In amazing original condition, this is a beautiful flame mahogany flip top empire secretary bookcase desk. Look ... moreat the flame mahogany that these cabinet makers used back before the Civil War, and it’s obvious that they were very talented. There is matched flame mahogany veneer across the hand-cut dovetail drawers and the flip down lid. It has the big, wide molded crown molded top, arched gallery center face with flame mahogany all over, and the individually paned doors with some of the original glass still in them, and the double shelf interior. There are two hand cut dovetail drawers underneath the glass doors, and it comes down into a base with a flip-top lid on which we have redone the felt with antique red. The three hand-cut dovetail drawers come down into a scrolled empire legged base. The glass has been replaced in two of the sections for sure, and maybe some other places. You can see some of the triangular points that holds the glass panes in. The cabinet is in great condition, with some wear marks on the sides, and they can be refinished easily. The overall size is 40 inches wide, 22 inches deep, 34 inches to the cabinet top, and 78 inches to the very top and comes apart in two sections. Antique high top desk/bookcase. The top and bottom come apart at base of glass door book case. This is a warm- toned walnut wood with burled walnut panels. My parents purchsed this as an antique in the 1950's from previous elderly owners- not antique store. They did not replace any of the hardware or the glass during the time they owned it and I believe these to be the original. But have no way of telling- glass has tiny bubbles, but I don't see a wave. The desk appears to be in good condition. The top of the desk pulls out for a writing surface. The writing surface is rough on top and some of the drawers have ink stains. as mentioned- this item has pretty much been left in original state. This is a very attractive and interesting piece. Love the compartments inside this 1920-1940 mahogany secretary desk bookcase! There are 3 shelves inside and the glass doors that have lovely fretwork. The 4 claw feet are vintage worn. The drawers form a really nice serpentine base. The drawers open and close easily and have their original hardware. The goose neck or swan neck arch pediment on top has a middle finial which we are re-attaching. When the desk is opened there are 6 sleeves. 3 serpentine drawers and one"secret compartment" behind the door in the middle. The outside of the drop down desktop is lighter in color than the rest of the piece and really adds a nice depth. The desk was loved and used; the wood is worn. Made mainly of solid mahogany wood. And with minimal veneer that is normal to the design of the age. Many photos are posted so that you can see the quality of this beautiful desk and how well the secretary has been cared for, being from only one owner. This desk is in excellent used condition being from the original owner. There are no repairs. But does have minor wear from use. This beautiful desk also has the original patina and has never been refinished. 1920's Antique Mission Solid Quartersawn Oak Folding Secretary Desk
On offer is a classic antique Mission or Arts&Crafts secretary desk. This desk was purchased for considerably more money in 2005. It is in need of some repair. Which could be done relative easily, but is nevertheless which is why I am asking much less than purchase price. The rear right leg is wobbly and needs reinforcement. I added a steel bracket on to stabilize it a few years ago, but it was neither an attractive nor particularly stable solution. Also the top does not close flush because the hinges have been attached incorrectly and need to be moved(as simple as drilling two new holes and puttying over the old ones) On the plus side, the quarter sawn oak is really beautiful, the tiger oak pattern is exactly what you'd want in this kind of piece.
