Jin/Yuan dynasty(12-14 th centuries) Chinese stoneware Ewer. Hebei-Henan(cizhou) Black floral sprays on a white ground. Creamy stoneware. Coated with ... morewhite slip and with painted decoration over transparent glaze. Hebei-Henan(cizhou wares) Height: 2.75 inches = 66 mm Weight: 90 g Condition: overall very good condition. A 25-mm chip on the upper rim, good news– there are no cracks! In 1918 A.D. Some villagers from Julu(巨鹿) in Hebei discovered some ancient ceramics while digging a well during a drought spell. Antique dealers in Beijing got wind of the findings and the ceramics were subsequently brought to Beijing. It did not attract the interest of Chinese collectors as they were deemed to be unrefined and coarse folk kiln wares. The pieces were however snapped up eagerly by foreign antique dealers. Over the period from 1918 to 1919. Many more pieces were recovered in Julu and sent to Beijing antique market. It was estimated at least half of them were now in Japan. In 1920. Tianjin Museum sent a team to Julu to carry out investigation. They recovered a stone tablet entitled' 三明寺妙音殿 记" which mentioned a davastating flood that engulfed Julu in the second year of Northern Song Daguan( 大 观) The artifacts recovered were all buried during this 1108 A.D flood. In fact. The team also discovered some residential sites which showed how some of those artifacts were actually displayed then. The artifacts recovered by the team were subsequently published in a book called" 巨鹿宋器 丛录“ Ie a record of Julu Song wares. Among the vessels. There were some with inscription in ink such as a white glaze washer and a brown glaze box, both with a date of Daguan second year, and a carved/incised motif pillow with date of Chongning" 崇宁“ seventh year(1092 A.D) References: 1) Chinese Ceramics. click images for enlargement(further images below) We offer this superb medieval signet ring. Dating to the 14th century AD. The device is deeply cut ... moreinto the round bezel, in the form of a Lombardic letter"R" or"I.R" Around the letters are sprigs of holly or thistle leaves. This ring would date to the late 14th century- early 15th century when this type of lettering was fashionable, latter signets are engraved with black-letter script during the 15th- 16th century. The round border is decorated in a similar fashion to signet rings of the same period- notably bearing devices such as the crowned stag of King Richard II and the falcon in fetterlock. This ring would have been fully mercurial gold gilded. Though as it was worn for a long time(and buried for six hundred years) it was mostly worn off. What is nice is the gold gilding remains within the seal, giving a wonderful contrast to the design. Signet rings were rarely decorated. Being a utilitarian piece of jewellery that was used almost everyday, for sealing business transactions. Such a ring may have once been owned by a royal servant or alderman, though more likely by a merchant. This is a large finger ring, almost certainly worn over a glove. The gold gilding would have made this ring appear to be of solid gold, so an impressive status symbol to be seen wearing! Today this ring can still be worn and used. Especially if your initials are I.R. OBJECT: Signet Ring CULTURE: Medieval DATE: c. 14th- 15th Century AD MATERIAL: Gold-gilded Bronze RING SIZE: 12 1/2(US) Z(UK) SIZE: 27mm x 26.6mm x 14mm(bezel 14mm dia) WEIGHT: 12.3g This item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
