside as well. The lock on the desk works and has a key. There are brass key hole trims on each drawer but they are only for decoration as there are no locks on the four drawers. The drawer pulls are typical of the Colonial Early American period. I have no idea how old this desk is as I bought it as an antique in the Boston area in the 1970's. It is a very heavy item so could be ash or some other fine wood. Up for your consideration today is this magnificent authentic antique secretary desk/curio cabinet. IT IS AN ORIGINAL LARKIN AND THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK IS STILL ATTACHED TO THE BACK. Please check out the photos carefully. The finish is wonderful with very little wear. The beveled mirror is original. The key still works to lock the glass curio door. it does not lock the desk drop leaf or drawer) All carvings are original. The only thing that I know to be changed is the glass shelving. My husband added the shelving. Whether you use this piece to display depression glass as I do, or as a book cabinet or antiques display cabinet it is always a conversation piece. I had a collection of antique ink wells so they were displayed behind the glass and I left the drop leaf down and had a well, antique quill pens an antique tea cup and saucer on the ... moredesk. This is a wonderful piece and will add charm to any room. Three things I must point out. There is a stain inside the drawer. I think it is an ink stain. It is not visible from the outside, only the inside of the drawer. There is a small mark on the shelf that may be a burn. I have taken a photo of the key next to the mark so you can gauge the size of this flaw. Lastly I have been told that there was a small 2 inch piece of wood that extended across the top of the book shelf side of the unit I don't know what it looked like but was told by an authority that it is missing. Until I was told it never looked like anything was missing. Whatever I have displayed on that shelf always looked wonderful. The glass door is original and has no flaws. THIS PIECE WAS MADE IN AMERICA BY LARKIN and has held its value. I own it for about 25 years but must sell everything as we are moving into a vary small space. Please check out my other antiques. Italian 1900 Antique Hand Crafted Oak Secretary Desk. This secretary desk was hand crafted in Italy around 1900 of solid oak. The old finish with some newer revarnishing preserves lots of antique character. Dings, wear and shrinkage separations from age. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. Wrought iron side handles are original. Brass hardware is old but not original. The lock on the dropfront does not work, the key is a handle only. Pull out arms support the lid. Inside are eight small drawers plus a locking compartment with inlaid banding and a star on the door. All drawers have hand cut dovetail joints on this historic European furniture. Every surface shows hand planing. Sides are single wide planks and the front has wooden pegs at the joints.
