They are distinguished by either their flat or slightly-curved tops and were usually covered in canvas, leather or patterned paper and about 14 inches tall to accommodate steamship luggage regulations. There has been much debate and discourse on what these types of trunks are actually called. In some old catalogs, these trunks were called"packers" and the"steamer" trunk actually referred to a trunk that is often called a cabin trunk. An orthodox name for this type of trunk would be a"packer" trunk, but since it has been widely called a steamer for so long, it is now a hallmark of this style. There is a sticker on the top of the trunk that indicates that this trunk traveled on the Grace Line SS Cecilia sailing to New York. The Santa Cecilia was built in 1913 by William Cramp and Sons. Philadelphia. PA. She was acquired by the US Navy in March of 1919. In 1935 she was decomissioned and broken up so this trunk had to have been used sometime before then. It had been leather covered ... morewhen new, because I can see the evidence of the leather in several places. Picture#11 shows the leather still remaining at the top edge of the chest. The dimensions are: Length- 19" Height- 14" Depth- 9" This is the wood box dimension, without adding for the hardware. The lock and latches are Eagle Lock Co. Terryville,CT. There is no key. The handle has to be the original leather covered one and the leather is not in good shape, but it certainly fits with the age of the chest. All of the latches, hinges and lock are complete and work fine, except for the missing key. For those of you who know more about this. I'm sure you can identify the brand from the drawer knobs and diamond shaped back plates on them. I'm sure it has been sanded and finished, probably at the time the leather was removed. Although the wood surface probably wasn't original, it looks like pine to me, and looks nice with the varnished surface. Please email me with any questions you might have. It is in more or less perfect condition now. It is ... morefinished in a medium oak color with minwax provential stain. Finished with several coats of Sherwin Williams sand& sealer and two coats of Sherwin Williams top coat water proof lacquer. The entire piece of furniture has been sprayed and sealed good, including drawer bottoms, back and bottom of the piece. The solid brass has been cleaned and lightly polished with jewelers rough. The finish is hand-rubbed and it looks like it has just be waxed. The bevel mirror is original, has some distortation because of age. The towel bar including the bar itself is all original. The base comes apart from the towel bar and mirror for easy transport. As you can see the back looks just about as good as the front. Be sure to check out the paneled sides, carvings, hardware, it has everything. The price is right too so if you are in the market for an investment quality washstand, here it is.
