ANTIQUE EUROPEAN ENGRAVED RENAISSANCE & MEDIEVAL GLASS - SPECTACULAR 1902 BOOK
Die Glasersammlung des Nordbohmischen Gewerbe-Museums in Reichenberg” By Gustav E. Pazaurek. Published in Leipzig by Verlag von Karl W. Hiersemann in 1902. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A spectacular. Oversized portfolio of plates illustrating fine antique glass in the collection of the North Bohemia Industrial Museum, consisting mainly of European engraved glasses from the Middle Ages through the early 19th century. Professor Gustav Edmund Pazaurek(1865–1935) was not only an art historian. Writer and editor, but also a poet and playwright. He was director of the Northern Bohemian Crafts Museum in Reichenberg(Liberec) from 1892 to 1905, and director of the State Crafts Museum in Stuttgart from 1906 to 1932. Pazaurek was also a member of the Deutscher Werkbund from 1908 to 1928. He wrote numerous essays on topics in ... moreart history and aesthetics and seminal publications on the formation of taste and on arts and crafts, especially glass and porcelain manufacture, and was editor of the journal Keramik- und Glasstudien. Before devoting himself to art history, Pazaurek wrote plays, including comedies such as Der Kampf mit dem Drachen(Fighting the Dragon” 1890) Die Venus(Venus” 1890) and Die Liebeserklärung(The Declaration of Love” a“drama with living pictures” 1891) As early as 1899. Gustav Pazaurek, writing in Kunstwart, recommended that every museum of arts and crafts should add a“torture chamber” to present negative examples for the edification of those with a“thick aesthetic skin” Such a chamber of horrors, which could be collected and continuously renewed at very modest cost, must certainly act as a drastic cure with many salutary effects. We may hope that some larger institution will soon move to put this theory of deterrence into practice. In 1909, Pazaurek himself carried out his idea in the Stuttgart crafts museum, establishing a“Cabinet of Bad Taste” The collection was on display, and new pieces were continually added, until the early 1930s. Over 24 ye

The sides and their goals changed several times during this conflict: the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was not formally at war with Russia until 1609, and various Russian factions fought among themselves, allied with the Commonwealth and other countries ... moreor fighting against them. Sweden also participated in the conflict during the course of the Ingrian War(1610–1617) sometimes allying itself with Russia, and other times fighting against it. The aims of the various factions changed frequently as well as the scale of the parties' goals, which ranged from minor border adjustment to imposing the Polish Kings or the Polish-backed impostors' claims to the Russian throne and even the creation of a new state by forming a union between the Commonwealth and Russia. The war can be divided into four stages. In the first stage. Certain Commonwealth szlachta(nobility) encouraged by some Russian boyars(Russian aristocracy)but without the official consent of the Polish king Sigismund III Vasa—attempted to exploit Russia's weakness and intervene in its civil war by supporting the impostors for the Tsardom, False Dmitriy I and later False Dmitriy II, against the crowned Tsars, Boris Godunov and Vasili Shuiski. The first wave of the Polish intervention began in 1605 and ended in 1606 with the death of False Dmitri I. The second wave started in 1607 and lasted until 1609, when Tsar Vasili made a military alliance with Sweden. In res

1494 Incunabula Medieval Latin Mammotrectus Bible Leaf with Rubricator's Red Ink
First of all. I must mention that this particular leaf of the 1494 Latin Bible has a very interesting watermark in the paper, located in the left center margin, consisting of a design that looks kind of like a open mouth with a long tongue coming out! O n auction is a leaf in Black Letter(Gothic) type from a Latin work by Johannes Marchesinus entitled"Mammotrectus. It was published in Strasbourg in 1494 by the printer. Martin Flach. This is just thirty-nine years after Gutenberg's work of 1455! By definition, an incunabulum(the singular of"incunabula" or"incunable" French) or"inkunabel" German) must be printed from 1455 to 1500. However, those books printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s, as well as the year 1500(which is technically the last year of the 15th century) had more and more woodcut printed ... moreinitials. In Latin. The term"incunabula" means"baby clothes" or"things of the cradle, and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in the development of anything. This leas has red rubrication marks all added by a scribe's own hand. The size of the quarto sheet is 5 1/2 in. x 8 in. T his is a unique incunable of the popular and academic work known as Mammotrectus super Bibliam. Which means“The Breast-Feeding Milk[The Basics] about the Bible" or"The Nourisher upon the Bible. The Mammotrectus is an early guide to understanding the text of the Bible and was very popular with preachers in the later Middle Ages. It explained difficult words in the Scriptures. Both etymologically and grammatically, and provided explanations of the festivals of the Church year, the legends of the saints, and various liturgical texts. It was especially used within the Franciscan order for semantic and liturgical instruction of the novices. The heading(on the verso side) has in Latin"Secundus Machabeorum. which means"The Book of Second Maccab ees. The heading(on the recto side) has in Latin"Fo[lium] CLI. which means"Sheet#151. This lea

Roman. Byzantine and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE to 700 CE. Ernesto Wolf Collection" By E. Marianne Stern. Published in Ostfildern-Ruit by Hatje Cantz in 2001. DISCUSSION: Far more rare than the ceramic. Stone, and metal artifacts of ancient peoples that are the staple of archaeological museums, glassware also has a long history in Western civilization. The revolutionary Roman invention of the glassblowing iron in the 1st century BC made it possible to produce large numbers of light, thin-walled glass vessels, and resulted in an outburst of artistic creativity throughout the empire. More than 225 exquisite objects, some over 2,000 years old, are presented here in color photographs and precise descriptions-some as delicate and beautifully formed as fine glassware today. Holy Terrors. Gargoyles on Medieval Buildings” By Janetta Rebold Benton. Published in New York by Abbeville Press in 1997. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The true gargoyle is a waterspout. An architectural necessity that medieval artisans transformed into functional fantasies. In clear, lively language, the introduction to Holy Terrors explains everything that is known about the history, construction, and purposes of these often rude and rowdy characters. The three chapters that follow are devoted to the gargoyles themselves, in human, animal, and grotesque form. Delving into their sometimes funny, sometimes mysterious meanings, Dr. Benton's entertaining text puts these irresistible creatures into the context of medieval life, and she provides a guide to gargoyle sites, so that readers can visit their favorites. ... moreThis is, amazingly, the first book for adults to provide a full overview of medieval gargoyles, and it is bound to increase the already numerous legions of gargoyle admirers” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x8.5” 140 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. Rare Ancient Medieval China Tang Dynasty Glazed Sculpted Bird Candle Stick 600AD
Extraordinary. Exquisite and Wonderfully Preserved Genuine Ancient Green Glazed Candle Stick with Three Birds and Floral Motif. CLASSIFICATION: Glazed Earthenware Candlestick. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Sui/Tang Dynasty, 7th Century A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 234 millimeters(9 1/3 inches) Diameter: 109 millimeters(4 1/3 inches) at center(birds) 101 millimeters(4 inches) at top lip; 86 millimeters(3 1/2 inches) at bottom base; 93 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at legs. CONDITION: Exceptionally good with no significant chips. Cracks, or breakage. Very nice, integrity intact. The“Celadon Green” glaze is mostly intact, but oxidized(not glossy) The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) Otherwise in remarkable, unrepaired condition. DETAIL: Considering ... moreits age and rarity. A splendid and remarkably intact“Celadon” glazed green candle stick which somehow has the“flavor” of a water fountain. At one time it was completely covered in a pastel green glaze which eventually came to be known as“Celadon Green” Given the elapse of time, the glaze has lost it glossiness due to oxidation and decomposition. Nonetheless even if not glossy the glaze remains mostly intact, you can see that the predominant color of the candlestick is still green, beneath which you can see the natural color of the substrate. As you can see, this was a rather exceptional specimen, embellished with three birds(seemingly pigeons) perched on the center shelf. The top shelf or dish sports a floral motif ruffled circumferential bead, the candle hole flanked by four petal or leaves. It is a very beautifully designed and executed piece, very reminiscent of a floral motif fountain. Quite a sophisticated piece considering its age. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Ch

Ultra Rare Medieval 1100 - 1400 AD Bronze Antique Skeleton Key - Museum Grade
Shipping Time Notice: Most orders shipped quickly. But please allow 3-4 days handing and 2-4 days for delivery, excluding holidays and weekends. Because of my work, I am sometimes required to be away for about week- so some orders may take up to 12 days to deliver. Please contact me in advance of bidding if a time delay is an issue. Thank you! We also buy antique keys and sell on consignment! When buying multiple items. Please do not pay individually, but allow me to forward a revised invoice so I can combine shipping. Description Museum grade. Genuine Medieval skeleton key. Keys of this age, in this condition, rarely, if ever show up in auctions. Classic design of the period dating somewhere near 1100 to 1400 AD. Over 700 years old! Similar keys, of lessor bow design are mentioned in Benet's, Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom. ... moreThus, a good reference is established for this key and dating. The bow is of especially interesting design, with"horns. Some say it looks like a"devil" bow. This is the only Medieval key I have seen with such a unique design. The majority of these ancient keys exhibit some damage. This key appears to have some minor damage to the bit, with possibly a bit tooth missing. Again, this is common and distracts little from the value or uniqueness. Similar keys, with entire missing bows and/or missing/damaged bits have sold for over $400.00. Given the relatively good condition and unique design, this key must be considered as a very rare find. The price I am asking is well within the estimated value, maybe even a little low. After all, it's over 700 years old! See picture for specifics before biding) Used condition and unless otherwise noted, may include any of the following: antique wear, patinas and or tarnishes/ rust spots or minor defects. See our other 100+ beautiful antique keys! Buy multiple items and combine the postage! Most items shipped within 24-48 hours. But please note shipping delay notes above. An antique Victorian medieval gothic Saint George and dragon stamp casket
Here is a rather unusual antique. Victorian era, stamp box, made from brass, with gothic styling, and depicting St. George and the dragon on the top. The edges of the box have ornate raised gothic patterns. And the top design is also raised from the reverse. It has faux ornate gothic hinges. There is a tab for closure. But no lock, and the interior has three small sloping compartments, originally for stamps. There is an impressed makers mark"B" on the underside of the base. The box is generally in good condition. But he back of the box shows evidence of having been dropped, as it is slightly misshapen at the bottom corners and bottom edge. However, it closes as intended and looks fine displayed. It measures 2.9 inches(7.2 cm) in length and 1.75 inches(4.4 cm) across. This would look stunning on a desk or dressing table. Ideal for ... moreanyone interested in gothic or medieval style or small pieces of unusual Victoriana. A NOTE REGARDING POSTAGE: Postage is calculated by weight and size of the packed item. Rare late Byzantine Medieval Crusader coin Christ blessing cross circle monogram
an511 Medieval copper coin measuring 17mm. Obv. Christ standing facing full-length. Blessing with two hands. Rev. cross in circle with monograms and dots. Authenticity guaranteed. Jesus of Nazareth( c. 5 BC/BCE– c. 30 AD/CE) Also referred to as Jesus Christ or simply Jesus. Is the central figure of Christianity. Most Christian denominations venerate him as God the Son incarnated and believe that he rose from the dead after being crucified. The principal sources of information regarding Jesus are the four canonical gospels. And most critical scholars find them. At least the Synoptic Gospels. Useful for reconstructing Jesus’ life and teachings. Some scholars believe apocryphal texts such as the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel according to the Hebrews are also relevant. Most critical historians agree that Jesus was a Jew who was regarded as ... morea teacher and healer. That he was baptized by John the Baptist. And was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman Prefect Judaea. Pontius Pilate. On the charge of sedition against the Roman Empire. Critical Biblical scholars and historians have offered competing descriptions of Jesus as a self-described Messiah. As the leader of an apocalyptic movement, as an itinerant sage, as a charismatic healer, and as the founder of an independent religious movement. Most contemporary scholars of the Historical Jesus consider him to have been an independent. Charismatic founder of a Jewish restoration movement, anticipating an imminent apocalypse. Other prominent scholars, however, contend that Jesus' Kingdom of God" meant radical personal and social transformation instead of a future apocalypse. Christians traditionally believe that Jesus was born of a virgin:529–32 performed miracles, 358–59 founded the Church. Rose from the dead. And ascended into heaven, 616–20 from which he will return. 1091–109 Most Christian scholars today present Jesus as the awaited Messiah promised in the Old Testament and as God. Arguing that he fulfilled many Messianic prophe

MEDIEVAL VIKING SPECTACLES HELMET VIKING SPIKES ARMOR HELMET ANCIENT HELMET
MEDIEVAL VIKING ARMOR HELMET VIKING SPECTACLES SPIKED HELMET LARP. SCA, MEDIEVAL, COLLECTIBLE, REPLICA, PROP, HELMET* Description* The Condition of This Helmet is New It is Made of Good Quality 18 Gauge Solid Steel It is Adult Size& Wearable Helmet Inner Diameter Front to Back: 8.5" Ear to Ear: 7.5" Circumference: 25.12" Top Quality Replica Helmet Our All Helmets Are Handmade& Coated with oil/grease* About Viking Helmet* Today there is only one known example of a complete Viking helmet in existence. This Viking helmet was excavated on a farm called Gjermundbu in Ringerike in central Norway. Gjermundbu is located in Haugsbygda. A village in northeast of Honefoss, in Buskerud, Norway. The helmet dates to the 10th century. This helmet was made of iron and was in the shape of a rounded or peaked cap made from four plates ... moreafter the spangenhelm pattern. This helmet has a rounded cap and has a"spectacle" guard around the eyes and nose which formed a sort of mask, in addition to a possible mail aventail. The eye guard in particular suggests a close affinity with the earlier Vendel period helmets. From runestones and other illustrations, it is known that the Vikings also wore simpler helmets, often peaked caps with a simple noseguard. Viking helmets have been excavated from only three sites: Gjermundbu. Norway, Tjele Municipality in Denmark and Lokrume parish on Gotland Island, Sweden. The one from Tjele consists of nothing more than rusted remains of a helmet similar to the Gjermundbu helmet, the same goes for the one from Gotland. It is possible that many of the Viking helmets were made from hardened leather and ironstrips, since many Icelandic stories and Scandinavian picture stones tell and show warriors with helmets. It is also possible that helmets were inherited, instead of buried with the deceased, and went from father to son, and th

1 Leaf 1480 Incunabula Latin Medieval Bible Handpainted Red Ink by Rubricator
Well. I must say that I have NEVER seen this before! Notice that in the instances of the large initial letter"I" the red ink was so thick. That in the 533 years since the rubricator put it on this leaf. It has cracked(see the 1st scanned image) Also. This particular leaf of the 1480 Latin Bible has a be autiful watermark in the hand-made paper. Consisting of a candle upon an ornate candlestick(seen in between the two columns of printed text) A very large leaf in Black Letter(Gothic) type from a Latin Vulgate Bible published in Cologne in 1480 by the printer. Nicolaus Gotz or Goetz. This is just twenty-five years after Gutenberg's 1st Bible of 1455! By definition, an incunabulum(the singular of"incunabula" or"incunable" French) or"inkunabel" German) must be printed from 1455 to 1500. However, those ... morebooks printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s, as well as the year 1500(which is technically the last year of the 15th century) had more and more woodcut printed initials. In Latin. The term"incunabula" means"baby clothes" or"things of the cradle, and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in the development of anything. This leaf has red rubrication marks all added by a scribe's own hand. And there are scores of red marks through the first letter of each verse, as well as the title listed at the top of each side of the leaf. The red color is strong and fresh-looking, on both sides of the leaf. Size of the sheet is about 8 1/4 in. x 11 1/4 in. The heading in Latin is" ZACHARIE. which means" The Book of Zachariah. This leaf has four(4) large handwritten initial letters in red ink(see the scanned images) The text contains the Book of Zachariah. Chapters 1-4. You can examine the Latin text and an English translation on the internet. There are many memorable passages in the text. We need to put into context the work of Christian scribes during the last 2.000 years. During these centuries scribes developed two kinds of abbreviations
