A small figure representing a saint. This is a little under 1 inch tall and seems to be made from bronze that most likely would have been gilded. These little religious figures were made for travellers as lucky charms but were also used as decoration on religious artifacts such as chalices or ornate candle sticks or any other form of eclesiatical object. This has a flat baseso it does free-stand, i think this is a travellers charm as it is also detailed on the reverse, ornamental figures from a vessel tend to be flat backed. My guess is that this saint represents a particular figure from history and would have been obtained by a traveller of pilgrim visiting his shrine or church devoted to him. It is a detector find from the UK, it's been cleaned but not over polished up. These are hard to date as they were made for many centuries, from ... morethe simple style of face i would estimate a date of C14-15th. Rather than calling it a chair I will instead call it a gothic throne- With the beautiful stamped leather seats. take a look at the pictures and you will clearly see why. The carving and the craftsmanship of this throne is nothing short of stunning. The detail is so intricate and incredibly ornate.I believe that it is stained white oak. I've searched the throne over extensively and cannot find a maker's mark or name. I imported them myself from France/Belgium. Some of the back seats needs a little work as you can see in the 5th and 6th picture. Price is for one chair. A very high quality late Medieval gilt bronze figure of the Virgin Mary. Dating to the 15th-16th Century A.D. The Virgin standing veiled. Wearing long, thickly folded robe, her head tilted down and to the right. She holds both hands before her in prayer. The piece of unusually fine quality; delicately modeled, with stippled surface and sensitive casting. Much gilding remains. Of Central or Southern European origin. The piece likely once adorned a processional cross. The remains of the original attachment(presumably to one arm of the cross) can still be seen on the underside of the piece.
