PRE-COLUMBIAN CERAMIC PIECE Tumaco Colombia
This is a reproduction of an original piece from the Tumaco culture. Which flourished between 500 BC and about 500 AD in what is the Pacific coastal area of southwestern Colombia. This piece represents the head of an Indian woman, intentionally separated from the body as part of a funeral rite. The ceremony had the implicit connotation, that when a human being dies, so does his control of thoughts and the mind. The artistic expression in these figures is realistic, keeping individual physical features, and becoming a living portrait. This particular woman wears a delicate headpiece, her large earrings in flower shape symbolize her capacity to'listen to others' and in her nose a beautiful gold'nariguera' that was used as a constant reminder of'el peso de la palabra' or the weight of our words, and the responsibility ... moreto use them wisely. The shape of the head, considered a trait of beauty, reveals the custom in this group of binding and molding the form of the skull while young. Little is known about these cultures that occupied the area in and near Colombia. The Tumaco and Tolita groups lived on what is today the Colombia/Ecuador border. And their civilizations flourished and faded from 500 BC to about 500 AD. As other groups from Colombia, they were excellent goldsmiths and ceramists, the pieces that have survived are of extraordinary beauty, and interesting in their diferences from other groups. Pieces are characteristically peaceful and serene in expression, and colors are a softer gray, due to the ash content of the clay in that region. As always, because of the abundance of gold in the area, once the Spaniards arrived, whole groups were wiped out to loot the treasures. This group's high point was long before this arrival, but much was lost from burial grounds that could have given clues to their existence. The legend of El Dorado fueled more and more exploration. Even today, burial grounds can be discovered and pillaged, leaving little to study. Ceramics that remain today are from t

Rare Pre Columbian "Patojo" Pot - Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, c.800 AD - 1200 AD
Patojo Pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua-Nicaro Culture 800-1200 A.D Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a rare"patojo" pot from Ometepe Island. Nicaragua and made around 1000 years ago by the Nicaro culture(a branch of the Greater Nicoya Culture) Ometepe Island is located in Lake Nicaragua and it's name means two volcanoes. This is an interesting and rare piece of pre-Columbian pottery that it is decorated in the form of a guinea pig with eyes on either side and a snout at the tip of the pot. A"patojo" pot is called this because it is commonly made in the shape of a shoe, which is pronounced"patojo" in Spanish. These were made by pre-Columbian cultures all over the Americas and the reason for this is that these pots allowed the user to dip into the warm contents from the pot while the ... moreelongated end of the pot rested in a classic"comal" style oven. This anthropomorphic vessel has marks that represent the hair on the animal and that change at the tip to fit the face of the creature. This pot measures 6 3/4" X 4 3/4" with a height of 4" and the mouth of this pot is 3" wide. This piece has only got ships to the flared rim which still has red pigment on the top and seems to have black pigment on the underside. On the bottom of this piece the hash marks stop and on it are a collector's numbers. International buyers pay full cost of shipping. Whatever that might be. Please see my other auctions for more artifacts. Thanks for Looking!
