I only collect things I like for their esthetic qualities, so I have relied on ... moresome of the top minds in the field of ancient Japanese swords and fittings for assistance in identifying the age of this tsuba. The consensus from the experts is one of 2 things: 1. It is an ancient tsuba that someone has over-cleaned and therefore accurate dating is difficult. or 2. It's what they call an"utushi" or old replica of a once famous tsuba that has been lost to the ages. All agree that it is a finely made Japanese tsuba. The only question is how old is it? The dimensions: 8.21 cm x 8.23 cm x 2.5 mm Made of copper or bronze- called"ko-kinko" Dimensions. Decorations, and style suggest ancient age. It feels old, looks old, and even smells old however. Most who have seen this tsuba error on the side of caution and consider that this tsuba likely dates to be at least 100+ years. But everyone who has looked at this tsuba cannot seem to come to a consensus overall. However. If it is indeed ancient, it could be several hundred years old. If it could ever be proven to be several hundred years old, this tsuba could be worth many. Many 1000's more than what I am asking. However. The only way to find out(as I'm told) is to have it appraised in Japan by the NBTHK, and this costs money and time to do- of which I have neither at this time. Some believe that the plate is ancient but the hitsuana were cut later, and then the decorations added at that time, during the Nambukucho/Muromachi period when such decorations were in style. Therefore. If you are the buyer of this tsuba, you may indeed have a genuine sleeper on your hands. But, at the very least, you will have a truly unique and one of a kind tsuba that would be hard to replicate. And would probably cost more than I'm asking to replicate it, and you would have a very fine example of a representation of an early tsuba, one that would certainly be a centerpiece in any collection-
