Antique Tin Document Box with Tole Paint Toleware Decoration Wire Handle
This is an Antique Tin Document Box with Tole Paint Toleware Decoration. The box has a Wire Handle on the top. The hinged lid tin box has the black oxidation to the tin base and interior which signifies an antique piece of tin ware. The tole paint toleware decoration is later to the box and possibly dates to about the 1950-60's when tole ware painting was very popular as a craft. Someone did an outstanding job painting this box with delft brush strokes and excellent grasp of how to use the tole painting brushes. The skilled painting was done by someone who knew what they were doing. Also the artist used antique tole ware designs and patterns to decorate the box. The box was not varnished either so it has that matte look to resemble the 19th century tin tole painting. The tin box also displays beautifully. It measures 8" wide. 4" ... moredeep and 5" tall. Up for sale is a primitive antique 19th Century toleware tin metal document prix recently found at auction in the Lancaster County. PA area. It is found in good used condition. It is painted black, with an alligator finish. Some of the base metal and rust run through the finish. There is a hasp on the side to secure the box when closed, and a bail handle on top. It would have held family documents and other valuables. This box measures approximately 7 3/4" x 4 3/8" x 4 1/2" It is 1 1/2" taller with the handle fully extended. A nice primitive box. Antique Black and Gold Trimmed Metal Toleware Document Box
I can recall this box in my family's posession in the 1940's. It has the name"Miss Anna B. Fairman" printed on the front. But that is not a family name that I know about. It is in the shape of a cash box at 11" wide by 7 3/4" deep by 4 3/4" high. The hinges are broken as though, lacking a key, it was opened by breaking the hinge. My recollection was that it was referred to as a"death box" as though important papers were kept in it and to be opened after death. The box is probably native to Santa Clara Valley in California, but could have been brought from Illinois in 1920 by my grandfather to California. It has been cluttering up my storage for 30 years and needs a new resting place.

This large document box is 7 1/4" tall, 9 1/2" wide box 9 3/4" wide lid, 6 1/8" box front to back and 6 1/4" front to back lid. The Peach and leaf design are in shades of green and red-orange with a leaf design in mustard on the top of the lid and sides and narrow mustard bands at the bottom of the fruit design and bottom area of the box. The black paint is very scuffed and scratched with areas of shiny silver tin showing through overall, the painted fruit is lightly crackled however it is still in fairly good condition and color. There is missing paint on one side and the back. There are no holes and the seams are tight. The hinges and latch are all there, unbroken, tight and working fine. Wonderful Peter Ompir Folk Art Painted Box. This wooden box box has Mr. Opmir's whimsical character and strawberries painted on it for which he is recognized and known for. The green on the box is the well know green that he uses in his work. Please see the pictures to see where the wood near the top of the box has a crack and where paint has chipped off. Even with the age wear of the box the art and box are still very attractive and collectable. The box measures 15 inches long-9 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches deep-The box closes smoothly and even. There is a small price sticker on the bottom of the box that I have never removed. The box was purchased in the 1960s and the sticker is most likely from then. Antique Toleware Domed Document Box
Antique domed document box with a painted country tin design typical of a Stevens Plains. Maine, piece. Circa 1830-1840. The painted design is painted with red, green, yellow, and white and is quite good despite the condition of the box. The background is a dark to black asphaltum. It measures 9” L x 4 ½” W x 5 ¼” H. As you can see from the photos, there is a lot of antique wear with some surface rust. There are also some dents in the top. The top has a loop handle with a yellow brush stroke design around the handle, yellow stripes, and a brush stroke border around the edges. The hasp on the front has the top part but is missing the loop on the bottom.

Black Toleware Tin Document Box made in Maine (19th Century)
Beautiful 19th century toleware deed box in rare oval shape. Original wire loop and front locking hasp. This black toleware deed box with early mustard and red paint decoration is all 100% original and untouched! This box was purchased at a Vermont antique store four years ago. It is a Maine piece of toleware done by the very famous"Stevens" family of Maine; well listed Toleware painters and tinsmiths in Maine-very well documented in the folk art and toleware books. This box is not from Pennsylvania, but is a Maine toleware piece-very rare and even harder to come by! The paint is still intact but has faded as the photos will show. This antique metal box has a great folk art design painted against a black backdrop. The box is in very good condition. The loop for the latch is not there but otherwise no real issues. It measures about 8 3/4 long by 5 1/4 high. There was a document I found inside the box that I am including in the sale. It is a check for a worker from the 1840's who earned 11 cents an hour at the Chesire mine company. It possibly dates this box to the early 1800's.

Wood TOLE PAINTED BOX black wooden document chest VINTAGE storage TOLEWARE
This very old box has some history. I'm just not sure what it is. It looks as though it may have originally been decorated with inlaid shell and then painted over. It has some type of thin metal lining that is peeling away. The overall height is 11.5" and 13.25" wide, 8.25" deep. Inside measures 6.5 x 11.75 and almost 9.5" deep. Charming original 19th century dome top document box.Measures 7-3/4" 4" x 4-3/4" without handle) Front side has triple border in gold(yellow) red and green. Maple-like leaves. Red fruit, yellow flurishes and dots. Working hinge, clasp and handle. 1/4" opening at one corner of the lid shows 1/2" solder line inside only; certainly very old and not noticable. Lid has large yellow motif in center; sides of base and lid have yellow borders as well. Expected age appropriate surface wear/paint loss; please see pics. Lid has 1/4" spot where mended long ago(see pics) not noticible on outside, see the dot on right side of pic. inside surfaces have rusting tones to unpainted surfaces.
