Beautiful Pair of Satsuma Vases, Mark # 875
Beautiful pair of Kinkozan Satsuma vases. They are 7 1/2" in height and are a yellowish earthenware decorated with a minute decoration of Japanese figures which have expressive faces with detailed oriental landscape. Raised moriage finish on a cobalt blue ground with guilding. Vibrant colors. The glaze has finely crackled crazing which commensurates with the age. I think that these were made in the 1920's produced in Japan for Western export. They are both handpainted in the same images but are slightly different due to the free hand of the artist. One of the vases has a small flaw on the top as you can see in the photo which has been incured during the manufacturing process. Clad in silken kimonos, kneeling upon tatami within the teahouse, while outside in the garden the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, all within a flower shaped reserve. Underneath the hand painted florals is a stunning combination of hues of gray and turquoise base underneath. The bottom has a minor separation just at the interior base that looks like a crack. This is not a crack but a small separation of the material. Vase is completely crack and chip free and the workmanship is very fine. Vase measures 14” in height and 8” across. Weighs approx 4 lbs. It is aprox.5 1/2" high, 6" across the handle and spout, the sugar container is 5 1/2" tall,6 1/2" across the two handles, with a beautiful scene of a river with a fisherman in a boat, at the foot of beautiful Mt. Fugi. The scenes also show huts along the river bank with foliage and trees. The lid has double flower on top for a handle, it is lite blue, with white and brown colors for the painting and highlighted with gold trim. Very pretty! Featuring a superb depiction of Amaterasu, the Shinto goddess of the sun. The name Amaterasu derived from Amateru meaning"shining in heaven. The Emperor of Japan is said to be a direct descendant of Amaterasu. Clad in an ornately brocaded red gown. She floats gracefully in the swirling clouds, while beams of light shine radiantly forth. She is shown bestowing her blessings upon Jimmu, Japan's first Emperor, who is also artfully rendered in a flowing golden kimono as his long, silky hair blows in the wind. Elegantly hand painted with vibrancy and a lively sense of interaction. Intricate imagery and attention to detail with sublime scenery and coloration ... morewhich utilizes gosu blue. Indicating an early piece of Satsuma. Very fine crackle adorns the cream colored ground and much has been left uncovered in the tasteful style of Edo Period Satsuma Yaki. Up for auction from the estate of a feisty Brooklyn lady is a 1000 Faces Japanese tea set in black and gold with multi-colors. The set consists of a teapot with lid measuring 4 1/2 inches tall and 8 1/2 inches in width from spout to handle. A sugar jar with lid measuring 3 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches wide from handle to handle, a creamer measuring 3 inches tall and 5 3/4 inches wide, eight luncheon plates measuring 7 1/2 inches wide and three teacups. You are bidding on a magnificent OLD JAPANESE SATSUMA EARTHENWARE HAND PAINTED GILDED& ENAMELED PLATE FEATURING FIGURAL SCENE OF SAMURAI WARRIORS. Not being an expert. I consulted with an auction house, and was advised that this plate is original Satsuma and is 80- 100 years old. The plate has fine cream colored crackled glaze and a hand painted scene depicting Samurai warriors or scholars. The crackled glaze is typical to Satsuma designs and is not crazing. But an integral part of the manufacturing process. The hand painted design was created with pale. Transparent enamels and the images are enhanced with embossed gilding and some enamel beading. The plate is made of heavily potted earthenware. Measures 8¼" in diameter and its edge is 1½" high when it is lying flat on a table. It could almost be a shallow bowl. Weighs ... more600 grams.
