Beleive it was bought in an Italian flea market around the 1950's although I believe dates from during or before the 1940's Would be fantastic as a present or for a collector of vintage trays. Large Vintage 13.5" Italian Gilt Wooden Tray
This is a Large Vintage 13 1/2" Italian Florentine Gilt Wooden Tray. This beautiful tray could be great for serving. But it would also make a beautiful piece of wall decor, or for other display. Besides the beauty of this tray which shows all of the fine craftsmanship of Italian artisan. The large size of the tray makes it a very desirable piece. It does, however, have some condition issues as noted below. Please review them and the accompanying photos. The tray measures a 131/2" in diameter across the top rim. As found. The tray is not marked but I am confident this is an Italian piece and we will guarantee your satisfaction in that regard. Some of these pieces have an incised mark but others have only a sticker. I assume the latter was problem the case here and that the sticker came off or was removed. We do not know specifically ... morewhen this estate piece was made. It looks to me like it might be circa Mid Century. At the time of the original listing. We also had a number of other Italian trays and other Italian gilt items in our ebay store, as well as other decorative trays including metal toleware and art tile trays. Condition As found. There are severl edge chips through the applied gesso. Some of these are shown in a closeup photos. There are also two small, narrow crack marks, as seen marked with arrows showing the extent. It appears to me that these are just superficial cracks in the applied gesso, as commonly occurs on these pieces, that do not affect the wood, but I cannot tell to a certainty. Touching these up with some gilt RubNBuf or similar product would make this less noticeable. The tray is offered as found/ as seen/ as described. What a unique serving tray! Not only does it sit there looking beautiful. It plays music as well. Up for auction is a vintage two handled wood inlay tray from Sorrento Italy. Very intricate and detailed inlay in a traditional pattern of phoenix birds and other floral and bird like forms. Some call the'phoenix' dragon forms but I beg to differ. Such intricate handiwork that you need a magnifying glass to see the tiniest pieces of wood used. Especially in the frame around the central design. In very good condition. Two small scratches on the surface only. Barely noticeable. All wood elements intact and wood does not appear to have dried out as often happens with pieces of this vintage and detail. Surface and paint wear as to be expected for items of this age and use) circa 1940s- 1950s. The tray painted in a really nice gold gilt with dark salmon or light orange hued paint decoration. The tray appears to be made of wood covered with gesso as florentine ware is normally found. The coasters which are done in gold and pinks(or smaller trays) appear to be made of compositiion or possibly plastic that looks like composition- as some of the later florentine ware has been made. The larger one measures approx 7.75" in Diameter and the coasters or small trays measure approx 4.25" diameter.
