The carver who created this work was very well skilled in his or her craft. This piece was probably carved in Switzerland or the Black Forrest Region of Germany.I will lean on the more knowledgable viewers to maybe help with this. The artist might even be well known although this piece is unsigned. The carving depicts a gnome or dwarf supporting a candle holder. It must be heavy for he is straining to keep it up. Notice the strain in his stocky arms and legs. Face is very well done with knitted brows and intense look. Very fine detail ... moreall around on this piece. Notice the texture to his boots and hem on the tunic. The swirls to the powder horn. Even the ground was given time and attention with rocks strewn about. Estate found.wonderful pair of early Black Forest carved bookends featuring an old man and woman. I love the expressions on their faces which are finely detailed. In very good condition with a lovely patina. There is a small toothpick sized hole at the corner of the mans mouth as if something may have been held there at one time? This is very hard to see as both sides of the mouth match perfectly and the small round hole blends in with the carved wrinkles around the mouth. Each measures approx. 8 1/4" tall x 4" x 4.5" A very charming example of old European folk art.

Very nice details, the piece is 18" by 11" aged patina and some wear to the outer wood, tiny nail holes, may have been mounted to something, I purchased this years ago at an estate sale, the man having the sale was in his eighties, he said it had belonged to his father, his mom threw it out and his dad found it and hid it away for many years. Up for bids is this Antique American Folk Art Carved& Painted Birds In Nest Wood Carving. This piece was most likely carved in Pennsylvania in the mid 20thC but could be a little earlier. The carving depicts three baby birds and their mother that are sitting on the edge of their nest. The baby birds eyes look to be nails and the mother bird's eyes look like tacks. They are attached to the nest with thick wire legs. The birds are wood and nest are wood but the nest has composition covering it to give it a more realistic look. All of the paint on this piece is original. There are no breaks or repairs to this piece but I do believe that 2 baby birds were either never added or they are missing. In great condition, no repairs, just a couple of nicks along the front edge of the canopy and a small chip on top of one of the branches on the back. Nice patina. I discount for combined shipping. We acquired it in Montreal quite a ... morefew years ago; it is signed on the base with a purple ink stamp that shows medallion with ribbon and a banner with the artists name but it is a bit smudged, the first name may be Darran or something of that sort, the last three letters appear to be RAN and the last name looks like Kall but again that may also be Wall or Hall as the first letter is uncertain. We have tried many hours to find who this might be but with no luck, if anyone has more information we would love to hear from them. Age: we would date this piece to the late 1800’s– early 1900’s. It does appear to have good age and patina, the wood appears to be raw and never stained or varnished Size: measures 16 inches from heat to tail and over 10 inches high at the cat’s hind legs Condition: In overall wonderful condition with no major damage that we can note. There are some cracks to the wood from drying with age, there are some cracks around the legs, they go through on the back legs but don’t appear to on the front legs; one ear has some fretting and also the end of the tail; there is a piece of wood missing from the toe on one of the back feet; lovely patina and feel to the wood. This piece appears quite old and probably dates to at least the early 19th century if not earlier. It is about 8-1/2" long and about 6-1/2" tall to the horn. The bull is painted bright red with black dots and has a primitive face. It has attached ears that I think are painted rawhide and black horns. One of the horns is missing its tip and the other appears to have been repaired. There is some white paint on one shoulder and I cannot tell if it is original and intended or not. The bull has letters painted on the rump. A clearly defined M on one side and TN on the other side. It's a wonderful primitive wood carving for your collection. A beautiful old hand carved Hound dog, with classic black and tan features handpainted, no doubt someone's favorite old dog of childhood, perhaps. The estate sale personal mark everything for cataloging with a black grease marker. The black mark on the bottom is from them. And it would not come off. I did clean the wood with orange oil. Here is a really old nutcracker. I think he is a Fisherman(i got another fisherman figure from the same lady. He is 9 inches tall and hand carved. He has a nice hat. Mustache and beard, coat with lapel and buttons. Nice touches. There is a metal pin at the joint. He is very cool. The only real damage i see is the chip at the bottom back handle.

Antique American Folk Art Carved Whittled Wood Unusual Man Figure Doll in Chair
Up for your consideration is this extremely unique and captivating carved and whittled wooden figure of a man(or woman? in a rocking chair. The figure itself its made of carved sections of wood each joined by a small nail and some type of now yellowed glue. The wood itself does show signs of age and oxidation. The torso and head are one singular piece of carved wood. With carved detail of a lapel, suit and buttons under the hand knitted wool sweater that fits snugly on top. We did not attempt to remove this sweater to show this detail in fear of potentially damaging the piece. However, some pictures do show signs of this. This auction is for a rare R.J. Stum hand carved folk art horse. This horse was purchased from a New England auction house several years ago and cam from the collection of actress Penny Marshall. An avid folk art collector. This wonderful horse has a great stylized head, face and body. He has a very grumpy look to him and is extremely well proportioned and carved. This carving measures 6 1/2" tall x 6 1/4" wide and is in very good condition. It does have some crazing to the paint and some light paint loss to the end of the tail.
