You are bidding on a vintage wood carved bread/serving tray. This tray was made by Cape Craftsmen. Inc. in North Carolina. I have seen a lot of these trays over time, but I have never seen one in the original box. I also have never seen one in such amazing condition as this one- not so much as a scratch on it. The wood tones are beautiful. It portrays a farmer with his scythe working in the wheat fields- barn in the background. Very deep carving of the words"Bread" at the top of the bread board. x x x x's were marked below the letters r-e a-d to mark the spots for the wood-carver of these smaller letters. EXCELLENT patina and carving! This board does not have any water or food stains as many old boards have. No graying or darkening of the wood from water damage. Heavily rubbed on the back where the board was pushed across a wooden table as the dough was kneaded. The center portion of the back is where the dough would be worked before it had risen. Typically. A dough block would be cut in half or fourths after rising. This is the reason for the knife marks on the back. ... moreThe front was used as the place to set the dough to rise. The dough would then be covered with a damp cloth. The several V cuts at the bottom of the bread board is so the woman could always line up the board with her thumbs/tummy as she kneaded the dough. This way the bread board would always remain on center. The front and back of the board has several drying cracks. Yet this attributes to the age of the object instead of negating its value. ITEM DETAILS I looked for regarding the integrity of this wooden board: Found this bread/dough board at an estate in a large collection of antique bread boards. I know it was part of a collection. The board has a nice color. The swirled grain. Darken from age(wild grain) is lovely on the top. The smell of this wood is like opening the drawer of your Grandma's old wooden dresser. With a 10X Loupe I see the end grain on the side of the board. The wood is hard. I used the finger-nail test. This antique board has been left untouched since I purchased it. The front has more knife marks than the back. The Large V cut at the top of the board is so the woman could always line up the board to her tummy as she was working. This way the bread/cake board would never be off center. Vintage/Primitive Hand Carved Small Round Bread Board ~ Treenware
Up for consideration from my personal collection; paring down and thinning out. This 9.5" out of round bread board is a good example of primitive woodenware; otherwise called treenware. Very light with"Bread" hand carved on edge. There seems to be an early repair. Hard to spot but I have pointed it out in the pictures. Does not affect the overall integrity of the board. Wood appears to be pine. As always. I strive to describe to the best of my ability item listed. I am no expert but do love the look and history of primitive pieces. From the Black Forest region of Germany next to the Swiss border. This is a beautiful antique wood carving. A one piece tray or dish. 12.5 inches long by 10 inches wide. About 3/4 inch deep. Wonderful example of craftsmanship in wood working. Spectacular detail in the carving. Has a patina. Some worn areas and three cracks in the wood that I see under close inspection. As well as some tiny drops of what looks to be white paint under magnification. One would really need to carefully inspect before seeing the flaws. Still intact as a single piece of wood.
