This design by Charles and Ray Eames and their ... moremulti-talented staff was introduced by Herman Miller in 1956 and graces residences around the world. The first one was for friend and film director Billy Wilder. Who lost it in a fire many years later. The second one was in the Eames House in Pacific Palisades house until recently, but is now in storage awaiting restoration. A very recent example now sits in the living area. In 1958 Vitra acquired the production and distribution rights to the Eames furniture lines for Europe and the Middle East. This Vitra chair and ottoman was acquired by the original owners who were living and working in Switzerland in 1972. And kept in their home for nearly 40 years. I have owned this for the past three years and it has only been sat on a half dozen times since my acquisition. The shock mounts between the armrest and lower back seat panel have been replaced, as many of these chairs have needed this repair. The refined combination of Brazilian Rosewood and black leather is still impressive 57 years later after its initial introduction. The rosewood and leather are in remarkable condition and the pieces exemplify fine design and luxury. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a vintage Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman in excellent condition. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area and will deliver within 50 miles for a nominal fee. It originally had a little pillow with a cloth covering attached to the back and swung over to the front. It was thrown out many years ago. This is a very Unique Rosewood Lounge arm chair. Unknown origins. Appears to be a Charles Eames for Herman Miller prototype. Nice form and lines. Material has some overall wear no holes or tears. Base photographed is not included. I dont have the original base for this chair so it is sold as is. Chair without base measures 17 1/2" tall from bottom to top of back x 11" from bottom to top of arms. Seating area measures 19" deep x 21" wide and measures 25" from outer arm to outer arm. Very nicely preserved unrestored vintage chair. Some rubs in spots- but nothing really noticeable at all. Chair moves back into 2 reclining positions- see pics. When closed the flip out foot rest does not stay totally snug against the bottom of the chair- but does stay back in the position that you see it in. Might need some slight adjustment. It does hold in place nicely when your legs are on it and the chair is incredibly comfortable even for me and I am 6'2" Has original James tag on bottom. 28 inches wide x 15.5 high at seat front and 42 tall at back. Yellow Charles Eames LAX Shell Chair Orig. Label 1st Gen Rope Edge Herman Miller
1950 Charles Eames/ Herman Miller/ Zenith Products 1st Generation Rope-Edged. LAX Base, Shell Chair in Yellow. A fabulous collector/investment grade example of the famous"Rope-Edged" Eames Shell Chair with its original Lounge Height Armshell X-Base. Right out of the gate. These chairs were in the Museum of Modern Art! Only the earliest production run of the Shell Chair had the rope embedded edge. In order to provide a radius with the comfortable"hand feel" Charles required. After reworking the mold, subsequent prodution runs did without the rope. Today, collectors primarily seek the version with the rope, as these are the obvious"original" and have a very secure place in industrial design/art history. There are a couple of details to this example which may make it a bit extra interesting to the serious collector: ... moreThe(intact) early design red/white/black label. Later revised to the"checkerboard" label, and the handwritten"LAX" on the shell's underside. Both of these details are factory original, in unusually good condition, and relatively rare among the rope-edged shells. Based on these details. I theorize that this particular chair may have been one of the very first yellow examples sent back to Charles Eames, perhaps to be assembled for an early display of the new colors, though after some research, discussion and emails with former Eames/Herman Miller employees and other experts, this remains unproven. If one can prove that Charles himself wrote the"LAX" on the underside, that would very likely have quite a positive effect on the chair's value. This handwriting was done in black wax litho pencil, obviously prior to assembly, and from the handwriting examples I've seen, does strongly appear to match Charles' hand. Compare it with the hand scripted"zeeland michigan" on the Eames designed label for example. It is reported however, that assembly line employees were known to mark the bottoms on occasion to aid in fulfilling custom

LKX-1 HERMAN MILLER CHAIR WITH ALL LABELS AND ORIGINAL PARTS This Eames wire chair fits the characteristics of being made in 1952. One major indication of the age is the extremely rare lounge base. No other such base was featured since 1951-1952. The burlap is a brighter brown/orange hue which may also indicate that the chair is made with Alexander Girard fabric. Who started working for Herman Miller in 1952. Only early wire chairs have a burlap backing. This chair is manufactured at the original Eames' office at 901 Washington Boulevard. Venice, CA. MATERIAL: Charcoal Naugahyde- very similar to leather in quality Black welded wire Burlap Please consider the pictured material tag for more details CONDITION: Very Good The pad has very light imperfections. It is in exceptionally good shape with very little show of use. Some edge areas(front ... moreright) have dirt or lighter discoloration, there are two shallow dimples in the seat pad as pictured. The edges of the pad are a little flattened on the right side- this could also be the original form of the pad. A small white scuff is seen on the back edge which could be cleaned off with some care. The burlap in the back is in perfect condition. Black wire base has some areas which look more brown than black, however the base has no rust and this is either as manufactured or from very gentle wear. The vintage condition of this Eames chair can't get much better. D E S C R I P T I O N: An early"LCM" low lounge height chair by Charles and Ray Eames. Metal frame. Bentwood seat and back rest. The coin-shaped metal back rest connectors make this an early Evans production. Retains all four domes of silence foot glides. Gorgeous wood grain. One of the shock mounts under the seat has some separation but it's still tight in place. The two back rest shock mounts were replaced at some point by the previous owner, there is also a marker outline around the back shock mounts, the two screws are newer replacements, the back rest is a bit crooked. If you are looking for an original example of this extremely hard to find chair this one is comparable in condition to the example in the Vitra Design Museum. The chair is in useable condition and the different components can be re-configured in a verity of ways. The vinyl outer coating on the foam rollers shows it age as most vintage examples do. The rubber balls on the metal connectors show disintegration also common in original examples. This is the normal breakdown of these materials. The foam itself is still very flexible and the white plastic tubes are in excellent condition. Please view the many photographs for the best honest description of condition. The chair is overall complete although one or two of the rubber balls on the steel ... moreconnector pieces have completely disintegrated. Offering a beautiful vintage Mid Century Modern Herman Miller Eames shell chair of Naugahyde/vinyl and polypropylene or f iberglass with an aluminum four point base. The Naugahyde material is in burgundy or dark red. I don’t usually identify furniture or design colors. So perhaps the correct word to describe it is maroon or rust. Please see photos. The foam has not petrified or hardened with age…looks visually smooth. And smooth to the touch– there is some softness or give when you press down on the vinyl. Condition issues in this chair: Rubbing on the outside of the grey trim. Five narrow dark marks that seem to have been caused by some kind of rubbing(from storage? A 3” area behind the back where the trim is loosening. And would need to be restored. A few light scratches on the seat. Light purplish spots or stains on the middle and right ... morepanels of the Naugahyde side. Two tiny spots on the set panel. The fiberglass or polypropylene is dark grey with a broken line pattern. This is a vintage mid century modern white vinyl reclining lounge chair designed by George mulhauser for Plycraft. Mulhauser designed a variety of furniture pieces for Plycraft. And though some of his work is compared to the Eames lounge by herman miller; his work stands apart and has become some of the era defining pieces that are collectable today. Furthermore, Plycraft is no longer making furniture, and therefore mulhausers designs are more rarenthan the Eames lounge, which herman miller is still producing today. This chair is in excellent condition. The wood grain creates a beautiful pattern on the back and underside of the lounge. And the white vinyl upholstery is in very good condition. There are a few small marks of wear on the upper right side of the vinyl(please see pics for details of this) and some of the screws have been replaced ... moreover time, but other than this, the chair is in excellent vintage condition overall. Nice example of an early Eames Zenith Rope Edge shell chair. Displays very well. Solid. Stable and very usable. Appears to have had a refinish at some point. You can see the original graining and color on the back and underside. Seating surface refinished in a clear satin/flat sheen and possibly tinted to enhance the natural color. This is how I found it and have not attempted any further restoration. Original large diameter Zenith shockmounts. Vtg mid-century OTTOMAN/FOOTSTOOL for lounge chair possibly PLYCRAFT Eames era NO RESERVE! Offered for auction is this classic mid-century modern ottoman or footstool that originally came with a lounge chair. It looks like a Plycraft but may be by Selig or some other manufacturer of the era. It has a leather upholstery in a golden-brown color. A bent ply shell with walnut or teak veneer and a black painted edge, and four chrome legs. Dimensions are just over 21" long x 17.5" wide x 16" tall. Condition of the leather is good with some wear showing but no stains or holes, and it's still supple. The laminated wood shell has one spot of veneer loss at one corner(see photo. The chrome shows some dulling from age and there are a few minor spots of tarnish(see photo. Still a good looking piece, it is offered with NO RESERVE. Vintage Original Herman Miller Eames Fiberglass Shell Pedestal Chair Mustard
Used. Measures about 24" across x 30" high. Shell and upholstery are all still attached. I did not see rips or cracks in either. But I could have missed something. Seams on upholstery looks good. Main concern is that the upholstery does not sit down in the chair. I have no clue what caused this or if it can be fixed- I am not an upholstery expert. There are scratches. Stains, gouges, missing color, and so forth. This chair was well loved. On the front of seat there are two round circle were material is worn off- see pic 2. There are other places like this also, but I only captured this one. The black trim has the same use also as the aforementioned with scratches. Worn black gone, etc. The last 3 pictures give a good idea of what I was referencing with upholstery not sitting down in the chair- it is raised/crinkley. For auction are three original vintage Herman Miller armless shell chair seats without bases. The shells are black fiberglass with beige fabric. The fabric is stained. Dirty, and coming away from the foam, so they'd need to be reupholstered. The shells and rubber trim on all seats are in good condition. One of the threaded inserts to attach the base has popped out on one of them. But it is still inside the chair between the foam and the shell. These are later models where the metal threaded inserts are attached directly to the shell instead of embedded in the larger hard rubber shock mounts. Herman Miller Eames fiberglass Zenith Rope Edge Arm Chair w/ swivel base w/tag
The color for this original Herman Miller chair is"parchment" which is a light grayish white. The swivel base works very smoothly and freely. The shell is in excellent condition except for one spot center at the top(see picture) There is a 2" crack which has not grown in the past 2 years that I have used it as my desk chair. It is 31.5" tall by 25" wide and the seat is 16" off the ground. It has the original label on the bottom. I have it listed as"local pick up only" I am willing to discuss a shipping option. However. Original Eames fiberglass shell side chair. Manufactured by Herman Miller in the mid 1960s at Summit Plastics in Michigan. This excellent chair is in the rare contract color of light blue(coded LB in the old herman miller catalogues) The shell is in excellent condition and the fiberglass threads are wonderfully visible. The chair shows some wear along the edges. But there are no visible cracks on the chair. The chair could use a cleaning and sanding to remove some old dirt(which is visible throughout the chair) as seen in the photos. Will sell with or without the reproduction metal and walnut rocker.
