Small Primitive Vintage Hand Painted Toleware Tin Box Hinged Lid Spice Box or?
Small Primitive Vintage Hand Painted Toleware Tin Box Hinged Lid Spice Box or? I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and shop with another ebayer seller from out of town recently- a real catfish moment. Because we’ve talked for years, but never met! No surprises, just all fun and did we shop until we dropped! I have lots of very cool items for you that I will be listing all week. Enjoy! This old box is somewhat of a mystery to me. It's made from a metal that a magnet stick to- and it's light and definitely has the feel and weigh of tin. But if you look closely at the inside, it has a patination that looks very much like the pattern on galvanized steel(but this doesn't have the weight of steel) Look at my inside photos and see what you think- it's a first for me. The other thing that would support whether it's galvanized ... moreis that, although the metal shows darkness form age, it does not have rust- there's rust colored spots, but I do think that is from the paint. Whatever it's made of, it's held up very very well.this one is a charmer. Measuring 3" square and 2 1/2" tall, it is the size of the spice boxes that I have seen, but there's no name etc. on it. It weighs a smidge under 1/4 lb. It has a lovely hand painted finish- the background of the body is gold, and the top and bottom are black, and they are accented with flowers on all 4 sides in shades of rust, green, burgundy and grey. The top of the lid, and the sides of the lid have thin line hand painted borders too. The hinged lid works perfectly, and the lid fits well, and stays securely in place. It really is in excellent solid and sturdy condition overall- I can't find a ding. There is wear to the finish all over in small scratches and scrapes- it's easier to see at the solid black on top. There's also some palpable small white spots on all 4 sides- see photo 4 for a good example- those aren't paint chips, those are something on TOP of the paint- it feels like paper to me- as if this was wrapped i

Antique Primitive Tin Toleware Box: Hand Painted, Black, Gold, Early 1900s
This little tin box is about recipe box size at 5-3/4" X 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" deep. It was acquired at an estate sale where all of the items being sold were from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is hand painted and I believe the tole design is actually stenciled on with gold paint with red shading. The top. As shown in the photo, is a cluster of three cherries; the front and back panels have a swag with a little red flower in the middle; and the end panels have a daisy-like flower. The black paint job is not first rate: there are a few areas where the original drips and brush strokes can be seen and it has now become crazed. This is part of what makes this piece so very charming. The stenciling is mostly intact except for an area of paint loss on the largest cherry. Overall I would consider the box to be in nice condition given ... moreits probable 100+ year age. There are a number of small dents and dings. Nothing of real significance. The lid fits on and off as it should with a small amount of effort. There are a few small areas of paint loss, primarily around the edge where the lid has rubbed; there is one small"blob" of white paint right beneath where the top of the lid ends; and there is some surface rust on the interior including one pin-hole size area where light shows through. This is an estate piece being sold as is. As found. I cannot guarantee that it has not been exposed to odors: smoking, fragrance, cooking, mustiness, mothballs, other storage odors or pets. A great piece of Pennsylvania Folk Art from the late 1800's Here are some things that can be known with a fair degree of certainty: it's origins are from the pennsylvania regions. It is from the late 1870/80's to 1910 by the style of painting. The person/s who used the box was right handed due to distinctive wear pattern. A pattern which would be consistent with the age which is approx 100+/10yrs. The base paints of black& red are original and consistent for the period. The paint is only one layer in thickness. The flowers. However, may have been redone/touched up approx 70+ yrs ago. I say this due to lack of similar wear on the flowers. The wear on the tin is consistent with the probable age, but it could be the box was used more than usual. DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert on toleware. This is a pre-owned vintage set. Really handy and usable in your bar or office area. Makes for a cute KITCHEN NIC NAC decor. The only flaw to mention is one of the coasters have a rough area as seen in photo. The Tray and all the other coasters are in surprisingly good condition for their age. The coasters have minimal paint flecs around the rims hardly worth mentioning while the tray is free of paint loss. The theme is GRAPES and kind of fits a Christmas Theme.Rich colors of GREEN& GOLD. Antique Pensylvania Dutch Hand Painted Toleware Tin Creamer
This looks like a small coffeepot. But is believed to have been used in the early 1800s as possibly a creamer. It is black with a hand painted Pennsylvania Dutch flower design on both sides. Its handle has a triangle shaped place where it was added to the top of the container. It is 5" tall and 6" wide with handle. Inside width of container is 2 7/8" The hand painted design is in good shape. There are some nicks at the base and at the top. This was found in my parents' estate so no history is known.

Unusual tole painted tin tray or bread basket measures 11" x 6 3/4" and is 2" deep at the center point. The design is done in dark green. Mustard and two shades of a russet pumpkin color. The finish is rough and aged but there is no paint loss and no dents in the tin. Tole painting became popular again in the mid 20th century and we believe this to be an example from that time period. Wonderful Antique Hand Painted Toleware Tea Caddy Tin Metal. Purchased in NY.
I purchased this antique toleware bin/tea caddy in New York State. About thirty years ago. I am not sure of its exact age, but I would feel confident in saying it is at least 19th century, judging by the painting style. It is likely to be older. The body of the piece is in excellent condition, with no visible dents or breaks. As expected with very old toleware, there are signs of use/wear that I have tried to capture in the above photos. The piece measures 7 inches in width, 7.25 inches in height(at highest point) and 7.33 inches front to back. The floral and geometric decoration is definitely hand painted, as you can feel the paint texture when you run your fingers over it. This item will ship domestically, at no charge to the buyer. Perhaps sitting the milk pail in a near by creek or stream to keep their milk cold. Bottom of pail has lots of dents. The milk pail has wonderful crazing as you can see in the photo's(sorry for the glares) Some paint loss and lots of dings and dents. If you collect early pieces of toleware you will like this piece. Measures 7 3/4" 8 1/2" including the bent handle on the lid) with the bail handle up 11 12" x 5" bottom. I tried to remove the lid(to photo) and was unable to without chipping more of the paint. Up for auction is a lovely vintage tin toleware bucket with scalloped edges recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It is in good used condition and would be great for candy.
