The top has the most lovely design of flowers and outlining in coloured and textured pyrography- where the wood was decorated with hot tools to produce a raised and textured effect. This box has a rather Art Nouveau look to it. The box has a little drilled hole in the side of the base. Through which fine string or ribbon can be threaded and then pulled out beneath the top, but it can also be used as a standard box for holding paperclips or small items on a desk or dressing table. The item is nicely made and has an old paper label underneath which reads"Au Printemps" So I think this was orignally sold in France. Condition is overall very good. Ut there is some wear to the green varnished areas in the top design- but this is still a lovely and rare piece. If used as a string box. I feel this would be best suited to thin string, thread or twine, as shown in the picture- and will be included with the box- rather than thick string. Condition: Used Location: Novato, United States I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite ... morelike it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. Every surface shows hand planing marks on this classic and functional furniture. The beautifully figured one-board drop front rests on pull out supports. Lock and key work. Inside are tiny drawers with exquisite dovetail joints and compartments for papers- old India ink stains show this was a working desk. The desk was originally a slant front desk but someone somewhere along the line decided to modify it with ships so that the writing surface was flat. This is a very solid and heavy piece of furniture with the boards used to construct it being 3/4 of an inch thick of solid oak and the legs are up to an 1 1/2 thick of solid oak. The styling and heavy construction lead me to believe this is quite old. I would estimate 1880's. The paint is a newer modification though i am not sure when it was done. Judging from the age of the modification to make the desk flat I would estimate 1930's or 40's. The desk is in very good condition but it does have some wear and damage. ... moreThere are some chips in the paint along one edge where the modifications are and there is a chip in the right foot but it has long been painted over. French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour Antique Writing Desk France c. 1890-1910. Mahogany Veneers with Brass Stringer Inlay Cylindrical Top Desk with Mechanical Movement Item# 120012OWP03 This is a simply gorgeous French Louis XVI style Bonheur Du Jour Cylinder Top Antique Desk. A wonderful visual accomplishment. This desk revives the Napoleonic tastes of the late 18th Century, in every way capturing the Neoclassical taste for clean lines and stoic structure juxtaposed with lavish ornamentation. Mounted with precisely executed brass and bronze hardware and embellishments, the desk is mutually reserved and royal. Crafted almost entirely by hand, this is a stunning and highly complex work, using gorgeous mahogany veneers to cover all visible surfaces of the desk. The cylinder top has an interesting mechanism whereby the opening of the lower ... moredrawer opens the roll top. Once the cylinder top is opened. The desk lid is accessible, now easily opened to lay supported on the open drawer- this reveals an original tooled black and gilt leather writing surface, three small hand dovetailed drawers, a pen rest flanked by inkwell cubbies and a storage space inside. Resting over that are three larger drawers. Again each hand dovetailed with solid mahogany secondary woods, the bottom of each drawer chamfered along the sides to rabbet into the frame and nailed at the back with tiny nails. A curious inscription on the pine beneath the middle top drawer is a possible attribution to it's maker, an upside-down V with an S scrolled inside- the same inscription appears in very large proportions on the backboard as viewed by removing the top drawers and peering back into the antique french desk. The interior is inscrutable unfortunately. Much of it being locked up with the dust boards, roll top and lower drawer that is not removable. Each drawer is framed in brass tubular molding around the gilt bronze drawer hardware. The top is a piece of mottled red and cream marble. The desk has 1 center drawer and it has dovetail craftsmanship with a brass pull. The legs are very curvy and come together to form a butterfly shape. The stretcher runs across the width of the table and is very curvy as well. Meeting the center of the legs on each side. The wood does show some signs of age and wear but this just adds to the character and patina of the entire set. The back upper corner has a small chunk missing but you cant even see it with the marbel top on. See pictures below. This is a very nice set, it is antique and will not be perfect. I do not know who the maker is or the exact date it was made. The mirror measures 46 ¼ inches tall, 25 3/8 inches side to side and 3 11/16 inches front to back. It weighs 20 pounds. 16th Century Antique Colonial Guatemala Desk Bureau
Hello and thanks for looking at my item! Up for auction is an amazingly well conserved ladies desk circa early 16th Century. The wood is in amazing condition. No chips or woodworm. It still conserves it´s original gold paint and it is made of three pieces, the stand or leg supports, the main body which consists of four large drawers that open and a 5th small one on top, the folding top that reaveals the inside and its two supports that slide out from the main body. The top part has glass shelve supports and an open glass and wood door. This is hand painted and has it´s originall paint of a woman and a country home and vegetation. On the sides there are paintings of a bird that seems to be a parrot and on the other side of some flowers. It has it´s originall hinges on the folding top but one is broken(it can be easily fixed ... morebut I did not want to disturb this item in any way) There is some very interesting history behind this. It belonged to Doña Beatriz de la Cueva, the wife of Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado who governed Guatemala. When he passed away his wife, Doña Beatriz was the first woman gorvernor in Latin America. She passed away in Antigua Guatemala when the water volcano flooded the whole ciy. This desk was purchased by my great grandfather more around 1915. We was a wealthy diplomat and coffee plantation owner living in Guatemala. He had in that time the largest privately owned museum in Guatemala and this was one of his prize possesions due to the importance of it´s history. This is a piece of history that´s almost 500 years old and still conserves its original paint and gold applique! It is truly museum quality! RARE 1800's Spinet Desk with Crocodile Vinyl Top. Also known as a Piano Desk. This spinet desk is from around the late 1800's, I think. I am not sure if it's cherry or mahogany. Newly refinished and topped with a crocodile vinyl and nickel plated studs. Tapered legs have nice detail. Legs remove, for economical shipping, or easy pick up. All wood ornamentation is in tact and beautiful. Does have a few gouges here and there, that have been darkened, which makes them much harder to see, looks more like a distressed look, but with minor distress. There is also a larger gouge in in the very edged at the front top, see pictures. Work surface has 2 recessed finger pulls. Work surface pulls out to 15" deep(front to back) and 24 1/4" wide. And is 27 1/4" off floor. Bi fold top gives you access to the interior and work surface. ... moreInterior has 6 cubbies. Exterior has 2 drawers. That is one on each side and 1 wide drawer across front. All drawers and lid operate smoothly. The entire desk measures: 38" wide. 18 1/2" deep(front to back) and is 32 1/2" tall when closed. Drawer measurements: 2 drawers. 1 at each side measure 16 1/4" front to back, 4" wide and 4 1/2" deep. 1 wide drawer across bottom front measures: 28 3/4" wide. 15 1/4" front to back and 1 1/2" deep. Has wood ornamentation on front, so it makes it look like a secret drawer. CHAIR: The chair seems to have the same legs. So I think it is a match. Chair measures 28 1/2" tall at back. Antique Double Desk Great piece. There are markings I am guessing are from the maker. It is written in Black Ink on the underside of the left side desk lid. I believe it says in Fancy Script lettering"B.C.C Sept 21. 1914" on the first line. Then right below it in different handwritting it says"John M Lidden Jr. n.v. a m. 1915" Picture is included of the writing. Square nails are used in the construction with some flat screws and round screws which look like they were added sometime after initial construction. Lots of Layers give the piece its dimension and finishing. Corner moldings for decoration on each corner are still in good shape. I believe it is early 1900's. But cannot guarantee it. Desk is VERY sturdy. You could dance on its top. You can see from the pictures there is some wear. Some of the circles on the ... moredecorative molding at the top are missing and there is the burn mark from an old steel iron on the top of one side of the desk. Antique School Master's Desk
This is a very handsome hardwood school master's desk from the 1870-1890 era. It has wear that might be expected with its age to the finish. But nothing obvious and it is ready for display. The desk is solid and all parts function as expected. I believe that it is made of cherry, but no guarantees. There are 3 interior drawers and all have tight, skillfully made dovetail joints. The dimensions are 39 1/2" high at the back of the desk, 23" deep and 33" wide.
