About 20 years ago this piece was purchased at an antique store and the owner restored it by having it copper plated and reupholstered with a cool looking copper colored velvet or velour fabric. Very different indeed. During the restoration. The hydraulics were removed from the chair so there would be no chance of any oil leaking from anywhere at any time. This ensured the chair would be leak-proof and would never have any oil leaking on his carpet and he wouldn’t end up in the dog house. He also had the turning mechanism stopped so his grandchildren would not get their fingers pinched in the spinning of the chair. These features ... morecan be restored by the new owner if he or she chooses at some time in the future, but for now the chair does not raise and lower nor will it spin. The back of the chair as well as the headrest are fully adjustable. The back reclining angle is controlled by a ratchet type mechanism very much like the old style lawn chairs. You lift the brace, select the angle you want to be in and put the brace back in the lock and voila, gravity and pressure does the rest. The neck/headrest can be adjusted up and down as well as forward and back by the use of two oversized wingnut type fasteners. Just adjust the angle and height of the headrest to your perfect relaxing fit and presto, instant comfy chair for a nap or to watch the game in. Ernest Koken Barber Chair Congress Model Patent Oct 30 1888 Ornate Carvings Old!
I have up for auction one of the most sought after genuine antique barber chairs. A Ornately Carved Wooden Ernest Koken Congress Model Barber Chair with a Patent date of Oct 30. 1888. This Koken barber chair was bought recently at a small town estate sale in southwest Ohio. I'm not a collector and know nothing about barber chairs. I have searched the Internet and have concluded that this chair is very RARE. Even someone who isn't a collector can tell it has a superior quality. This chair was made before the invent of hydraulic chairs. The Koken barber chair has the Koken foot pedal that allows the chair to recline. And it works well. It also has the"joystick" side lever, but I'm not sure how it works. The chair also spins with very little effort. It has a plush fancy black fabric on the seat and back, with black looking ... moreleather armrests. The seat can be removed to reveal the number 11352 in the wood. Their is also stenciled lettering on the wood, but I can't make it all out. The four legs all have a brass foot. I cleaned one to reveal the metal. You can see in the pictures the wood is ornately cut and carved with a remarkable style. You can feel the history in it. Since I'm not a collector and know nothing about restoration I haven't tried to polish the wood, or clean the fabric. I will leave that to the winning bidder. This chair is quite rare and has been very well preserved. The porcelain is in very nice condition with only a few small places where it is chipped.I would say it is 99.5% good. All parts and pieces are present. There is nothing missing. Everything functions exactly as it should. The hydraulic lift works very well and holds an adult when the chair is raised all the way up. I have never seen another Koken chair like this one. I will ship the chair at my expense(which looks like it will cost me about $600 to most places in the US) I will take great care in the packaging before it is shipped. It will be placed on a solid pallet, wrapped very thick in large bubble wrap, strapped to the pallet with two heavy nylon ratchet straps, and made completely secure from tipping. Item listed is a Beautiful RARE Antique Louis Hanson Barber Chair. The number 504 is engraved in this chair. I am not 100% sure what that means. But I did take a picture of it. This was made by the Louis Hanson Company in Chicago Illinois in the late 1890's to the early 1900's and there are not many of these that exist from the research I have done. This company and Louis Hanson has the reputation of making top of the line, quality chairs& furniture Louis Hanson was a Danish Immigrant who came to the United States and founded this company. You can Google antique barber chairs and find information on Louis Hanson. About the chair. This chair does recline but is missing the headrest and a footrest that attaches further out then the one you see pictured. These parts can be found. The porcelain is in EXCELLENT Condition in my opinion. ... moreIt does have a small chip in the porcelain where your legs would hang on the chair but it is not cracked. Easy fix. The base of the chair also has a crack in it but that is not porcelain. You can see pictures for all of the conditions. I am not sure if the leather has been previously restored. Most likely it has. It may be leather or naughayde on it. This chair needs some restoration as I previously stated with some if its issues. The hydraulics do work on this chair. The chair goes up and down and turns very easily. It is very heavy and difficult to ship so I am asking for local pickup only in the Minnesota area. It can be taken apart into 2 pieces which makes it a little easier to move and transport. I will sell to someone outside of Minnesota, but you need to figure out how to come and get it. The PAIDAR HYDRAULIC ROUND CHAIR NO. 549. was advertised in the brochure. This one advertised Spring cushion head rest. Arm rest, Towel bar, Manicure sockets and Nickel plated. These were advertised in all the barber journals and by local sales distributors with their ads. This authentic reproduction was used to price. Market, and order their supplies to the barbershops. The sign measures 7 1/2" by 9 1/4" My Dad’s Legacy I have included photos to view of my father’s barbershop in Buffalo N.Y. where this was to be sold or used. Vintage Red Koken Barber Chair Color: Red I think this chair is from the 1940's but not positive. Item is very heavy and weighs over 300 pounds I believe. So must bring enough people and proper transportation to pick up the chair. KOKEN RED. HEAVY CLASSIC BARBER CHAIR RED VINYL UPHOLSTERY IN Fair to Good CONDITION(I believe previous owners re-upholstered the seat(slight difference in red shading compared to the arms) The armrests do have cracks in the vinyl due to age(see pictures) There are some quarter sized marks. Maybe burn marks near right arm elbow area on arm and side of back of chair(see pictures) There is some rusting on metal areas due to age(see pictures) HYDRAULICS WORK once oil is added(oil has been removed because it can't be transported with the oil in it) Has Towel Bar and the original Porcelain Base LOCAL PICK UP ... moreONLY. Item is located in Cumming. Georgia Does not have a head rest but does have the attachment for adding one. Purchased at an Estate Sale where the owner said it was purchased from an old barber shop in Ohio. Ernest Koken. Then 19 and a St. Louis resident, started taking orders from local barbers for custom-decorated china shaving mugs, and the original Koken Barber Supply Co. was born. By the late 19th-century, American men wanted more than shaving mugs, much more. Barbers, too, needed tonsorial accoutrements. Koken took up a sideline, selling used chairs to barbers, a wholly modest start for what would follow. Koken took a partner, Louis Boppert, who provided working capital and manufacturing expertise. They began to make tonsorial chairs, and in 1881 the company was awarded a patent on the first Koken chair that reclined for shaving. Chairs that revolved and reclined were patented in 1885 and 1888. This bracket assembly was removed from a 20's koken round seat barber chair. I think it could be an assembly or part of an assembly for some accessory. I've seen pictures of chairs with a small table on one side. The last pic is for reference only! I think the bracket may be for something like what's shown in the ref. picture. It looks like the collar would clamp to the chair and the small arm pivots in the collar. I don't know if it's a factory koken piece or something homemade. I've been unable to find another like it so I'm not sure. The last couple inches on one end of the small arm is coated in rubber or plastic. Ask any questions. US Shipping only. Up for sale is a 50's- 60's Paidar barber shop waiting chair. It is a yellow/green color vinyl seat with chrome tubing. There are no tears in the vinyl seat and the tubing is in good shape.
