Fresh out of an estate in Philadelphia comes an Original Late 1700's or early 1800's Colonial Hand Forged(not one part of this tray has been machined) Tole Ware Tray with Hand Painted Stencil work(with checking and Crazing one would expect from a painting of this age) You can actually see the hammer marks as well as the plier marks to the hand cut binding pieces. This charming toleware serving tray is unmarked but my guess is that it dates from around 1940. The color and decoration is rather unusual and distinctive. Painted green, it has a golden trim on the rim and hand painted white daisies in the center. A nice. Useable, not too large size, it measures approximately 12 5/8" long x 10 1/4" wide. Obviously. It's old and used but still seems to be in very good condition. There are a few worn spots- mostly at edge of center(see next to last pic close-up) and a hard to spot smudge of dirt or wear through the center daisy. Hand Painted Copper Tray, Ship Tole Ware
We acquired this charming tray at the estate sale for the artist. Anne Balbirnie. Ms. Balbirnie passed away in June of 2013 at the age of 89. She was most noted for her oil paintings and watercolors; however, she also was trained in gold leaf art work. She had a huge collection of tole stencils, which she used to create magnificent tole pieces. We acquired a few of these items and are listing them this week. The hand painted plates are a set of three(3) I do not know origins. Possibly Mexico or Russia or even from the U.S. These items are not in my area of knowledge. So my information is limited. These had belonged to a relative- all I know is they are at least vintage. If not antique. Condition commensurate with use and age. Paint wear and chipped wood on trays. Wood cracks on one plate.
