The Sabine Region of the Moon(Mare Tranquillitatis) The Apollo 11 Landing Area. Scale 1:15.000. First Edition March 1966. The Ranger Lunar Charts were the first maps created from the first close-up pictures ever taken of the Moon by three American spacecraft. Ranger's VII, VIII& IX. They were designed to photograph selected sites at a continually increasing scale before crash landing onto the lunar surface. Four of the six Apollo landing sites were chosen as a result of images taken by the Ranger spacecraft. Later missions further detailed these areas of interest until a specific landing site was determined and identified. There were seventeen ... moremaps in the RLC series. They were compiled and published by the United States Air Force in 1966. This map shows the Sabine region where Apollo 11 would land on July 20th 1969. The scale of this map denotes that the Ranger VIII probe was getting close to lunar impact. Produced 48 years ago. In consultation with Dr. Gerald P. Kuiper(Author of the much heralded, Consolidated Lunar Atlas) and the staff of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. University of Arizona; maps like these represent the first real attempts to identify and detail the lunar surface for initial exploration. Description: This is a beautiful example of Adam and Charles Black's 1844 comparative mountains and rivers of the world chart. Charts of this type were first introduced in England around 1823 and became a common feature in atlases throughout the 19th century. The present example is admired as one of the more attractive British examples of the style. The comparative mountains section. Occupying the lower right half of this chart, details the principle mountains of the world. Ranges are color coded to show different continents. The elevations of a number of important cities including Riobamba, London, Gibraltar, Toluca, and Quito, among others, are noted. There are also extensive notations on vegetation, ... morevolcanic activity, and lichen, much of which is no doubt influenced by Humboldt. The Himalayan peak is identified as the world's greatest mountain. Even the ballooning feat of Gay-Lussac who attained an altitude of 7000 meters in 1808 is noted. It is interesting to note that while the style is international, Black has tooled this map to appeal to his British client base. Sites of exceptionally interest to the British Islanders, including the'highest inhabited place in Scotland' and the Convent of St. Gothard, are specifically identified. The upper left portion of this chart is dominated by the world's greatest rivers. Black attempts not only to express the lengths of the various rivers, but also details their course and sources. Here the Missouri is identified as the world's greatest river at some 3610 miles, followed by the Amazon at 3130 miles. The Nile comes up a sad fifth at just 2700 miles, though admittedly its full length had yet to be explored. This map was engraved by G. Aikman for issue as plate no. AWESOME - RARE Space Age Pull Down School Wall Chart Science Vintage Moon map
It's big. It's cool, its SPACE. Here's a teaching aid produced by the Hearne Brothers from, I'm guessing from the illustration work, the late 50s to early 60s. The first two photos show the front and back of the chart. The actual printed area is roughly 66" wide by 50" tall. I've spent some time detailing the defects in photos. There's some water/mildew stains and tears on the edges of the pull bar(not that unusual for pull down charts)

1776 Flamsteed Gemini Star Chart Map Antique Astronomy Herschel Print Engraving
Les Gemeaux. A genuine original antique Star Chart centred on the Gemini Constellation. After Flamsteed, taken from the"Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed" by Jean Fortin first published in 1776, later revised in 1795. Flamsteed(who had been Astronomer Royal) published his rather austere and large Star Atlas in 1729. It took a Frenchman to produce a rather smaller. More attractive atlas using Flamsteed's information. This is a fine example of an engraving taken from the atlas, showing not only the Twins in the centre, but parts of Orion, Taurus, The Milky Way(Voye Lactee) Canis Minor, and more. Perhaps most interesting is the constellation"Le Grd. Telescope de Herschel" a constellation now obsolete, but introduced by Maximillian Hell in memory of the great British observer in 1781. This would suggest that the engraving comes ... morefrom the 1795 revised edition. Size: Sheet 29cms x 24cms. Engraving 23.5cms x 19cms. Condition: In good condition. Loosely laid down on paper, then onto card. A good clear impression on laid paper, with central fold as issued. Flamsteed 1776" in pencil at bottom.
