Evans of New York for Burritts 1856 edition of The Atlas to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens. Constellations are drawn in detail and include depictions of the zodiacal figures that the stars are said to represent. Chart is quartered by lines indicating the Solstitial and Equinoctial colures. This map. Like all of Burritt's charts, is based on the celestial cartographic work of Pardies and Doppelmayr. Dated and copyrighted: Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1856 by F.J. Huntington in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States in the Southern District of New York. Elijah Burritt and F.J. Rare Antique W.G. Evans Hand-Colored Celestial Map 1856 Constellations
This 157-year-old hand-colored map was engraved by W.G. Evans for Burritt's Atlas for the Geography of the Heavens. Published in 1856. This is plate VII, depicting the constellations of the southern hemisphere. The decorative illustrations of the constellations are wonderful and the orchid pink coloring adds a beautiful touch. Even the overall foxing only adds to the map's appeal. It measures approximately 14&1/4" x 16&1/4" The paper is soft and flexible. So this will ship rolled in a heavy-duty mailing tube. Please note that because it has been stored rolled, I had to place dominoes on the edges to hold it flat to photograph it. As shown, I moved the dominoes so that between the first and second photos of the entire map, you can see the map in its entirety.

1835 Burritt Huntington Map of Constellations Geography of the Heavens complete
Very scarce complete 1835 Atlas.Designed to illustrate the Geography of the Heavens by Elijah H. Burritt,A.M. New Edition Published by Huntington and Savage. The book contains 8 plates,7 are colored(I believe hand colored) and one plain plate. The binding has been repaired with white thread and the pages may have been put back in the book in a different order. Some of the thread has been pulled away from the pages. The book has some staining and foxing and may have some small rips or tears but the pages seem to be in pretty good condition. Map plates 4+5 have a black ink drop on the top of the page. This book had a paper cover folded onto the covers like a book cover which may have helped keep the covers in such good shape for so long. This is an original rare and nice collection of hand-colored maps that were used as a classroom teaching for Astronomy and printed in 1835. The images on the map include animals and horoscope figures. The book cover has deteriorated but each of the maps are in fairly good condition considering their age. Each of these could be nicely framed individually but I am choosing to keep it together for a greater value in having all of the maps included. These have been stored in a heavy card stock binder and will be shipped that way.
