The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. OWhen the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. Description: A fine 1799 map of the northern polar regions by the English map publisher Clement Cruttwell. Covers the polar regions from roughly 60 degrees north latitude to the North Pole. Reveals a primitive yet ephemeral understanding of Arctic geography. Evidence of the exploratory work of Tschirikow and Vitus Bering is clear in the northeast parts of Asia and Siberia. However. The geography of North America across the Bering Straight is less clear with no significant inland detail and only a cursory nod to the important navigations of Cook. The northern coastline from Greenland to Alaska is extremely vague with Baffin Bay being entirely enclosed and the northwestern coastland ... moredisappearing altogether. Although not specifically named, Cruttwell marks the explorations of Herne along the Coppermine River and his sighting of the Coronation Gulf at roughly 70 degrees north latitude. Cruttwell also notes but does not specifically reference the explorations of McKenzie northward from Great Salve Lake along the McKenzie River and his own important sighting of a great body of fresh water(probably Great Bear Lake) at roughly 70 degrees. To either side of the map proper(in French on left side and in Dutch on right side) is a letter written by Monsieur Swartz, a Danish explorer in the service of the Tzar, regarding his c. 1734- 1740 explorations near Japan and Kamchatka. North America is drawn as it appeared at the height of the Colonial period. California is drawn connected to the mainland with a dotted line- indicating that European map publishers were not yet prepared to give up on the idea that California may indeed be an Island. As befits De L'Isle's scientific approach to cartographer much of the unexplored northwest of America remains blank. Antique Early 1900's Pull Down Classroom Map of North America
For sale is an incredible antique school wall map of North America that was manufactured in Chicago. Illinois by A.J. Nystrom& Co. This wonderfully aged map is printed on a canvas material and comes with the original metal bracket which still works and is very easy to mount. Due to the fragile nature of the map, it must be removed from the metal bracket to roll it up and down by hand. Don't worry though, it's super easy to do. This map would look great hanging in your library or study or would serve as a great educational work of art in your child's bedroom! Additional details: Measurements(with bracket) Approximately 56.5" Long x 42” wide Scale: 1:7.250,000 or 114 miles/inch Circa: 1920's Item Condition: Wonderful antique condition! Colors remain bold and vivid. As noted above. You will need to roll up/down the map ... moreby hand due to its fragile nature. Surface of map has light soilage from years and years of use. Canvas has some normal wear such as wrinkles, bends, frayed edges, light soilage, spotting, etc. We believe that at one point a wooden rod would have been attached to the bottom of the map. As you can see, it's no longer attached. Map has some considerable wear a few inches above the lower brown canvas strip, as seen in picture#5. Map also has some light liquid staining on the lower right hand side. Also has two brown streaks on the lower right hand corner. The text panel at right names the thirteen original states with additional notes concerning the creation of the new states of Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Boston is named as the capital of both Massachusetts and the United States. Originally by the Robert de Vaugondy family, this map was reissued by their successor, Charles Francois Delamarche. The map is ... morebased on the work of the Robert de Vaugondy family, but was re-engraved by Delamarche to incorporate the latest information gathered by the explorations noted. Condition Original outline colour on watermarked paper. With a few short printer's creases. There is a centerfold separation that enters 3.5" into image at bottom, and a tear that enters 1.5" into image at top that have both been archivally repaired. There are some small worm tracks primarily confined to blank margins and map border that have been professionally repaired, with a minor amount of border in facsimile.
