Vintage Tole Ware Hand Painted Bowl and Pitcher
This auction is for both the hand painted tole ware bowl and pitcher. The bowl is painted featuring apple and cranberry?clusters with leaves on two panels and(what appear to me to be) dogwood blossoms on the other two panels. There is a signature on the back of the bowl of"A.E. Loomis Jan.18. 1960" There is some minor paint loss of the gold paint on the edge. The bowl measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and about 3 1/2 inches high. The pitcher is painted with a floral design in multiple colors. The design does not match the bowl. Yellow and red on a black background, this piece features two classic images with some wear but shows the beauty of painted tin. The two slanted lids have a curled tab that allows it be lifted easily and the bin has plenty of storage space. The lids are labelled and work easily. We acquired this charming tray at the estate sale for the artist. Anne Balbirnie. Ms. Balbirnie passed away in June of 2013 at the age of 89. She was most noted for her oil paintings and watercolors; however, she also was trained in gold leaf art work. She had a huge collection of tole stencils, which she used to create magnificent tole pieces. We acquired a few of these items and are listing them this week. This listing is for a LOT of 5 pieces of hand painted wood items or Tole ware. There are two(2) trays. One in dark wood and one in light wood. The hand painted plates are a set of three(3) I do not know origins. Possibly Mexico or Russia or even from the U.S. These items are not in my area of knowledge. So my information is limited. These had belonged to a relative- all I know is they are at least vintage. If not antique. Condition commensurate with use and age. Paint wear and chipped wood on trays. Wood cracks on one plate. The crack, may not be an actual crack. But just the natural seam where the two or more sections were attached. Only one of the smaller plates has evidence of prior repair and is the same one with the separating seam. The other two do not show any major issues with old repairs or splitting seams. NY Liquid Proof Made In Japan Pat. 67976. The artist made a mistake on this one and left a couple of the smaller roses unfinished. I took a close up photo of it so you can see the difference between them and the finished roses.
