Japanese Shin Gunto Late War Pattern 44 Sword Original
Japanese Shin Gunto Late War Pattern 44 Sword Original I purchased this sword several years ago from the Marine that brought it back after the end of WW II. His unit was sent to Peking China to help repatriate some of the thousands of Japanese soldiers in China that were just waiting there for someone to come and tell them what to do. My friend picked up this sword and two type 99 rifles there. I am not an expert on Japanese swords but I will describe it as best I can. Starting with the signature and date. I contacted a couple of experts on these swords and was told the signature appears to read TOSHIHARU" which would be Seki Mori Toshiharu. The date of manufacture was translated to November 1944. I have pretty good picture of the tang so you can be the judge. I did find that translating the Japanese characters is as much an art as a ... morescience. I also found a small stamp on the back edge of the tang under the Tsuba which should be the arsenal ID. The tip of the tang is stamped"095" and in ink a"1096" The scabbard release spring and the Fuchi also have the"095" The grip is held to the tang with one wooden peg and one iron screw. The handle is white ray shin tightly wrapped with brown fabric. The blade is very bright and very sharp. It has it's original sharp edge from the tip all the way to the brass retainer. The back side of the blade is not flat but a slight upward bevel to the center. A couple of the pictures of the blade show some reflections but otherwise fairly represent the bright and sharp piece. The scabbard is metal lined with wood on the inside with very good olive drab paint. There are a couple spots near the top where it looks like some soldier probably painted over his name or some other identification. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a fine sword by Miyaguchi Yasuhiro who is rated by some as the preeminent Yasukuni shrine sword smith. As can be seen. The flawless blade is in polish and wears a wide undulating hiro suguha hamon. The tang of the blade is immaculate with one side being signed“ Ryujin Miyaguchi Yasuhiro” Very unusually for any Japanese sword. Let alone a gendaito, the sword is named“ Ryujin” which translates as Dragon God or Dragon King(see Nelson 4232) The other side is dated“ Showa ni-ju-nen go-gatsu kitsu-jitsu” which translates as“ A lucky day in May 1945” The blade is mounted in an immaculate 1934 pattern shingunto koshirae complete with its blue and brown tassel. The kabuto-gane bears a silver mon of a kikyo(Chinese bellflower) within a circle which. Among others, is the mon of the Matsudaira family. Item does have some oxidation and some rust but all around in great shape! Should be easy to clean up if wanted. We have not tried to clean this up in anyway. This is a fabulous variation. And a very nice example of a Type 95 Japanese Army NCO Shin-Gunto Sword that was customized by U.S. Seaman with cord weaving and knot work during World War II, also known in the Navy as"Whiteline" and"Belfast" This Sword is mounted with a cast aluminum hilt painted to resemble the Officer's pattern which still wears traces of the original paint along with dried grease and wears a black steel guard tsuba. The machine made blade measures 26 3/8 inches in length and remains in good condition with some minor surface pitting scars near the tip. VERY NICE JAPANESE HIGH RANKING ARMY OFFICER KYU GUNTO SWORD
This is a good example of a Japanese High Ranking Army Officer's Kyu Gunto Sword which is mounted with an antique hand-forged blade. The blade wears a cutting edge of 26 5/8 inches in length and overall from tip to tip measures 31 1/4 inches. The blade remains in lovely polished condition. However does have a couple of pronounced nicks to the cutting edge as well is chipped at the extreme tip however could be reshaped in the right hands. The blade also continues to wear a beautiful wavy temper line that extends to the tip on either side. The brass D-guard frames a fishskin covered hilt that remains very healthy in condition as well with the twisted wire wrap still tightly in place. WWII Japanese Army Officer's Sword Signed Noshu Seki Ju Kojima Katsumasa Saku- Listed in page 80 of John's Slough's book Seki arsenal stamp Type 98 fittings- fittings are marked 48 and all match Pierced Tsuba- has slight warp Handle is in very nice condition Aluminum scabbard that appears to have been repainted- missing ishizuke. And koiguchi is held on by a single modern day screw Sarute is the rope type. It's held together by only a few strands now Handle is tightly wrapped with menuki present and only a small crack found in the ray skin Blade shows signs of sharpening and cleaning Nakago appears to have been cleaned or wiped down Blade has a few minor nicks 1/4 of the blade towards the tip Blade has a few lines from back edge to blade. I am unsure of the cause, they are not cracks though There are no forging flaws This ... moreblade was not traditionally made. I am unsure as to whether or not it was handmade using non-traditional methods Tip has nick Blade is extremely sharp I could not get the Habaki off and did not try to force it off. Not sure if it's a modern day replacement or not Very nice thick and visible temper line Blade has some stains(I have made no attempt to clean this in anyway. I have left as I received it) Blade has scratches. Marks and blemishes Locking mechanism works fine(will need another screw to hold koiguchi tighter in place) Cutting edge measures just over 26" Blade in handle measures approximately 36" Total sword in mounts measures 37 1/2" I try to cover all good and bad with all of my auctions so you know exactly what you're getting.
