1776 Flamsteed Gemini Star Chart Map Antique Astronomy Herschel Print Engraving
Les Gemeaux. A genuine original antique Star Chart centred on the Gemini Constellation. After Flamsteed, taken from the"Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed" by Jean Fortin first published in 1776, later revised in 1795. Flamsteed(who had been Astronomer Royal) published his rather austere and large Star Atlas in 1729. It took a Frenchman to produce a rather smaller. More attractive atlas using Flamsteed's information. This is a fine example of an engraving taken from the atlas, showing not only the Twins in the centre, but parts of Orion, Taurus, The Milky Way(Voye Lactee) Canis Minor, and more. Perhaps most interesting is the constellation"Le Grd. Telescope de Herschel" a constellation now obsolete, but introduced by Maximillian Hell in memory of the great British observer in 1781. This would suggest that the engraving comes ... morefrom the 1795 revised edition. Size: Sheet 29cms x 24cms. Engraving 23.5cms x 19cms. Condition: In good condition. Loosely laid down on paper, then onto card. A good clear impression on laid paper, with central fold as issued. Flamsteed 1776" in pencil at bottom. And pictures of star cluster, nebulae and the like on the last two maps. The beautiful front and back covers, although tattered and worn, are present. Some of the charts are very lightly partially hand colored along the borders. Ownership names and information hand written inside include"Mrs. J.N. Page. Norwalk, Clyde, Ohio, and(later) Chas. Page, San Diego, Calif. I have found a Juliette(Nash) Page who, according information that I believe is from ancestry.com, was born July 2, 1820. educated in the seminary at Hamilton, New York, and in the seminary at Norwalk, Ohio. She was highly educated and wrote regularly for the magazines. Also wrote considerable poetry. ... moreShe was married in 1847 to Charles W. Page, of Norwalk, Ohio, and died in Omaha, Nebraska, April 3, 1901. And a book written by her daughter states: Many readers of this book will be particularly interested in this chapter, as the Nash and Page families in Ohio and Iowa have been intimately associated for many years past, and the author's mother's maiden name was Juliette Nash. The Nash family is an old and prominent family both in this country and England. The beginning of this book by Juliette Nash's daughter states: To the Memory of My Dear Mother, Mrs. Juliette Nash Page, Whose high ideals, pure life, true Christianity, love of home and interest in everything which related to the welfare of her family, has been an inspiration to me throughout life, This Book is Affectionately Dedicated. I believe this described Juliette Nash Page was the previous owner of this Atlas. Overall in fair condition ~ paper toned and torn with stains and soiling. Description: A rare and extraordinary 1801 Johann Elbert Bode elephant folio celestial. Constellation, or star map of Ursa Major(the Great Bear or Big Dipper) and Leo Minor. Considered the largest and most dramatic celestial maps of their era, possibly ever published, Bode's gigantic star charts detail thousands of stars, nebulae, and clusters. Constellations are dramatically represented in pictorial form, as was the convention of the previous century. May of the newly discovered nebulae, double stars, star and clusters recently discovered by European astronomers such as Lacaille, Lalande, Messier, and Herschel, are identified. Bode presents this map on a conic geocentric ... moreprojection in which most constellations are seen from the front. The current example is spectacularly colored with a light dusting of gold so that, from the right angle, the map has an almost imperceptible glitter. Bode's constellation maps are extremely rare with no other example currently on the market. Issued in Berlin in 1801 for publication in Johann Elert Bode's Uranographia.
