Rust, or deep scratches on the top. There is a little very minor wear on the gold trim and some scratches on the bottom of the tray. I will combine shipping for multiple items. It measures approximately 22" x 16" The edges have intricate cutwork as do the the handles. The colors are muted due to age but still beautiful. There is normal wear and tear with a few places missing the black background and these are mostly on the back. Look closely at the pictures as I have tried to capture the flaws. Considering its age overall this piece is in really nice condition. It is a heavy gauged metal. Part of me really doesn't want to sell this tray but I am running out of room to display all the stuff I have(and everyone is telling me I have become a hoarder) so I hope it finds a good home. for more great items! This vintage Toleware tray measures 16" by 12" with openwork edges and heart shaped handles. The sticker on the back reads: Fine Arts Studio Hand Painted Phila. 32 PA. There is tarnishing on the tray especially on two of the rims and in an area in the upper right corner of the tray. You can note these areas by looking closely at picture. It's a little over 2 1/2 inches tall and about 4 inches wide. I really love the rust color set against the black and the floral motif. There is even a little bit of yellow in the flowers. This very old tole tray is one of their favorite things and they paid a lot for it. They are a little unsure of its history and are still searching for the paper work. Apparently out of Greencastle PA(see photo of sticker on the reverse) They remember that the auction was the estate of the owner of a drugstore in Greencastle. It was reported to be early 1800's. Perhaps those that are experts in these things can tell by the rolled over edges on the handle cut-outs.The tray is HUGE! Size is about 28" by 20" The lovely handpainting is more of a European style than the simpler tole designs more often seen that involve simple brush strokes ... moreto form a design element. The tray was difficult to photograph because of glare and reflection. Of course there is general light wear and some corrosion. But it is beautiful and really in great condition for it's age. The one(1) large tray measures 18" x 12" and the two(2) smaller trays measure 12" x 8. These trays have a 1" lip around the edge which is edged with gold paint. Overall. Vintage Tin Handpainted Toleware Black Tray. Signed Fred Austin who painted trays for Nashco Product New York. This tray has an open work rim with a delicate pattern of tiny holes called lacy or lacework in gold. The trays were usually blank and the decorating was known as flowering. Individuals or companys who hired painters produced works of art known as toleware which means painting on metal. Very large trays such as this were called butlers. Tray measures 18" in diameter& 1 1/3" high. Condition is excellent for its age- some paint loss and scratches on the rear and a few rough spots on the front. Floral artwork is bright& beautiful- brush strokes paint application clearly vivid& visable. Fred Austin work has become sought after& collectible.
