Antique Blanket Chest (wooden hinge) hand crafted, hand forged nails? 6 plank
I am not an expert in antique furniture and I will try to describe the little blanket chest to the best of my ability. The measurements are 31" X 16" X 17" The exterior of the piece show wear with nicks around the base. The top was originally a solid plank but has been repaired in the past to keep the plank from cracking more. What is so unique about this piece is the wooden hinge system it has. Clearly this piece was handcrafted. On the inside you can see the panel has been tooled maybe by hand? The pins and nails used(with the exception of the newer repairs) appear to be hand forged. The bottom is removable in two pieces not sure if the two pieces were originally joined together at one time. The piece has been oiled and no other attempts have been made to restore this. I do not know the date of this item nor do I know the ... moretype of wood used in making this chest. If anyone knows more about this piece I would love to find out more information. First off the photos are terrible and does not show the true color. So it will look much better in true life. This fine little chest is all hand made with a great paint decorated pattern. Shields. The box is pine and nailed together using square nails with a few round head that are later additions. I would date this box in the last quarter of the 19th century. It has some type of a side catch to keep the top from falling back when opened, one side is broke. The finish is all alligator and adds to the great look. Antique 18th Century Pennsylvania Red Painted Blanket Chest Made of pine. Features 6 board dovetail construction with beaded edge lid. Dovetail bracket feet which are slightly splayed and seen rarely. Appears to be original red paint which has been varnished over at one pint. Hinges are slightly loose and need some attention if you will be opening and closing the lid a lot. Top has a small split near the back edge and there is a bump on the front left beaded edging. Also has a water mark. No key for the lock. Has some mostly illegible writing inside top lid. Measures 26 1/2" wide x 18" deep x 23" high. A good solid chest with minimal damages and repairs. C. 1775-1800 Item# 130002EEP16 This is a well worn and nearly untouched American Pennsylvania Chippendale Blanket Chest over Two Drawers. The interior of the lid covered in a fine woven green textile embroidered lower right"A.M.M. 1779" Likewise, the bottom of the inside of the chest bears the very faint initials and date"A M M 1779" these difficult to capture accurately with the camera and hard to see also with the eye. The underside of the lid of the till is inscribed in pencil"Hannah Britton" in a script that would suggest a somewhat early inscription by someone who owned the chest at one point. Crafted entirely of tulip ... morepoplar. Each surface of the case is crafted of a single solid unjoined board painted with a heavily oxidized brown streaked paint. The dovetails that join the case stretch from the top to the bottom of each toe, the feet becoming an integral part of the form, these well preserved and fully original. The molding around the lid, the midsection and the base are applied in the same manner, each with tiny wooden pins hammered through at regular intervals. The pair of drawers both bear pairs of replaced hardware, these inserted into the same original holes, both locks appearing to be fully original. The drawer frame is dovetailed front and back, the bottom heavily chamfered into rabbets on either side and nailed at the back in the typical manner. The interior of the chest has a later stain. While the 18th Century blanket chest is a very prevalent form. These are regularly refinished and rarely retain the original oxidized surface- even fewer also retain numerous matched inscriptions, dated and with some prior ownership inscribed on the interior. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46 inches wide by 23 inches deep by 25 inches high. It has been passed down in my family for several generations. I can remember it always being in a guest bedroom in my grandparents home and they were art and antique collectors. I am in the process of downsizing and I have quite a few pieces to sell. I would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The paint is in good condition but there is some wear on the corners and edges. The interior is in pretty good shape. The boards are solid. Or Javanese Storage Trunk(or" Grobog" in Bahasa) To my knowledge. These were the most spectacular, titanic dovetailed chests made anywhere at any time. Each side of this chest is a single gigantic slab of Teak. Cut by hand from the giant Teak trees that once were plentiful in the region. This is the Real Deal, a now rare form, and a magnificent example. The work in this piece is astounding. Every incredibly wide board is hand-planed. Revealing the rich, dark ripple of the aged teak through the subtly faceted carving. The moldings are hand-planed into the boards. The magnificent dovetails seem almost large enough to be a log cabin, the carvings lovely and tasteful subtle coloration ... moreto the wood rich& warming. The iron work is tremendous, robust, aged, hand-forged& intense. And as was the tradition, it's on these really great, large, built-in solid teak wheels! The top slab measures an incredible nearly 25" wide by 36" long in a single slab. Overall height is about 36-1/2" There are two handy compartments inside. One the full height of the interior and one with space underneath. I've been a collector of dovetailed chests for many years& I've collected some absolute beauties. This one is about the most heroic single-slab six-board box I've seen. The Indonesian Grobog chests can be very ornately carved& painted with striking colors. Indonesia is known for its amazing tradition of woodworking and crafts. I like that this one is much more simple& plain than most. And that the aged wood is allowed to be the most prominent surface. Indonesian chests like this are getting very rare. There was a time back in the 1990's when great containers of Indonesian Antiques were being shipped over. This beautiful PENNSYLVANIA blanket chest belonged to my great uncle. He was a huge collector of antiques! My husband and I love this piece. But we are such huge collectors ourselves we simply do not have the room for it anymore. I tried to find out the how, when and where of this piece, but was only able to get a little info. My grandfather(his brother) said he had it in his collection since he was married, so that was between 1930-1940. He loved estate sales and auctions, so I am assuming that is where he first purchased it. He pretty much didn't travel at all, so I would bet this came from an estate around 1930-1940 and in the area of Somerset, Westmoreland, Fayette or Bedford county PA. The hinges, while old, are replacements; the lock we believe is original. There is significant damage/loss to the bun feet. Lots of dings, scratches, wear and tear. We purchased this beautiful old blanket chest at an estate sale(Centennial Farm. Jackson County) in Brooklyn, Michigan from the family. The chest is all original just like we bought it. The chest has the original blue paint and is made of all pine wood. The hinges are good as well as the lock(no key)see last picture of lock) The chest is hand planed(see pic.11) with a one board top, front, sides and bottom. The feet are separate pieces from the other boards. The measurements are 43 1/4" wide, 17 1/4" deep and 22 3/4" high(tall) There are 2 names on the boards as you can see in the pictures. One is Sidney McKee? and the other is L.G. Picket. I think I looked at them several times. If anyone can identify the names better please do so. Beautiful Antique German Pennsylvania Hand Painted Trunk Chest For sale is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The painting appears to be on top of a gesso or tempera of sorts. The flower painting is very nice and in pretty good shape on the sides but worn on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches deep by 23.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of age because it is very old. I am not certain but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The iron hinges could use a little straightening. There are square ... moreand round nails holding it together. Some of the nails for the hinges have been replaced with screws. The paint is cracked and peeling and missing and dirty. The interior of the trunk shows mostly red. The lid has a label and a picture of cupids. The label in in German but I don't think it has anything to do with the origin or maker of the trunk. There is a small lidded storage compartment on the left side. The ball feet appear to be correct. One toward the back shows deterioration. There are some random areas that show past termite activity or worm holes. I am not sure. The boards are solid. Though. This trunk was just removed from a Los Angeles storage unit and needs a very thorough cleaning. I am not an expert on such pieces and welcome any details people might be able to add. An 1800s elm blanket box/ chest. Wonderfull colour/ patina and elm grain detail. Hand forged iron lid hinges. Recently wax polished so all ready for the home. Fully treated throughout and guaranteed for woodworm as the chest had suffered in the past as seen in the pictures, some areas around the top edges to the interior are filled, its very common for elm to be attacked by worm. Antique travel chest blanket box steamer trunk vintage wooden banded victorian
An old original fab steamer chest with lots of metal banding and end cap brackets. It is a original steamer chest from circa 1900's and would have been used on the ships of old Metal handles at each side. Front locks and clasps there is no longer any key for the middle lock long gone. Four hardwood slats on top with one at the front and back also. It is approx. half the height of the standard ones. So would be great for any room in the house to make a great look and not take up to much space. The chest has a nice shiny bri wax finish. It has been around for a hundred years and will come with wear and tear as you would expect which all adds character to these items, But is still a strong fab little chest. VINTAGE 1927 LANE URBAN STYLE CEDAR BLANKET CHEST
This early cedar chest has the trendy look of today’s home furnishing looks. The simple lines. Careful detailing and hand-rubbed, distressed black finish are so in today that it’s virtually a prototype of newly manufactured trunks with vintage styling. The piece has original papers, along with the embossed signature dating it back to 1927 by well known American cedar chest company Lane of Virginia. The outside has classic carving, with lovely detail around the keyhole. Inside, it’s made of beautiful cedar, which is in great condition. The trunk is sturdy and the cedar is fresh and perfect inside. There is a chip on the back of the lid(see pix) and someone has used new screws on the hinges. The grain painting is in good condition with a few missing spots on the lid(see pix) There are no splits in the wood. All original feet and it has lock but no key. It is very sound structurally. MEASUREMENTS: 37 1/2" wide x 27 1/2" tall x 19" deep. The front and side planks are 21 1/2" one plank. Lid is 17 1/2" one plank and so is the back with one added plank. the drawer is cut from the front plank) Item offered is a great antique one plank grain painted blanket chest with one drawer and on turned feet. It is pine construction with a yellow gold quarter ... moresawn oak grain painting effect. The drawer has wood pulls. Except for the back all three sides and lid are one wide pine plank.
