The elegant bookcase top is graced with beautiful crown moulding adorned with incised carved spade moulding. Two handsome horizontal raised burl panels are found above the gorgeous glass doors. For sale is a stunningly beautiful. Victorian-era secretary desk. This heirloom has been in the family for over a century and has been well taken care of. There are a just a few minor surface scratches that are typical for a desk of this age, but overall this desk is in excellent condition. Made of solid wood. This secretary was built with Old World craftsmanship. This antique desk stands 48" height x 28.5" width x 14" depth. The Victorian-era design features ornate, wood carved trim and a stylish brass crest on the slant top, drop front which opens to five letter cubby holes and just below are a small sliding drawer, two adjacent letter holders. Underneath the drop front is a larger, sliding drawer with two brass ring knobs. There are key holes on the drop front and the sliding drawer but we no longer have the key. This desk measures: Top glass front section: 26" tall x 10" deep x 31 wide. distance between the shelves is: 8" They are equal and are not movable. There are 2 shelves making 3 spaces for books, display items etc. The glass doors swing easily and there is a lock that works with a key( included) The left side has an inside clasp under the top shelf to keep it closed. There were at one time X shaped minions on the glass that still have a faint impression in the glass. May be removable-I never tried. Bottom Desk/drawer section: 39 1/2" tall x 16" deep x 31 1/2" wide. The drawers on the inside are 27 1/2" wide x 6 1/4" high x 13 1/4" deep. Each of the 3 drawers are the same size and all slide freely. Desk section: The swing down desk writing surface that closes to a slant measures 11 1/2" deep ... morex 30 1/4" wide. The hinges are sturdy. There are no underneath bars or braces. The remaining desk surface that is existing that goes in from the fold down section measures 15" deep. There are 2 small drawers. One on either side, the drawer inside dimensions are: 6" x 5 3/4" x 1 1/2" deep They both slide freely. Above each drawer are 2 upright letter sections each measuring 7" deep x 3" wide x 4 3/4" high. There is a flat section between the small drawer/letter sections that measures 9" x 7" deep x 9" wide. There is space on either side of this cubby section for taller ledgers, books etc. that measures 2 1/4" wide x 10" tall x 7" deep. This is a very practical and well laid out inside section for various storage. Still useful today for lots of desk type items. Total height is: 65 3/4" The pieces are connected and not easily separated. The desk overall is in very good condition. Even though it is quiet simple in design. The outside is finished off nicely. I purchased this secretary at an estate sale where I found out that someone decided to store their Henkel Harris in a barn. Not the best idea since this is the result. I lightly cleaned it up and used Howards Feed-N-Wax on it. The piece is structurally sound. It has a small piece of wood split from the foot. I have the piece and it will glue back easily. I will leave that to the new owner since the less wear and tear on the repair the better. The piece has finish issues on the desk interior and lower drawers. There are a couple deeper scratches on the drawer fronts. A brass pull is missing from the slide that supports the lid. There is tarnishing of the brass. The desk lid ... morehas some scratches. I have the key to the secretary. The secretary looks nice when standing back from it but the blemishes are noticeable upon closer examination. Keep in mind the pictures were taken outside where these blemishes are more visible. It is deeply discounted for these condition issues. I'm selling this beautiful antique secretary made of solid mahogany that I received from a gentleman who said it was in his family for 7 generations and was originally purchased in the Hudson River Valley in New York by his steamboat captain great-great-great-great-great grandfather in approximately 1800. It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. I believe it may have been made by the Valentine-Glascock Company or possibly Chautaugua as this was a common style they both made. When desk is down there is a unique storage place for paper. Pencils, and chalk above the desk. It folds down flat for storage, opens in an A-frame; desk is held closed with original wingnut. In great shape for an item that is over 75 years old; no damage except some tears to the paper scroll at the top and a tiny chip on one piece of wood that is hardly noticeable. Rare Satinwood Satin wood piece that wood grain matches from top to bottom. I cannot find another one even similar to compare this with. The wood grain on the drawers even matches when the front is down. It is dovetail and mortise and tenon construction and in ORIGINAL finish and not restored as it came from a late 1800s home. I have no idea of the maker or craftsman of the piece so if you can provide any additional information on this incredibly beautiful work of art. Please share it with me. Tiny dovetail joints and mahogany banding suggest that the master cabinetmaker was apprenticed in England before emigrating to America. The satiny finish is in excellent condition. Solid oak construction shows hand planing marks and square hand cut nail heads. Graduated drawers have chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetail joints. Antique Traveler's Folding Walnut Writing Desk/ Box/ Secretary* All Original This is a late 19th century portable. Or traveling, writing desk. It is 13 3/4" wide, 8 3/4" deep when closed, and 4" high closed. It is made of nicely figured walnut with brass reinforcements. Everything is completely original. The exterior finish has very fine crazing which is not obvious- you must view it at an acute angle in the light- and VERY few of the minor marks these things usually pick up over a century. There is no real damage or dings. I do not have the key. The hinges are completely solid. The interior wood finish is in nearly the same condition but has about a half dozen wear spots. The velvet pad is original. It is split across the boxe's hinge but I believe it may have been made that way- there in no fraying- and the tab to ... morelift the bottom section is missing. The only real problem is that the velvet, which acts as the hinge for the two compartment lids, is loose from the frame of the box's lid as seen in the fourth pic; this is easily repaired. The compartments are clean and include the original dust. There are two ink bottles- one with its original pewter collar and lid and the other is missing the pewter pieces. The lid for the pen/pencil compartment has ink spilled on it(seen in the pics) but this should clean off if you know how to do that. This unique. Handcrafted, solid cherry secretary folding top desk was given to me by my grandparents in the 1960s. My grandparents had it for many years. The carvings on the desk are unique as are the brass drawer pulls and hinges. It measures 36"W x 36"H x 19"D. It is in very good condition. There are four small drawers in the top of the desk, along with six small cubbies. There are one large drawer, two deep drawers and one cubby below the desk top. All drawers are working.
