Measuring 4-1/2" tall, circumference around the widest part is 12" traditional form, with pierced brass"stopper" that fits snugly onto the base, the lid also fits snugly, with floral cherry blossom& butterfly motif on a beaut iful light blue ground. The lid has floral& bird motif on intricate 2-tone brown cloisonne ground, the interior and base are enameled in blue, the en amel is not smooth but is rather a thick textured finish. Condition: very good overall, there is just a teeny tiny 1/4" hairlines to the blue ground near the top of the 2- tone brown border. It is ac tually visible in photo#1. The best I can tell they were made in 1873 from.833 silver by AK 47. The lion stamp has a#2 at the bottom of it. The minerva and the letter O are also stamped into the spoons. Apprenticed under Edward Farnell in 1719. Newton in turn trained Samuel Taylor in 1736. These three London makers each represent perhaps the most important caddy specialist in their successive generations. The very first silver tea caddies were octagonal. With sliding doors for filling at shoulder c1715. The next were oval. Of these. Very few were made with sliding doors to base, such as this. Waldron illustrates a near identical c1730 example page 304. It displays beautifully engraved family coat of arms. A shield framing boar's with Maltese cross. And inverted crown. Opposite ... moreside spread wing bird of prey with bells attached above claw. This c1730 caddy with what appears to be period chased shell and floral garland decoration to both cover and base. Well fit urn finial domed cover. This museum worthy c1730 caddy is 5 1/4 inches tall. Exceptionally thick heavy guage sterling it weighs 8 1/2(standard) ounces. Hallmarked as shown. Maker"IN" in heart shape cartouche. See plate 1544 Grimwade. No date mark. The marks indicate the caddy was a duty dodger. Briefly. To avoid the tax some shops did not mark, or partially marked their silver. This was widespread. Even Lamerie, one of the most important makers of all time, produced a good deal of unmarked silver. Gadrooned upper rim, knopped hinged lid and stands on four ball feet fabulous quality.
