Early Heatons Wooden Starback Reel. 4". Named
I have for sale a 4" named Reuben Heaton Wooden Fishing Reel with a brass Starback. The starback has the ratchet switch mounted on it. the ratchet operates smoothly and efficiently. i would guess bthat the reel is made of Walnut. It is unusual to find a reel bearing the Heaton name. Even more so when you consider the huge number of reels they made. On this occassion the name can be found on the stem leading to the reel seat. The winding handles are made of some man made material and as you can see from picture 4. The Mice have taking a liking for it and both have been nibbled. Picture 5 shows the inrerior and the two lead inserts used to balance the spin of the drum. You have probably seen hundreds of reels in this format but this one stands out from the crowb because of that name stamped on the foot.

Superb Improved Wooden Starback Reel. Heaton Latch. 4"
There is no makers name on the reel but there is little doubt it was made by an accomplished manufacturer. the attention to detail is excellent. It could have been made by Heatons. Smith& Wall or perhaps Allcocks. The reel measures 4" in diameter and the spool has a 1" gape. Rim to rim. It measures 1 7/8" This is a starback reel and has an on/off ratchet switch located on one arm of the starback. The ratchet is strong and it operates efficiently. I have called this reel the Improved model because it incorporates virtually all the devises emplyed to maintain its efficiency. Wooden reels were by the nature of the material use susceptible to warping. Especially when the wood get wet or is left to bake in the Sun. the star back was in itself a form of bracing to prevent warp across the grain. The next feature is a lining inside ... morethe rim of the back plate. originally these were brass. The brass was later replaced with aluminium, a lighter material. Then came the an metal backplate to the spool. Again, brass was used originally but was replaced with aluminium, again for lightness. The reel had a caged drum, the outer rim of which sat in a recess on the inside of the wooden spool. The spool locks onto the spindle using a 4 screw Heaton style latch. It has finely turned horn handles. The ratchet cog and the pawl are made of similar tempered steel. The pawl spring appears to be aluminium. An additional feature of this reel is that the stabilising guide on the ratchet switch. This ensures the pawl engages correctly with the cog rather than slipping to the side. This reel is a cracker and is a first class example of its type. It also works very well so would suit the person who likes to use old tackle as well as being a collectable.

Vintage Fishing Trap Up for sale is a vintage wooden fishing trap. We have no way of determining exactly how old this item is. It is cylindrical in shape with a small opening that a fish swims into and then cannot get out of. After that opening is another small opening. The last step of the trap is the storage chamber. A door is normally used to cover this but our trap is missing the door. The trap measures 61" long with a 15 3/4" diameter. The wood is in good shape overall with some mild darkening near the main opening of the trap and a two small cracks in the wood. The trap is still structurally sound and is very sturdy. WOODEN GREENWING TEAL DRAKE
This is a(Wooden) Greenwing Teal drake. He measures about 10 inches in length. And about 3 1/2 inches wide. It was carved by Stoney Point Decoys, in Oak Hall, Va. and painted by me, Shirley Hearne. I worked at S toney Point decoys for about 16 yrs. Loved it and the people there. They closed their doors in 2003. The decoy has glass eyes. I've had him on a shelf for a long time.
