Unusual Antique Santos de St. Michael the Angel Polychromed Sculpture
This is an unusual Antique Santos of St. Micahel the Archangel carved from wood. With polychromed paint. Probably South American in origin. Coloration is mainly blues and reds, and the wings are made from tin. It sits on a base, also of wood, and detaches from this base. Up for auction is a hand carved antique Jesus crucifix religious Santos woodenware statue recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia. PA area. It is found in good used condition considering the age. It is difficult for me to place this in the proper time and era, but it certainly an antique. This is offered in untouched condition, with its natural finish which includes remnants of original paint. It is missing the right arm and its original cross. And her base is 5" by 3-1/2" It looks to me that Mary is carved out of one piece of wood(except for applied hands) and then attached to a layered wooden plinth, alsoe carved out of a single piece of wood. Mary's hands are most interesting, as one features all five fingers and the other is a smaller hand in a"mitten" shape. Don't know the significance of this.it seems to be the same wood and same paint. Wonderful antique colonial old wood carved Santos figure has glass eyes. A charming expression, and great patina to the polychrome paint. Appraised by Leslie Hindman auction service, they called this figure"Continental" or probably mid to late 1700's. Measures 15" tall. The base is not original but probably replaced sometime back for stability reasons. I think rare is often over-used on ebay. But it is indeed rare for a figure like this to have survived a non-museum environment intact! Hand carved from wood, glass eyes, articulated knees, thighs, elbows and sholders, this is an amazing piece of old-time craftsmanship. I feel comfortable dating this no later than the early 1800's, possibly 1700's. Very nice expression, has alot of wear to polychrome paint(see photos) Does have some worm holes, but is not chipped or cracked. Eyes are glass. Feet are clad with old leather glued on bottom(probably had sandal straps on top at some point) He measures 20" tall. Clothing is tattered. Probably is not original- looks more Victorian era. Antique wooden religious mission statue. Hands have been lost over time which is usual for most old Santos statues. The wings which were made of wood have been lost as well but does not take away from the overall beauty of the piece and is typical for statues of this age. The wings signifies of him being an angel. An Angel of the Last judgement. Base is missing section but stands firmly. Most of the original paint remains though is experiencing age loss. Other than previously described this Santos is in remarkable condition. Stands 12 ¾ in. tall.

This is a colonial wood carved Madonna. The country of origin is supposed to be Peru. But I have only the verbal confirmation of the owner. He has a great Santos collection and we will be selling different pieces of his collection in the next weeks. This particular item is in great shape for its age and has only minor defects. DESCRIPTION: Pair of antique(ca. about 1900- 1925. Possibly older) Mary and Joseph Santos figures with glass eyes. VERY large pieces at about 21" tall each. The robes are some type of papier mache(or similar material) and the heads, hands, feet, bodies underneath the robes, and bases are wood and please see pics. Latin American, probably Mexico or Central America. Please note these figures have been*re-painted* and please see Condition Report below. The Santos figures themselves are very early 20th century or older, but the paint is*not* original and probably only about 40- 60 years old. beautiful and rare antique late 17th to 18th century hand carved Santo statue of the virgin Mary. May have been carved in Spain, Portugal or Italy, this incredible statue is on a faux painted rococo plinth base, the statue is missing hands, and the edge of top of base( remember this carving is over 300 years old) repainted and some flaking, but over in great shape for age, the Santos measures 14 inches tall, this is a beautiful work of Spanish mission art, hope it goes to a good home or collection, item sold as is,thanks and good luck!

In German; please scroll through to end of listing to read"a clue to the angel's history. Beautifully carved. The carving is tactile. With pleasing symmetry. Movement and vibrancy- the inner feathers look very ruffly and tousled. While the outer form is very controlled and balanced. It is a poetic design. One could say the angel radiates peace and harmony as the outer design is very neat. Symmetrical and circular. Yet at the angel's heart, or center, there is a vibrancy and energy. Perhaps symbolizing her soul. Gilded with real gold applied over gesso and bole. Carved from a light-weight finely grained hardwood. Likely linden or lime. This is a frieze. ... moreWith flat back; it likely once adorned an altar or other religious structure. As you can see in the photos this angel really shines when brightly lit; the gilding is ever so lovely. It is real gold. There was no synthetic gold in the 1800s. Gesso(plaster) and bole(red pigment clay) were applied over the carved wood to provide a smooth surface for the gold; the bole lends the gold a rich red undertone. Condition- Some age crackling and loss to gilding. As to be expected with a piece over 200 years old. Looks wonderful from the front. The back shows some repair. This is a delicate old piece. The wood is very dry and fragile. This was likely removed from its mount at some point. As I see old adhesive residue on the back. Back shows some glue reinforcement/ repair to damage in two spots. A tassel and the middle swag piece are reattached. Another repair to wing tip is likely original to the time of the carving's creation. The hole and rivet to hang this may have been added later. The only repair that is noticed from the front. And then only under close examination. Is to the left bottom tassle. On the back. A clue to the angel's history: part of a very ol

Charming"Santos" carved wooden polychrome figure measures 12"h x 5"w x 4" deep and weighs a bit over one pound. Obviously crafted with great care. This carved"saint" with his beatific gaze is an example of fine workmanship as evidenced by the detail in the carved folds of his cloak, the fine features of his bearded face and the toes of his exposed foot! The brick red robe with gold touches and the blue of his garment have aged to a lovely patina. He is presented"as found" missing one arm(see close-up photo) Despite this wound, or perhaps because of it, he retains an air of dignity and grace.

This wood carved figure appears to be that of a shepherd with missing arms and toes depicted of most carvings of this era. The facial features are defined.
